I really didn't think it was a horrible call. here are the possible outcomes...
A. Get stopped, give LSU the ball at the 35.
B. Pick up a first down, Weis saw that our offense was looking ok against LSU, and wanted to keep the momentum, if Freeman makes an easy catch, we have that first down.
C. Pick up 20-30 yards like Thomas did earlier this year. First and 10 at the 50.
It was clear that Weis was trying to play a similar game to the USC game. He knew we couldn't stop LSU's offense very well. He wanted ball-control. If we drive downt he field and score a TD, it is a gutsy and great call, it just didn't work. If we punt it, and they get the ball around their 30 yard line, there is a good chance they would have driven down the field and scored anyway, as they did at will against us, more-or-less.
In a game where you have no defense, you have to try and take advantage of absolutely every offensive series. Once we get a defense, he won't be making those calls.
Remember, the next play they got 30+ yards. It's not like the defense did a great job of stopping them. LSU went 35 yards in 2 plays.
And it also isn't like LSU scored that many points on us because they always had a short field. Remember, they put 577 yards of offense against us, most of anyone they played this season. That includes absolute pansies. The only way we were going to win was to score on every possesion and get a few lucky breaks.
