Good, yet incredibly disappointing season

When you are finally able to pull yourself out of the cloud of doom that resulted from the Sugar Bowl, overall, you gotta be somewhat pleased with how things are going. You have to go back to the 1992-1993 seasons to find 2 consecutive 9+ win seasons for ND football. And the list of ND coaches that have won 76% of their games in their first 2 seasons is pretty impressive (Parseghian, Leahy, etc). Add to that the fact that recruiting is going well, so the future looks bright. How can you not be pleased with that Weis has accomplished thus far?

The one thing that taints everything he has done is the blowout losses. Especially when they come at the hands of your arch rivals. The blowout losses leave a stain on an otherwise very good season. Had we gome 10-3 and been competitve in every game, I would consider this season a tremendous success (even with a bowl loss). As it played out, I am happy with the direction that the program is going, but disappointed in the results of this season.

Does that make sense?

Nice post Solo. Blowout losses hurt more then anything else. We need that talent gap to close quickly. I understand it will take a few years, but oh when it does...Hopefully tomorrow is a good day, if not I'll be hitting the Fat Tire's early and often tomorrow. ;)

yes solo it makes sense, recruiting is going well, but remember it is crucial that everyone weis gets over the next 2 years will have to perform.

I never wanted notre dame to play lsu.I said a month ago that it either would be a close game or a complete blowout.i was just trying to justify the close part to myself.

I'm pissed about michigan and usc and will be.Notre Dame got pasted all over the field and no matter how I try to justify it by saying everyone plays notre dame tough,I still can't help but to look back at some of the other games that michigan.usc, lsu played this year and wonder why notre dame could have sucked so bad in those 3 games.I guess when it comes down to it...they really didn't perform that well in several other games as well.
I have a degree in psychology and can justify it several ways in the mental aspect of the game too,the media, the heisman, the boxing and baseball careers, the cover of sports illustrated, these guys just weren't ready for the big time as a team.I think they just expected to have everything handed to them on a silver platter and it just didn't happen.

your right 20 years from now it will just be another 10-3 season on paper and will look like a success, but right now i just see blow out losses and wins over mediocre teams.I just think it's probably a good thing we didn't play pitt,BYU,or tennessee this year or it could have gotten real bad.I'm not saying we would have lost those games, but it was easier playing north carolina, army, and air force.
