The media didn't purposely set ND up to fail. The media is: a. lazy and b. didn't see some things coming.
A: The media knows and loves QB's and WR's. They saw a big name QB and WR and ranked this team based on that and a high number of returning starters. Remember the old baseball commerical "chicks dig the long ball?" So does the media when it comes to football. They love their glamor boys. They didn't consider the fact that even last year this wasn't a dominating offensive line or that the defense was greatly undermanned.
B: The preseason rankings this past preseason were a crap shoot moreso than most years. In regards to ND's schedule, they didn't see the improvement coming from Michigan and they didn't see JD Booty and company stepping in the way they did at USC. USC had better lines and defenders returning, but they gave ND the nod there due to a QB and WR.
No, I don't think we were deliberately set up to fail. But that doesn't mean they aren't enjoying the fact that they were wrong.
