Here is FoxSportsnet's take on potential heisman trophy contenders for 2007.

24. Jimmy Clausen, QB Notre Dame
Pencil in here whoever the Irish starting quarterback will be. It might not be Clausen, a true freshman, right off the bat, but he'll be the front-runner for the 2009 Heisman.

this coming from the man who predicts colt brennan to be the 2007 heisman frontrunner? this will never happen, as ESPN will never plug a mid major school.

bah, no Michigan offensive skilled player is good enough next year to win the Heisman. They are still vastly overrated imo.

I think he may be talking about the defensive talent leaving so that they dont hurt JC's stats and rep. ala Brady Quinn...i could be wrong, but thats what i think he is talking about.

Charles Woodson and Desmond Howard won it and the are from a mid major... :)

Andre Ware and Ty Detmer really were from mid majors. If Hawaii goes undefeated he has a shot. But I agree he shouldn't be the #1 seed, Slaton would be my pre-season choice for the exact reasons listed in the article.

First off, those guys are dumbass. No way in hell will a QB at Hawaii win the heisman. And I think they are just trying to stand out by not having Darren McFadden #1......or even #2, much less #4.

But I like to see Jimmy on that list, that's all.

lol @ UM joke. Andre Ware was 1989 and Detmer was 1990. That was 16 years ago.... before the ESPN hype machine truly manipulated voters. Now we are forced to be spoonfed babies about the complete indisputable dominace of certain players that aren't exactly .... that good.

Fate has been rather cruel to Adrian Peterson. Mr. McFadden should take note.

They should now vote for this stupid thing AFTER the bowl games. I'm convinced.

Yeah you are probably right.

I'm changing my preseason favorite to McFadden, I don't know how I missed him followed by:

2. Slaton
3. McCoy
4. White
5. Hill.

JC isn't even a lock to start, so I'm suprised they have him in the top 25. Maybe that network, can't even mention by name anymore, is trying to put all this preassure on him beforehand, so they can spend the next 4 years tearing him down.

The fact that anyone's Heisman trophy "campaign" is underway is a joke.
There's no way to say now, when we are still in this season, what next season holds. People who say that X or Y is in the Heisman driver's seat for next year make me sick.
It wouldn't surprise me if people used the bowl performances to mold their rankings for next year. The Heisman shouldn't be a two year award, but I guess that's what it's molded into.

I think Colt McCoy has a great shot to make some Heisman noise next year.

I agree.

Does anyone here think that Reggie Bush would have won it after the Rose Bowl VY had?

Bush was great, no arguments there. But VY was the best player in college football last year.

It's ok man. The link is for foxsports not espn. Whoever is leading the Irish next year will put up big numbers. I don't think Charlie is gonna stop throwing it because he has an inexperienced QB. He'll just scale back the playbook. Tell the QB make a couple reads and get rid of it.

Important note for all "JC for Heisman stories". His name is spelled "Clausen", but it's pronounced "Pawlus" until he actually does something Heisman-worthy during a real game.

Agree with maison. Pawlus was supposed to win "multiple" Heisman Trophies. Hope the kid just settles in and plays good enough to win.

agreed, if he went to a school back in that day, say BYU, he would have done really well. ND wasn't the greatest fit for a kid with his talent.

NO DOUBT!! I've always thought that too. Had Charlie had Ronny-boy back in the day, he would've set the school records bar a lot higher for Brady Quinn, but my time machine is broken and I can't woo Charlie into ND's good graces over ten years past now.

Genetics does not always make a QB.

Genetics does not always make a QB.

First there was Archie, Peyton and Eli. (Brother Cooper was a WR.)
Household names - nothing further need be said.

Then there was Shreveport's Josh Booty, who played inconsistantly at LSU, and was replaced by Rohan Davey (presently Tom Brady's backup in New England). Middle brother Abram was a decent WR. Now little brother John David is burning 'em up as Matt Leinart's replacement at USC.

Casey Clausen played OK at Tenn., but Rick Clausen remained 3d string at LSU (behind Russell and Flynn), until he got his break by transferring to Tennessee. Then he did . . OK, not exactly another Peyton. Jury is still way out on the youngest Clausen boy.

One thing that I think we've all been overlooking is the question of his leadership ability (not that I'm necessarily doubtful.) No matter how much talent JC brings to the position, the manner in which he will probably affect the W/L column more than anything else will be his ability to lead the team on the field during a "rebuilding effort." This is all assuming, of course, that JC is the QB that the Robot-Genius goes with next year, which I am somewhat doubtful of.
