Does UCLA have more talent on defense?

As opposed to who, they are sure doing a good job of shutting down SC unlike we did last week.

UCLA brings in DeWayne Walker from the Redskins and BAM, they are a top 10 defense.

they must have the TRUE talent because those guys have a superior pass rush to most teams... I don't care what those kids were rated...they rush the passer like animals uncaged. They had a better front 4 than USC...even compared to when we played USC.

and I got chastized for being negative last week...speed kills and ucla bitch slapped usc all game...we need speed and we need a real dc now!!!!!

A DC will not get our Front 4 to be faster. They work on sprinting drills all the time... Our guys are just not fast enough on the pass rush. They are lumbering...despite the fact that they work on speed all the time.

We need faster guys. And Weis will get them.

out of high school - advantage ND.
now - advantage UCLA.

UCLA's depth and talent on defensive front four are both head and shoulders above our's - not even close (I doubt Frome would be 2nd team for them)

Exactly. They're more talented than our guys now, but weren't out of high school. WHY is that? What is the difference?

i think it boils down to simplicity. if you tell your line, do nothing but get at the passer, that's pretty clear. it's much easier to execute when you limit responsibility. michigan did the same thing this year, they simplified their defense. took responsibilities away from players, and their production went through the roof.

i don't know if NDs defense is overly complex or not. but they sure do seem to miss responsibilities. especially with new faces next year on d, i'd expect the scheme to be simpler. hopefully we'll see improvement too.

When you have recruits commenting that NDs defense is so overly complicated that it doesnt work, you know there is a problem.

Hard to tell, really Clotho it is, I'm sure you think it is coaching and that could be. But it could also be that Hickman and Co. was underated coming out of high school, or they were late bloomers or they worked their ass off in the weight room and field. There are to many cases when the latter was the case to just say coaching.

idk, they fared pretty damn well against our offense and against USC's..... so, I'd say the answer is "yes".

They did too well in their games compared to our defense for it to all be credited to their coaching.

UCLA has some kickass DEs' ! When your bringing that much speed from both sides all game, it's gonna be tough for QBs'. Couple that with a non-complicated scheme and good discipline,,,, and wa-lah !

hopefully we continue to improve in getting better defensive recruits and either minter does a better job at DC or we get someone who can develop players and have a scheme to where our players arent out of position

I don't think you understand. Coaching isn't just gameday scheming, it's intensive and goes on all through each player's career. It goes on in practice. It goes on in film study. It goes on on the sidelines. It's all the time. These players have had better coaching than our players have had on defense. Add to that a better defensive scheme, and voila- they're head and shoulders above us.

Definitely coaching is key to their strong D. Speed and natural abilities are part of it too, but coaching is the intangible. Look how much better Brady got with CW.

I want a coach like Ken Norton (not him, just someone with his style) at SC.......you see how he gets his guys fired up on the sidelines?? I never see ND's linebacker coach on the sideline getting the boys ready like that!

It couldn't be totally coaching, UCLA gave up 66 to SC last year with pretty much the same coaches.....

its coaching its coaching its fricken coaching...kids only become monsters by bad parenting...players only become average by bad coaching....

I didn't say it was all coaching.......

Also, it was the same D and coaches (as you say) - but SC had the heisman duo, so this years offense wasn't the same offense that put on 66 last year.
