But I love the way GT plays defense. Tenuta is one hell of a up and comer.

I would love to have him or the newly outed Miami DC.

I've decided that I will support Weis no matter who he decides.

But it doesnt hurt to look over the fence and see what your neighbor has.

I think that Minter's a pretty decent defensive coach. Probably in the top half of DCs in college football. It's hard to call him out for the pass defense getting lit up against USC and Michigan...

On the other hand, Tenuta's probably one of the top 10, probably the second best we've seen all year behind English. By no means am I saying fire minter, but Tenuta's a darn good DC.

i read an article where the defense has improved from 75th last year to 45th this year overall, i think that's pretty good with having a running back convert to linebacker over the summer

It will be interesting to see how many Irish defensive players get drafted in the next couple of years and how high. That will be one indication of the talent Minter has had to deal with.

Anyone well versed inhis pre-ND track record?

It was only 2 years. The D really took off in the second year. But that was also over 10 years ago.

There was a time when Minter was considered one of the best D-coordinators going. But nowadays, I think his style is a little outdated. Overly conservative defenses that rely on the secondary to make plays, and the d-line to produce a pass rush all on its own w/ little blitzing just don't work anymore, imo. At least, they don't work as well as they used to. Kinda like the Cover 2 in the pros. It works pretty well when you have great players on defense (i.e. the Bucs of a few years ago), but when you have mediocre or bad players on defense, it gets shredded.

So I think it'll get better as the talent improves, but I dunno if ND will ever have one of those monster defenses like OSU under Minter.

while i dont mind seeing minter get another year if ND is able to pull Tenuta from GT I think ND should do it. I really like the way GT plays D and if ND could get Tenuta i think he would improve the D

Eh, I think Tenuta's on the verge of a Head Coaching job anyway though. The most they'd have him for is a season anyway, imo.

But being a DC at GT gets you a HC job at a place like Florida Int or Temple.

Become a DC at one of the countries prestigious programs and the skies the limit.

I don't know about that. Everyone knows who he is and what he has done with that defense and he could get a mid-level Head Coaching job. I agree that if he wants a big time job coming to ND would help with that.

Someone mentioned Miami's ex DC. Who is that because that seems like it would be a good fit. Keep the FL. pipeline going and those Miami defenses just always seem to be nasty.

AS I have said before look at the highlight reels from when he was with holtz...we had as was often put a bend but don't break defense...except for light and smagalla we sucked in the d backfield...bend don't break means losses to often to big time schools...yes we had some big wins but far to many losses

I dont like "bend not break"

I like "we will punch you in the mouth, punch you again if you get back up and you will not take one inch of our turf" attitude.

Bend but don't break is how the Patriots won three Superbowls without the greatest talent on defense.

I wouldn't characterize the defense in ND's last four losses as bend but don't break. The long plays were killers.
