Shame on ESPN

For spreading this nonsense on how the Irish are going to rematch Michigan in the Rose. The college football fans are up in arms about a subject that is much ado about nothing.

Dear ESPN. With their first at-large pick, the Rose will pass on ND.

What happens when Rutgers beats WVU? All these "experts" will look like even bigger idiots. And Rutgers will beat WVU.

I am a Notre Dame fan and have been so for 35 years but I can see, and understand, the arguement for saying Notre Dame should not be BCS eligible. We got beaten soundly by the last three BCS eligible teams we played. Plain and simple, we have not proved that we belong there...yet.

However, I am encouraged by the signs. We are recruiting well and we are not loosing to teams we should beat. I believe that after a rough but encouraging upcoming 2007 campaign, we will be challenging for the National Championship.

Yes but when comparing two loss teams for that spot, can the others claim their two losses were to #2 and #3?

And before anybody gets worked up over ESPN's predictions:

The BCS is not designed for the 8 best teams in America to play. It's designed for #1 to play #2 and then for the bowls to make as much money as they can. **Homer Alert**Based on those criteria, ND is ALWAYS a good choice!

I don't even watch sportscenter anymore. I can't stomach ESPN anymore, unless the Colts or the Hoosiers are on, and even then I listen to the radio broadcast.

I don't understand how an Irish fan can honestly say this team is deserving of a BCS bid. We got waxed by the only two top 20 teams we faced. We survived against a 21-25 type school. That's our big win. We're not particularly good.

We've given reasons why...the big one...money. The BCS bowls are not a playoff.

My other point was legitimate. Of the two loss teams, our two losses were by far to the best teams.

I'm not saying the Irish are a great team. But in reality this year, after the first three, there really is a big wash of teams that are inconsistent and not overly pretty in all aspects of the game. Yes, that includes the high and mighty SEC teams that oh-my-god-are-so-good-they-would-kill-an-NFL-all-pro-team.

The Rose commitee is not a big fan of ND. It is filled with USC alum and Big ten homers. We will probably not see a Rose invitation for along time unless it is for a NCG.

The Fiesta Bowl commitee is just filled with ND homers. We would get picked every year if they could.

Not sure of the make-up of the Sugar, but seeing as though the chair stated that they would take a 2 loss ND over any other 1 loss team, I am inclined to think that they are at least neutral.

Bowl Selection Criteria
Guaranteed Slots
Automatic entry for the four BCS bowl games are:

The conference champions of the following conferences: Big Ten, Big XII, SEC, Big East, Pac-10, and ACC
Notre Dame, if they win 9 non-exempt games or finish in the top 10 in the final BCS ratings. (Midway through the 2002 season the NCAA reversed its decision and allowed Notre Dame to count its preseason bowl game as non-exempt. Another clear example of favortism.)
At-large teams that finish in the top 4 in the final BCS ratings.
At-Large Eligibility
Any other Division I-A independent or conference champion which finishes higher than sixth in the final BCS standings.
Any other Division I-A team that has won nine or more games against other Division I-A opponents and the team must finish higher than 12th place in the final BCS standings.
Notes:
The conference champion of the six BCS conferences must have an average ranking of 12 or higher for a 4-year period, or the automatic selection may be revoked.
Only two teams from a conference may participate in BCS bowls regardless of eligibility.
Becoming BCS bowl eligible does not garantee an invitation.

ESPN who? I'm sorry, I don't watch them. Unless it's basketball. I don't watch Sportscenter or any other sports show for that matter. Nor do I read any publications. They all will say basically the same thing. All I am concerned with is ND getting healthy and winning the bowl game.

Everyone needs to find Wake up the Echoes (the History of Notre Dame Football) and pay attention to Ara when asked about the 1966 Michigan State game. Paraphrased he said that ND probably gets too many undeserved accolades and too many undeserved complaints. People overreact to ND - you just have to live with it.

In hindsight both sides of this has been displayed during the 2006 pre-season and season.

We were ranked in the top 3 in most pre-season polls; probably not deserved. Now that we have lost two games, if you listen to the commentary, we suck; probably not deserved.

Just be happy they are bitching.

W/ the Pac-10 and Big Ten winners in the NC title game, 5 of the other 8 spots are gonna go automatic as follows: SEC champ, Big XII champ, Big East champ, ACC champ, Boise State. What 3 teams deserve the final spots so much more than the Irish? Here are your choices:

Michigan-will definetely get picked by the Rose Bowl, so they're in.

Florida-Arkansas loser OR LSU-One of these teams will definetely get picked, so there's team #2, but both cannot b/c 3 teams from the same conference can't go, leaving one more spot.

Cal-3 loss team

Texas-3 loss team, lost to Kansas State and Texas A&M

Oklahoma-Nebraska loser-3-loss team w/ no win on its schedule anymore impressive than Georgia Tech or PSU

G. Tech-Wake loser-will be a team that either 1.Lost to Notre Dame, or 2.Lost to a team that lost to Notre Dame.

A 2nd team from the Big East-Now here's where it get's interesting. If Rutgers were to beat WVU on Saturday, they'd get the automatic bid as conference champs, leaving Louisville sitting right there at (probably) 11-1.

I'd say if Rutgers wins Saturday, then there will be a team (probly Louisville, maybe Florida or LSU depending on the Florida-Arkansas outcome) w/ a legitimate gripe.

But if Rutgers loses, I have no problem w/ ND getting a bid when looking at this list. Rutgers would have 2 losses, one being to Cincinatti. WVU would have 2 w/ one to unranked USF. I don't think the 2nd team in any conference other than the Big Ten and SEC deserves it all that much more than Notre Dame either, and you can't take the 3rd team in any conference, which means no Wisconsin and either LSU or the Florida-Arkansas loser has to sit it out too. So it all depends on that game to me.
