Zach Robertson, OL, 6-5, 305, St. John Bosco High School, Bellflower, CA currently holds a scholarship offer from Notre Dame. His coach Jason Negro has a very firm idea of why his standout lineman is attracting so much attention.
“One of the things is his size and physicality,” Negro explained. “He’s a super big wide body guy with long reach. He could definitely play the tackle spot at the college level and he’s super physical who’s a big finisher, very much like Damien Mama who just left here.”
Mama, who Notre Dame recruited heavily last year, but ended up signing with USC formed a formidable offensive line tandem last year with Robertson. Negro said that his 2015 recruit compares well with Mama.
“He’s very versatile,” said his head coach. “He could play left side, right side, he could play guard or tackle. We were very fortunate last year to have some really good guys up front. When we needed to move him around and get him against different people, he totally showed the ability to do that. Toward the end of the season, Damien was playing on the inside and Zach ended up playing left tackle.”
Negro attributes Robertson’s versatility to his athleticism.
“He’s got really good footwork,” his coach said. “He’s able to move lateral as well as vertical extremely well. He does a great job in space getting to the next level. We’re a zone-based offense, much like what Notre Dame does.”
According to Negro, Robertson and others have benefited immensely by watching Mama and others go through the recruiting process. But, the head coach says it’s more than just recruiting that benefits from other top players in the program.
“Being around some of the D-I recruits we have, from a work ethic standpoint and a practice standpoint, these kids see what it’s going to take to play at the next level and I think that’s what makes these kids much better,” he said. “They all have the physical abilities, but if you’re not practicing hard or doing those things, you’re not going to reach your potential.”
Negro said that Robertson was extremely excited about the Notre Dame scholarship offer.
“Being on the national front in terms of college football is certainly something that is really great,” stated Negro. “They probably have the largest national audience of any school in the country.”
Robertson has yet to narrow his numerous scholarship offers at this point. He also hasn’t begun scheduling any visits.
“Their offers are just rolling in,” Negro said. “At some point, prior to us starting spring ball in May, we’re going to sit down and try to narrow it down and figure out if he wants to take those trips and which trips he wants to make.”
