good answer! In all seriousness though, the university is embarrassed by college kids getting drunk and having sex at the number #1 party school in the country, the hazing, yeah, kinda bad, but compared to some of the garbage that has been coming out of that teachers mouth is minor. I think UW Madison needs to do some thinking about some things. I would think that professor is damaging their imagine a tad more than kids in the band getting wasted and having sex. Never would have known about it if I didn't see that headline on ESPN yesterday.

really, when it comes to the "nutjob" professor, it comes down to an issue of freedom of speech, academic freedom, and academic integrity. Especially when it comes to polysci and public policy, there's a fine line between "nutjob" and radical theorist. There's really no right and wrong, it's just opinion backed by facts (however sparse). And, in the name of academics, no university wants to err on the side of censorship.

However, there's no excuse for hazing someone. I'd say that UW-Mad's image is worse off for this than for the opinion of one of its professors. People are entitled to speak their opinion. However, they aren't entitled to sexually abuse others.

I agree. Regardless of our views of Professor Barrett's own personal theories, you cannot suppress the free exchange of ideas in the academic setting. However, a lot of the stuff about the band seems rather harmless, although we don't have a lot of specifics. One of the quotes from the article, though, was, "multiple reports of highly sexualized banter taking place that made several women in particular feel quite uncomfortable" If that was the worst of the sexual misconduct...we might never know.

i agree with you guys up to a point, sexual harrassment can never be tolerated and hazing that results in personal injury rather it be physical and/or mental must never be tolerated. But freedom of speech protection does not apply to Professor Barrett's situation. He can say what he thinks outside of the lecture hall, but when he is teaching, he does not get to spew his wacked out opinions on what he thinks happened on 9/11 to his students. His false beliefs supported by no facts is nothing short of hate speech, and that type of speech should never be protected by freedom of speech, especially when he spews that shit onto his students, who he has great control over. And from what I understand, he doesn't leave much room for debate in his classroom.

Both situations do not look good for UW-Madisons image and reputation.
