So my wife decides we have to get new carpeting for our house. I first argue that we are only planning on living here for 3 more years and then we are going to build. Common sense and women however are an oxymoron, so "we" decided to get it anyway. Well for those of you that have never ordered carpet, you can call a carpet store and have them come and measure your carpet for no cost. So I called a local furniture/carpet store and spoke with a nice gentleman who said he would come to my house last Saturday at 8. Saturday morning came and the door bell rang promptly at 8. I threw on a tank, went downstairs and opened the door. We greet one another and the gentleman asks me if I went to ND? Sometime I forget about the leprechaun tattoo on left shoulder. I said no but I was a lifelong fan. He said, "my 2nd cousin is Bob Davie". Uncomfortable silence..... I pulled myself together and started to small talk with him. Apparently, his dad and Davie's dad were brothers and used to go out each and every saturday to south bend for home games. He stated that no matter what people say, the administration was mostly to blame for the down turn in the football program. Davie wanted to go for all the best players and the administration would not let them in, apparently they were cracking down on their academic standards. He said that, when he took over Holtz told him this and it changed drastically from when Lou was first hired.

I asked him why CW has been able to get the recruits, he said that he didn't know.

I also find it ironic that Mich. beat us the same day I met Davie's cousin.

Just thought I'd pass along since this guy was a family member.

I actually believe the guy. I still don't think Davie wasa great coach, but I do believe he could have done much better had his hands not been shackled with admissions. We heard similar things from Holtz near the end of his tenure at ND. Willingham didn't even attempt to go after the best players.

Funny that CW seems to be having no problems.

I truly believe that the administration at ND de-emphasized football near the end of the Holtz era and is just starting to re-emphasize it now.

I'm not defending Davie or Willingham, they were clearly bad coaches. But I do think that they were not playing with the same admission standards as CW.

Nice. L
Ahh good ol' Bob.
As I've listened to Bob in the booth, these last three weeks, he has dropped some very telling nuggets of his coaching philosophy during game analysis.
As Charlie and the boys went for it on those two 4 and 1's in Atlanta, Bob dropped a comment about how making a decision like this and failing, can reap enormous criticism on the head coach and that from there on he will 'labeled' a bad decision maker or tenative or something to that effect. He said with quite an amount of indignity, too.
There have been a couple of other nuggets but I can't remember them right now.
I found 'em telling.

I would probably have the carpet removed immediately. It's just bad luck to even look at something like that.

Let's be honest though, Davie's recruiting classes were much better than Ty's. He actually had great players, solid D's, but never settled on a good offensive philosophy. Had he done so we would have fared better... (I doubt it would have prevented his firing though)

Ty was a piss-poor recruiter. He had one good year and had he finished out his last year, still would have had a crappy year.

Weis is aggressive in recruiting like Davie, but is someone that generates more excitement and will develop guys into NFL material...so he will do even better.

But let's not pretend that Davie had bad recruits:

Yeah, Davie's recruits were pretty good. It was just the offensive philosophy that was putrid. I still remember us trying to run option against Nebraska. We were running option even when we did not have the personnel to run option effectively. The defenses were good though. As for Ty......he has to be one of the most ill-prepared coaches in college football. He sucks. Lou Holtz does mention the admissions situation and how it affected him toward the latter part of his tenure.

Great summary...I fully agree.

Davie simply could not decide on a GOOD offense...and for some reason did not recognize that NO team would be successful running a gimmick like the option anymore. Miami showed the world when they crushed Nebraska's option offense...it was buried that very day.

Ty...could not say it better than you did.

Holtz was too tired to continue, he made the right call in leaving.

Davie was a turd. He always whinned about everything. Admissions were too tough, ND's schedule was too hard. BTW, what college was so quick to snatch him up to be their head coach?

Actually, he's got a pretty sweet job right now.

Let's face it, if he wanted to go be a D-coordinator somewhere, he would have a job. Probably NOT a HC, but a DC.

However, I have heard interviews with him...he's clear about it. He loves his job.

Hell, I would too...

He also said that Bob will likely never coach again becuase he likes his current job a lot. He lives in Arizona now and is enjoying the time he has with his family. Can't knock a guy for that.

My understanding is that Holtz was forced out. Technically he resigned. But my understanding is that behind the scenes, he pretty much didn't have a choice. They let him resign as a sign of respect, but he pretty much had to go.

That's an unfounded rumor that people liked to throw around.

My only good source on this was a priest who sat on the committee thta took his resignation. He indicated that they were floored and the asked him to stay.

Don't forget that was the year Holtz's wife was diagnosed with Cancer and her doctors were in Florida.

Damn near impossible to be a HC and manage your wife's illness in Florida.
