Am I going completely nuts or did someone throw a semi-full water bottle at the referee Saturday night while he was calling an unnecessary roughness penatly on Georgia Tech for hitting Brady Quinn as he went out of bounds?

Did anyone not see this? Those idiot announcers never even said a word about it.

Guys, please don't throw crap on the field/court at sporting events. I know we're all passionate about our sports and our teams, but throwing beverages and food at people? Moronic.

I could be wrong, but I can swear that I saw a Dasani water bottle land at that ref's feet and barely miss hitting him.

Yes it happened it was pretty obvious to miss...you could hear the PA announcer give the speech about throwing things onto the field will lead to you being ejected.

You saw one. Apparently there were many more off camera, but I don't think the engineering students had the arm strength to get them there.

I can't confirm it was a desani bottle but i definately saw a water bottle nearly hit the ref after the helmet to helmet call. It is very unacceptable ...but how did a guy gun it that far? I like to think our fans are a little classier but its right to say its completely unacceptable

I'm surprised this isn't being made as big of a deal as it could be by these weasel hack writers out there.

I watched as our team came back to win the conference tournament and advance to the Big Dance. We played a team in their home state and the crowd was mostly their followers. After we won, on a last second controversial play, people were throwing beverages all over the court. Mid court was literally flooded with soda, water and beer (we played the game in a hockey stadium, thus they can sell beer).

That kind of thing makes me angry. Just goes to show people care more about how things affect them than being responsible and doing the right thing.

yep I saw it, and heard the PA announcer soon after. Michigan pulled the same crap last year, people hate ND, someone mentioned on TV that the best rivalary in college football is whoever is playing Notre Dame, I couldn't agree more, the GT fans were livid during that game you could just sense it, much like the Michigan fans last year.

No one in college football generates more hate than ND, and when its a close game like the GT, and Michigan games were it gets even worse because fans start questioning every call. When was the last time GT had a bigger game than this, I sure can't remember.

PSU next year will be a deadly envirnoment, I'm thinking of going because its fairly close, but I have a feeling I'll end up getting into a fight or something, and being a probationary firefighter for the FDNY the last thing I need is to get into any trouble, so I might skip that event.

Lets just hope no one throws anything at our players, don't get me wrong I care for the refs well being as well, but I just happen to care more about our players well being..

Dude...when that bottle was thrown at the UConn, or was it Syracuse....damn, cant remember...either way, that year under Dougherty, freaking SI ripped us a new one how ND wasn't ND anymore because we made fun of Kalil El-Alamine for having illegitimate kids and b/c we threw a water bottle. Yet, nothing is even mentioned about GT's sportsmanship!!!

Why would the announcers have to say anything? Everybody saw it. I for one hate when announcers get sanctimonious about fan behavior, or player behavior. Your job isn't to moralize up there, nobody cares about your opinion of the behavior of a fan or player. Your job is to announce the football game.

This was just a little bit after GT commercial about how GT stands for integrity. The people I was with all started laughing at that one, especially when you could hear the PA guy telling them to stop. but hey, we shouldn't compare ourselves to other colleges. it's a big deal if ND does it b/c we're better than that. I guess it's not a big deal that GT and UM do it b/c they're not better than that.

I thought the bottle definitely bounced up and hit the ref in the arm. and he just went right on with the call, hardly even flinched.

Well, they could have commentated it...

"And after making the call, the ref gets hit with a water bottle. How do you rank that throw, Bob."

"Well, ya know, when I was coaching, I didn't believe in throwing all that much, but like I said before, this coach doesn't want to regret using Calvin Johnson more...kinda like I regret not using David Givens that much..."

"So, Bob, you are saying that one, you called your game pretty much like Coach Nix up in the booth, and two, you don't really have a ruler to judge that thrown water bottle by?"

"EXACTLY! Hell, you I shoulda recruited that kid in the stands. Maybe I could waste his ability to throw the ball, too."

"Haha...No, no, Coach... You are better up here making our audience dumber with every word that comes out of your mouth...haha."

"Hahahaha..."

*Both men laugh and put their arms around each other*

*Herbstreit leaves & returns with a Shotgun. Then, procedes to go Old Yellar on the two chuckling idiots*

They get paid a lot of money to have a thought or opinion.

Call the game and anything happening within as you see it.

The great part about the "integrity" of the GT students was shown before the game. As we were walking in to the stadium a group of students dressed in coat jackets and the girls all prettied up (by the way, why would you dress like that to a game? But that is for another post I guess) walking into Bobby Dodd and chanting "F*** Notre Dame" classless, pure classless. But I sat in the endzone of Quinn's touchdown and that endzone was littered with bottles and anything else they could throw after the helmet to helmet blow. It happened again later in the game in the opposite endzone, after the Calvin Johnson replay fiasco.

By the way, I have read this site for awhile now and am just starting to post, this site is great and enjoy reading all of it. Living in the South it was nice to see the Irish in my own back yard for a change!

I would say judgment was impaired by a whole day of tailgating. After all, Game Day was there and the lots were open since the morning. I am not, repeat, am not condoning their idiocy (as they still - even when sober - do not see the personal foul call), but am saying that every "som'r teeth" asshole was completely impaired by the evening which only magnified the situation. Oh and the students, we all make bad decisions every once in awhile from ages 17-21 when drinking [since 8:00 in the a.m.].

ChiND I am not disagreeing that mistakes are made but I guess being there all day and tailgating, I saw first hand more things then just that. At least the lot we were in was interesting. I am used to being in The Bend for tailgating and seeing how (for the majority) Notre Dame fans always seem to be inviting to opposing fans there to enjoy the game. We had a great time meeting fans from Texas and Alabama at our tailgate, but the Tech people around were just not very impressive or friendly. I know Notre Dame has there share of Jack Ass fans as well, but we always hear people say how great of an experience it is to go to South Bend because they were treated well by the people, it was just not that way. This might not make sense, but I ramble.
