I seem to see a lot more talk about the 2008 election as I skim through some of my recent readings.

I've seen the obvious candidates like Hillary Clinton, John Kerry and even Barrack Obama, John Edwards and Howard Dean (really?). On the flip side, there is Rudy Guiliani, John McCain and Dick Chaney. One poll I saw suggest an election between Hillary Clinton and Condelezza Rice!! Surely, the Republicans have someone else in mind (I hope).

I'm not quite sure who the viable candidate really are. In another thread, I mention my guy George Allen (R) from Virginia would be my choice. Lately, Sam Brownback (R) of Kansas has been an interesting read.

Who do you guys like as potential candidates and why? I could use some help studying up on some of these guys.

I'd say Rudy in '08. I think he has the best chance vs. the probable Clinton/Obama ticket. Plus it'll be complete mayhem to possibly have NY as a swing state

John McCain all the way! He's one of the few politicians that I feel is fairly honest and ethical. Plus, he's a big sports guy. I know he pushed the NFL hard when they cracked down on Jake Plummer for wearing Pat Tillman's number on his jersey and shoe.

Jigga,
I normally agree with nearly all you say, but you're wrong here buddy. It'll be WARNER, former guv of VA.

I respected and actually liked McCain until this past year when he went all huggy/kissy w/ BushCo, the same people who destroyed his 2000 bid.

I am moving to Canada if there is another Clinton in office or if Rice runs. If Obama, Chaney or Kerry runs it would just be a joke.

McCain/Guliani ticket would be a winner if they run. I would love to see that ticket out of the Republicans b/c it would give me somebody I can vote for over Hillary.

Aero, I have to think the Republicans can do better than that.

I'm really trying to go outside of the box here, but it depends on who decides to run and who doesn't.

I agree K Mac, but I am actually intrigued by Kerry running again.

I have heard Al Gore suggested out of the Democrats. Yikes. I thought he was busy chasing ManBearPig.

Agreed on McCain, Domer.

Who is Warner? Tell me more about him...

Was born in Indy and grew up in IL. Went to GW and then Harvard Law School. Worked on Sen. Dodd's (D-CT) staff. Gained telecommunications industry experience. Then, as managing director of Columbia Capital Corporation he helped found or was an early investor in a number of technology companies. He co-founded Nextel, as well as Capital Cellular Corporation, and built up an estimated fortune of over $200 million.

Warner worked with moderate Republican legislators and the business community to reform the tax code in 2004, lowering food and income taxes, and increasing the sales and cigarette taxes in 2004, despite his campaign pledge that he would not raise taxes. The action saved the state's Aaa/AAA bond rating (key for lower borrowing costs) , held at the time by only 5 other states, and allowed the single largest investment in K-12 education (key for the US to remain competitive) in Virginia history.

Warner's home-state popularity is high, polling in the final year of his term with an 80% approval rating from Washington Post, and 76% from Mason-Dixon Political Media Research.

That's his background in a nutshell. Here's a link for his policy positions:

Aero, it's an interesting ticket that very well could win, esp. if the Ds do something stupid and nominate someone from their past and posture themselves as Repub-lite and don't show any spine, all things that are entirely possible.

As a NYC resident for 7years, that worked across the street from the WTC, used the WTC subway stop 2x a day, would have been walking under where the first plane hit on 9/11/01, if not for my subway being inexplicably delayed for 15mins, I have some strong feelings on RudyG.

He WAS the President of the US from 9/11 through about 9/14/01. He held NYC and the nation together and moved us forward. As "America's Mayor", he also did a lot of good things for NYC (and also IMHO, some bad ones as well). All in all, he left NYC in better shape than when he started.

That being said, he has built huge political capital that spans nearly the entire electorate. However, the one area in which he is weak, is with the far right wing. They view him as way too liberal. However, I believe that on a national scale, he'd be able to attract enough Ds and INDs to help the ticket, besides, he could even help turn NY with its 20 something Electoral votes red (as I'm a D, perish the thought), which would spell disaster for ANY D running.

It's a bit early, but I hope BOTH can do better than that. Esp. the Ds. The problem w/ Gore and Kerry is that they showed absolutely ZERO backbone. While I didn't like Regan, I do respect the fact that he believed in what he said/did and stood for (his) principals, rather than poll and shape his opinions to the masses, like everyone of his successors (and their opponents) have done.

It's a different century/millenium, with new opportunities/challenges/threats, we need new ideas, on both sides of the aisle, to help the country move forward.

Geez, have I been transported to a political blog??????? GO IRISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll take Weis / Quinn for my ticket in '08, with Minter as Sec. of Defense (IF it improves this year.......) and Mendoza Chief of Homeland Security.

Definitely McCain. Depending on which university I attend, I might volunteer for his campaign.

Another interesting thing about him is that shortly after the 2004 election, a poll found that among democrats, John McCain is more likable than Hilary Clinton---that doesn't mean they would vote for him, but it sends a clear message about both candidates.

I think McCain has the toughness, respectability, and political skill to get us out of Iraq with a victory.

The democrats best bet is with this Warner guy. But fortunately for us, they'll stick with Clinton for the name recognition.

As a Canadian, I don't follow American politics that much, but at the democratic convention Barrack Obama's speach made enough of an impression on me, to get my vote.

Dont for get about Gore. He has a lot of money and has changed over the past 8 years a lot. He is actually funny now. Not to mention his movie on global warming. (would suggest seeing it) Rumors are going around Wisconsin that Fiengold might run. He would be a good president IMO. I think my ticket would be for Edwards/Obama or Gore/Edwards.

I don't have a dog in this race yet, but some observations:
McCain - not conservative enough for the GOP. Tough to get nomination but if he did, could win the whole shebang.
Giuliani - ibid. Pro-gun control, pro-gay rights, pro-choice. Skeletons in closet.
Condi Rice - not gonna run. NFL commish ?
Dick Cheney - political career over after he leaves office.
George Allen - GOP darling. No skeletons. Might be just unknown enough (See Bill Clinton)
Bill Frist - Accomplished, respected but could he get ANY Democrats to vote for him?
Hillary Clinton - Too well known! Vehement opposition. "Oh no, not again!" Marital strangeness might be too much for most Americans.
Al Gore - Might be just too strange. Unscientific crusades scare people. (Or is it just me?)
Barak Obama - Untarnished solid reputation. Inexperience and race (unfortunately) might be roadblock.
John Kerry - "War in Lebanon would not have happened, if I were president." PLEASE !!
Tom Daschle - Too wimpy. We are at war after all.

My pre-race picks: George Allen, Pres. - Newt Gingrich, V.P.

The Commander And Chief.

The Commander And Chief.

Hillary Clinton For President. Some tidbits about Rudy you might not no. His first wife was his cousin,he treated his second wife ( who was the first lady of New York ) like shyt. She was a sucessful anchor woman for a local station when she met that bastard. He took so much credit he didnt deserve for 9-11 that it is crazy. Turn to find out his Police Commisioner was corrupt working with the mob while he was Rudy's boy. Was convicted last month for his crime's. Had his name tooking from a jail that was named after him just last month. Bernard Kerik the first police commisioner of the history of New York City to be convicted of a crime. Oh lest not forget he was suppose to be our first Homeland Security Chief but jack ass (Bush) found out about his bullshit and asked him to drop out of the running. Believe me there more but have to said, but I have take the future wife out for her B-day. Rudy not running for jack. To many skeletons in the closet to be opened.

You missed a couple of Dems who are actually running or will be (since basically none of the people above will be):
Bill Richardson - Foreign policy expert, brilliant mind, reformer in a corrupt state, pro-border control, etc.
Evan Bayh - one of the more conservative Dems...voted more with Bush than his own party
Mark Warner - Virginia Gov... http://www.draftmarkwarner.com/
