Mel Kiper Predictions
Mel Kiper Predictions
Your absolutely correct about Kiwanuka, Scooper. D'Brickashaw Ferguson "took him to school" in the practices [I don't believe he played when BC-Maryland meet during the regular season] Furthermore, according to "Patriots Football Weekly," Kiwi's weaknesses are that he "Struggles when teams run right at him as he doesn't have the leverage to hold the point of attack. Doesn't seem to have the room to bulk up as he is naturally a long, lanky kid. Needs to develop more technique and improve trying to shed blocks."
Two of the other players mentioned above are being considered by the Patriots who, much to Mel Kiper's dismay, never follow the script in drafting - and probably do not even read his predictions! Instead, Bill Belichick relies more on the trusted evaluations from college coaches with whom he has had previous ties and the evaluations of players in systems that ar similiar to their own - Charlie Weis (ND), Kirk Ferentz (Iowa), Pat Hill (Fresno St) and Al Groh (VA), to name four.
With 11 choices in this year's draft; it wouldn't surprise me if they traded up or down.
Its ironic that, since they just signed Richard Seymour to an extension; that the local media criticized the Patriots for taking a defensive lineman who "had only one sack at Georgia and was too tall to play defensive tackle and too slow to play defensive end." Who did they want them to draft instead, WR David Terrell from Michigan!
The Patriots showed a great deal of interest in Maurice Stovall at the combine and, although the current braintrust does not draft running backs or wide receivers in the first round (different services have them taking LenDale White RB, USC[before he showed up for the recent USC workout day leading an unanamed scout to state that he "was so out of shape that he needed a bra". This gives credence to a scouting services mo is that he "had a questionbale work ethnic on and off the field, which is why he left school early"] Santonio Holmes, WR, Ohio St., DeAngelo Williams, RB, Memphis and Lawrence Moroney, RB, Minnesota [who is visiting Foxborough today] . Maurice Stovall is ranked fourth among wide receivers. I mentioned that the Patriots spent a great deal of time talking with him at the Combine on a previous post. They mentioned that his strengths were that he was a "big target who really came on strong his senior year. Uses his size to his advantage to make the tough catches in traffic. Impressive body control and agility at his size. High points the jump ball. A good downfield blocker. Has the ability to dominate in the red zone. Intriguing prospect who excelled at the Senior Bowl." Ironically, he would be replacing another Notre Dame receiver, David Givens and would be a perfect complement to the speedy, but diminutive Deon Branch.
Richard Marshall (5'11", 190 CB) from Fresno State is another player that the Pats have shown a great deal of interest in. He was very impressive at the Combine, running a 4.42 in the 40, that helped him move up on many team's boards. He lead the Bulldogs in tqckles last season with 75, something that's considered rare for a cornerback. He also returned three interceptions for touchdowns during his college career [The Patriots drafted two players from Fresno State last season, including their # 1 pick].
Finally, don't be surprised if they take a flyer on G Dan Stevenson, who Coach Weis described as a player who "reminded him of Joe Andruzzi, a player he coached with New England" in the later rounds. Besides, now that that no longer have their LSU pipeline with Nick Saban now coaching the Dolphins; don't be surprised if Notre Dame and athletes who played for Coach Charlie Weis begin to show up in New England!
