Mel moves around so much his hair gets whiplash. He's had both of these guys sniffing around the late first and haning around in the second.

As a Bengals fan, I'd love to beat Chicago to the punch and get Fasano in the late second.

Kiper is a 'draft expert' for the four letter network because isn't good enough to be a scout for an NFL team. He loves the sound of his own voice only slightly less than he loves his hideous hair.

Stovall doen't get by the Eagles in the second round

Mel Kiper has the Bears taking some cornerback from Fresno State in the first round.

This guy is a third round pick at best. Either Kiper doesn't think highly of the Bears decision makers or he has no concept of value.

Not long ago Kiper had Fasano going in the first round. What did he do for his stock to drop so much? He had good workouts. Stovall also had good workouts and ran a good 40 time(4.58) for a guy his size, much better than a simalar player in Mike Williams who ran a4.7 last year.

What happened with the DE from Boston College Kiwanka(sp?). Last year he was a definite top 10 to 15 pick. This year everyone has him going in the second round. Did he have a bad year? Staying his final year cost him millions.

Kiwi had some injury issues, but still put up good numbers, though less than his freakish junior numbers. He had a poor showing the week of the Senior Bowl, which has hurt his stock. He didn't show much versatility in his pass rush moves and was not great against the run. Then again, most of his practice reps were against Ferguson. Who would look good against him? But a top 10 pick should win that one some of the time.

I don't think he tested very well, either. He is still a good football player, though. Somebody taking him in the second would get a tremendous value, I think.

Thanks scoop......I really didn't follow BC this past season because we didn't play them, but I remember watching him his jr year and he was phenomenal . I'm surprised he didn't test well, because he appears to be a smart kid opting to stay his sr year to earn his degree, even though he was projected to go real high in the draft.

I hope my team gets him in the later rounds, he'd be a real steal. Thats why I love the NFL draft, you can get quality in any round.

I could see Coughlin bringing him in, he loves those ND/BC guys. Giants are pretty stacked at DE though.

Mel Kiper Predictions

Mel Kiper Predictions

Your absolutely correct about Kiwanuka, Scooper. D'Brickashaw Ferguson "took him to school" in the practices [I don't believe he played when BC-Maryland meet during the regular season] Furthermore, according to "Patriots Football Weekly," Kiwi's weaknesses are that he "Struggles when teams run right at him as he doesn't have the leverage to hold the point of attack. Doesn't seem to have the room to bulk up as he is naturally a long, lanky kid. Needs to develop more technique and improve trying to shed blocks."
Two of the other players mentioned above are being considered by the Patriots who, much to Mel Kiper's dismay, never follow the script in drafting - and probably do not even read his predictions! Instead, Bill Belichick relies more on the trusted evaluations from college coaches with whom he has had previous ties and the evaluations of players in systems that ar similiar to their own - Charlie Weis (ND), Kirk Ferentz (Iowa), Pat Hill (Fresno St) and Al Groh (VA), to name four.
With 11 choices in this year's draft; it wouldn't surprise me if they traded up or down.
Its ironic that, since they just signed Richard Seymour to an extension; that the local media criticized the Patriots for taking a defensive lineman who "had only one sack at Georgia and was too tall to play defensive tackle and too slow to play defensive end." Who did they want them to draft instead, WR David Terrell from Michigan!
The Patriots showed a great deal of interest in Maurice Stovall at the combine and, although the current braintrust does not draft running backs or wide receivers in the first round (different services have them taking LenDale White RB, USC[before he showed up for the recent USC workout day leading an unanamed scout to state that he "was so out of shape that he needed a bra". This gives credence to a scouting services mo is that he "had a questionbale work ethnic on and off the field, which is why he left school early"] Santonio Holmes, WR, Ohio St., DeAngelo Williams, RB, Memphis and Lawrence Moroney, RB, Minnesota [who is visiting Foxborough today] . Maurice Stovall is ranked fourth among wide receivers. I mentioned that the Patriots spent a great deal of time talking with him at the Combine on a previous post. They mentioned that his strengths were that he was a "big target who really came on strong his senior year. Uses his size to his advantage to make the tough catches in traffic. Impressive body control and agility at his size. High points the jump ball. A good downfield blocker. Has the ability to dominate in the red zone. Intriguing prospect who excelled at the Senior Bowl." Ironically, he would be replacing another Notre Dame receiver, David Givens and would be a perfect complement to the speedy, but diminutive Deon Branch.
Richard Marshall (5'11", 190 CB) from Fresno State is another player that the Pats have shown a great deal of interest in. He was very impressive at the Combine, running a 4.42 in the 40, that helped him move up on many team's boards. He lead the Bulldogs in tqckles last season with 75, something that's considered rare for a cornerback. He also returned three interceptions for touchdowns during his college career [The Patriots drafted two players from Fresno State last season, including their # 1 pick].
Finally, don't be surprised if they take a flyer on G Dan Stevenson, who Coach Weis described as a player who "reminded him of Joe Andruzzi, a player he coached with New England" in the later rounds. Besides, now that that no longer have their LSU pipeline with Nick Saban now coaching the Dolphins; don't be surprised if Notre Dame and athletes who played for Coach Charlie Weis begin to show up in New England!

Sorry about the confusion. By "test well" I was referring to physical tests. His strength and agility numbers were not elite, if I recall correctly. I've heard nothing to indicate any mental or attitude problems. I think he's pretty strong there.

I don't follow BC either, but I've read up a lot on him and followed his post season as well as other defensive players that will fall in his part of the draft. As a Bengals fan, I've taken a strong interest in the defensive prospects in the late round one area.

off ND topic, but on draft topic...does Kiper say where he thinks Deangelo is going? Boy, ND missed out on finding him...He is such a great person.

Being a Steelers fan, I'd love to see Stovall go to the Steelers because we lost Randle El to Washington and ever since Plaxico left we've been missing a tall reciever who can go up and get the ball, which Stovall did countless times during the 2005 campaign.

I just can't see Stovall falling past the second round. Too many teams have a need for that big dependable WR. You gotta figure teams like the Eagles, Bills, Steelers, Pats etc would have to take him in the second. Heck the Giants courted Keyshawn Johnson hard this offseason until he signed with Carolina so they'd probably be inclined to take a guy like Stovall in the second, seeing how he's similar in size and faster than Keyshawn.

It'll be interesting to see if Stevenson and LeVoir get drafted. Usually experienced starting offensive linemen at ND get drafted(all 5 olinemen from the 2002 season were drafted) so I don't see why these two won't. Last I checked ND had the most O linemen in the NFL, that was a year ago so they may have falled a bit.

Do any of you guys think that Hoyte will be drafted? Mays? I really hope these two guys get a chance to play in the NFL. The team that drafts them won't be disappointed. They both had good Senior seasons so maybe in the 5-7th rounds for these two?

I really think Hoyte could be somebody's 7th round pick, but even if he isn't I'm sure he'll get invited to camp somewhere. I'd be pretty shocked if Mays was drafted, but he's another one who I think will sign somewhere as an undrafted free agent.

I'm just wondering, does anyone remember who Mel had the Giants taking in the first round? I didn't watch the show, and espn.com makes you pay to see Mel's mock draft, which is fairly sensless since they air it on sportscenter, so I'm just wondering who Eddie Munster has them taking.
