“I probably didn’t do a very good job of being a head coach in the spring. I think I did a pretty good job of being an installer of the offense but I didn’t think I did a very good job of being a head coach. This year I think I will be able to spend more time on special teams and on defense than I did last year, because I think our offense coaches now are able to carry more of the load than they were able to last year.” - CW

Sigh of relief.....now.

Smart coaches know when they can improve and work to do so.

Bad coaches continue to try and hammer that square peg into a round hole.

Hey, Charlie knew a year ago the quickest way to success was to focus on the offense, considering its his specialty and he had all those returning starters. I think this year we'll see the defense improve. Minter's defenses (from what I've read) usually take a year to learn his system anyway, and tend to show fairly strong improvement in the second year. Hopefully that'll hold true, although I have to admit I haven't fallen in love w/ his scheme thus far.

To defend Minter a little he had to play with the hand he was delt. I think Minter's D is more successful with quicker players. I'm excited to see what next year brings...couple of shut down CB's coming into town can make a world of difference and if Minter and Weis have a plan to get some pressure on the QB we may have just as an exciting Defense as our offense is.

If we remember correctly, too, Mays got his ass through the hole early in the season and should have had a ton of sacks, but he was not agile enough, nor in control enough to make the sack. We had some sweet blitzes, but I think we probably had to call them off, because Mays was unable to capitalize.
