Bassett power ratings list Irish offense as 15.9 and defense as 5.7 (total 21.6). ND's first opponent is Georgia Tech listed at 12.2 and 6.2 (total 18.4). Penn St (ND's second game) is listed as 14.8 and 6.9 (total 21.7).

What makes Penn St the more dangerous opponent is that they are more likely to score against the ND defense than ND score against them. Information about other teams at (use the 'current model'): www.members.cox.net/gbassett/football/

What Am I Missing?

What Am I Missing?

The data this system is using must be from compiling statistics from last season's games. How, then, can this information be relevant in making predictions and determining results of games played this year? The example that immediately comes to mind is USC. It's difficult to comprehend the replacements for the backfield tandem of Bush and White duplicating their production. How can a quarterback with little [Booty] or not [Sanchez] experience replicate the effectiveness of Lienhart. Am I missing something? How effective - what percentage - were these selections during the 2005 season?

Subway Alum - MA,

You did not miss a thing. Since ND, Penn St and Georgia Tech did not have a high graduation turnover, the numbers are an early (preseason) indicator. Bassett power ratings scored 71.7% and consistently beat the opening vegas line.

Go Irish!

I don't know about this site exactly but a lot of sites have a point value for returning players and their over all experience etc...

I'm not real big on these sites but some of them do a pretty good job
