No position brings more versatility, where prospects can shift to receiver, linebacker, cornerback or safety depending on their skill sets. With Notre Dame's depth chart boosted by James Aldridge, Munir Prince and Luke Schmidt, the Irish could return to a recruiting strategy that worked wonders under Lou Holtz when the program signed All-American running backs such as Jeff Burris then developed them into first-round picks at other positions.

Now where have I heard this before? :)

Scoop, here's my only thing with this.

This roster is going to be so incredibly thin after 2006 that I think they need to bring guys in who can play certain positions NOW. College football is an impatient and fickle animal. I'm not so sure Weis has the time to be bringing guys in and shifting them around all over the field....yet.

But nice work on grabbing this portion of the story. You did just say this earlier in the week.

I'm not advocating filling the roster with them. I'm just saying they tend to be the best athletes on high school teams. Many of them, though listed by scout or rivals as rb's actually play a bit of defense in HS.

If a few guys who are 6-0 200 pounds and run a 4.5 forty want to come on and play, I'm all for trying to find something for them to do. Lou was a master at this. Sure, you want to target the best at a given position, but some versatility is nice. This doesn't only apply to RB's.

Look at Iowa's track record in recent years with the O-line. Their two best were undoubtedly Gallery and Steinbach. These guys were not listed as linemen as recruits. They were high school tight ends who still have the athleticism to show for it.

My argument isn't to bring in a glut of running backs. It's simply to get as athletic as possible.

Weis is getting there, Scoop.

Guys like Barnes, Little, Edwards in the Class of 2007....very interchangeable kids from what I've seen.

In 3 or 4 years if things continue, you're going to see an ND roster like you have never seen before. It will be like a friggin' track meet out there....only they'll know football, too.

Scary.

Like recent USC teams.

I think we should enjoy next year. The next couple of years after that should be interesting. That's when we could really pay for some significant deficiencies at key positions. Six Offensive Lineman out of three classes is suicide. We have a significant deficienciy at Defensive line as well. I'm keeping a glass half-full mentality though. Somehow, someway they will get through it and then begin to consistently challenge for National Championships.

Benn, Oglesby, Ragone, Clausen and Tyler....
Weis will get them all.

After I read that I slammed a beer and then broke the bottle over my head, partly out of my love for Charlie, partly because such a ridiculous haul is entirely possible.

I think I'm going to go wrestle a bear now.

An IMAGINERY bear?

No, really. ND will get all those guys. And that's coming from a paranoid Italian Catholic realist.

He was coming to ND. He was leaning so hard he could have fallen over.

Wasn't my fault he got a girl knocked up, St. Kiitts.

I'd like to toss in another thought.... With the 12 game schedule coming up, Notre Dame and everone else will need quality back-up players in every position. The occasional week off to "get well" won't be happening as often. Charlie needs to keep up the good work. There is no time to rest.

With this in mind, REUBEN MENDOZA needs to keep up the GREAT work as well. I don't remember seeing us winded in ANY game this year. Of course, we did have a fair share of 4thQ blowouts so....
