This is not supposed to be a good draft year at WR, however, don’t tell Notre Dame’s Maurice Stovall, who may have been the best player on the field this morning. Stovall, who some observers thought might be better suited to playing TE at the next level, weighed in at a very svelte 216 pounds on Monday – he was listed at 236 – and got plenty of separation on just about every rout he ran this morning. The 6-4 Stovall is a big, physical receiver who was very smooth on the break with decent upfield acceleration. Stovall, though, had a chance to put an exclamation point on his day during 11-on-11 action, but dropped an easy pass for what would have been a big gainer after beating two defenders to get wide open.

Stovall a TE? He's a bit too slight for that I think. I don't know how he'd do blocking DE's and LB'ers on running plays...Leave him at WR and let him be your possession guy over the middle. Could have a very nice carrer there at 6'5" w/ pretty good hands.

If they do move him to a possible TE it just hurts Fasano's draft stock even more.

Stovall a TE but not the Great Mike Williams?

Stovall is more of a WR than he is.

Mike Williams sucks. He's too big to be effective at WR. Stovall will be a nice possession and red-zone receiver.

He fits the mold of Ernest Wilford of Jacksonville. A tall big/physical WR that can make plays down at the goal line.

Stovall obviuosly works better at without the extra weight that would be required at the TE position also.

I have to admit, I was hoping the Bears drafted him. I wasn't alone on that either. I was at Soldier Field for the Draft and when they took Cedric Benson, a riot almost erupted.

Then, when he fell all the way to Detroit and was picked behind that Williamson guy from South Carolina, I had a feeling something was up.

And he wanted in a year early? I think he and Clarett both proved the NFL early entry guidelines are just fine the way they are.

Whenever people call a recruit receiver a "Mike Williams" type, I just laugh.

SC's Dwayne Jarrett doesn't seem any faster than Williams was. I could be wrong, but they seem pretty similar.

Stovall's career as a pro is going to be interesting.

I am amused when I read things like Stovall being moved to TE. Stovall did an excellent job blocking DB's but that is a far cry from blocking a 250 lb LB.

He is the prototype WR for the NFL. His size and speed are exceptional. A bright future in the NFL.

You can fix Stovall's problems. He needs to learn to be tougher coming out of breaks and getting position. If he'd had another year under Weis, he would probably be an all-star. Then, he would have an extra year to fix the occasional case of the dropsies. He also doesn't have to push off on smaller DB's which he was called for several times this year. He'll still develop into a great pro receiver. At least he blocks, unlike more than 60% of the receivers out there today. Blocking......what's that?

Mike Williams is not all that great. He looks big and slow. He was not ready to come out, but because of the money signs in his eyes he lost site of reality. I know Carolina needs a number 2 receiver. We had to part with Moose (sob, sob) and then we got stuck with Keary Colbert's vanishing a$$. He's from USC of course, proving that Norm Chow's system can work wonders for a WR. That's why I hope they get Mo.

They do it at USC and do it quite well. I'll say that much for those guys. Their receivers really stick those DBs on running plays.

I know Weis likes the small, productive types from the looks of things. But there is a lot to be said for the Stovall/Samardzija types that can block downfield. It's tougher for a DB to get around a 6-5 guy as opposed to a 5-10 guy.

Smith and Jarrett sprung Bush and White for a lot of their magnificent runs, not getting much credit for doing so either. Stovall has the body to lock up on NFL corners and drive them back.

Yeah it's hard for a 5'10" 190 lb WR to lock up a corner. Now a 6'5" 220 lb WR is a different story. As far as USC is concerned, it is easier to run when your line opens up gaping holes and your WR's lock up the corners. They put Bush in alot of good situations. I'm interested to see how he does behind a crappy line and WR's who only catch passes which is probably where he'll end up.

DFL,

Especially if, as expected, he becomes a Texan.

If I were the Texans' GM, I'd trade down to get some OL studs. Neither Bush nor Young will be nearly as good if they are running for their lives as Carr did this year.

That is the reason to take Young or Bush though because those guys can run and make plays.

We'll see how they translate into the NFL. Young is bigger than Vick, so I can see him being more durable if he wants to run around all over the place. But Bush is 200 pounds, which is not a between the tackles kind of back in the NFL. If he breaks to the outside, there won't be Pac 10 linebackers there waiting for him.

There were times this year when Stovall made DB's seem to dissapear under his blocks. It looked like a man playing tackle football in the backyard with little boys, just pushing them around. It was fun to watch. For all of his hard work in the running game, I'm happy for his chance to put up big numbers. He may as well name his first born Charlie, because the coach made him some money this year-that and his selflessness and work ethic. He's the one player for whom I'm the happiest. I'll always be a fan of his just about anywhere he goes.

I am ready to sacrifice a virgin for him to be available in the 2nd round for the Packers. I would love to have Stovall.

Sorry. I'm not willing to give up my life for a team I didn't follow.

I would, however, be willing to give up my left arm for Ngata to drop to the Bengals.

the Texans don't need any skll set players. They need Offensive linemen in the worst way.

From NFL Draft Countdown

Wednesday practice

At wide receiver Notre Dame's Maurice Stovall continues to impress and while he isn't very quick or sudden out of his breaks he presents a huge target and has taken advantage of every opportunity he has had

Thursday Practice

Maurice Stovall really stood out once again with his ability to make plays across the middle and use his frame to shield defenders.

The Broncos need another receiver, badly. Stovall would fit in nicely there and he could learn from Rod Smith, a true professional.

Before this season started I said that Stovall million dollar talent and ten cent work ethic. I was wrong. The guy clearly puts in the time needed. And I was also extremely impressed with selflessness. Most wide recievers are prima donnas that want the ball and whine when they don't get 10 grabs a game. Stovall did his job, did it well, and when Samardzija was getting all the hype Mo didn't whine a bit.

He will have a good NFL career. He uses his body much better than most receivers coming out of college and he's excellent at plucking the ball out of the air. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he has a Keyshawn Johnson type career without all the "Meshawn" attitude.

Steelers probably won't look to take a WR with the last pick of the first round but I'd like to see him go there.

i agree Guff, Stovall handled his whole career at ND so well, even his first 3 years, which were disappointing ones.

What about 2nd round to the Bills? Pick 40. Moulds is gone. Parrish is small...so Stovall would be a nice a fit.
