I like the idea of Ndukewe playing the Apache spot. It will make the defense faster. Bruton or Herring would start at safety, Ndukewe takes Apache, Crum replaces Hoyte and Scott Smith goes to Corey Mays' spot.

Lots of speed out there.

McNeil and Walls are going to push Ferrine and Lambert out of the depth chart fast.

D Line will be a huge concern in 2007.

I gave my thoughts on offese, now for the important side of the ball.

DL-Somebody HAS to step up inside and provide some depth. I really like Kuntz. He has been very active when he's been on the field. I hope with a full year of Mendoza that he can contribute. This article hints at raiding DE to strenghten DT, but it's not like we're stacked at DE, either. The two incoming guys seem like very athletic long term projects more than guys who could fill in right away. Especially Wade. I really hope for Tuck Jr., but I doubt that emerges in 06.

The DE's have got to improve the rush from the edge. Hopefully a returning Leitko helps, but he almost seems like a Frome twin. Brown and Talley showed flashes.

Some see Abiamiri's numbers and are dissapointed. I think he's a very good DE, but his ideal role as he's gotten bigger should not be the main pass rush threat, in my opinion. I don't see a true pass rusher on the roster. But I do see guys who won't get pushed around. It's always good to be solid up front.

LB-????? Who really knows. I think everybody is in love with the idea of Duke to Apache. Crum would add some athleticism to another LB position. If that sausage comes true, who fills the third spot? I see a Thomas/Brockington battle inside. I think moreso than any other position on the defese, a lot of guys will get a lot of snaps at LB with Vernaglia finally getting some Apache reps and Borsetti getting a few licks in as well, unless a true star or two emerges that can't be kept off the field.

I will not rule out the three returning freshmen(sophs to be) to contribute. Quinn and Smith have some game experience and Washington is supposed to be very athletic.

DB-I would not be too quick to pencil in Walls. But I think he's be a contributer by year's end in at least a nickle or dime package. Another year should really help the corners. Wooden took some great strides this year. Richardson's been a warrior, but Ferrine stole some reps down the stretch. There are guys with more athleticism than Richardson that with some seasoning may be better suited in that spot.

Zibby is a playmaker. He is a gambler, though, who needs to study up on his Kenny Rogers. Sometimes it's better to "hold em" and stay at home. Did anybody else notice what a mad man Bruton was on coverage teams this season? I think he will end up the diamond in the rough of the class and will be tough to keep off the field. He's faster than Duke and more suited to a FS role, allowing Zibby to concentrate on SS. In this day and age of throwing to backs and tight ends, and running multiple WR's safeties who can both tackle and cover are vastly underrated. I really like our future here.

Bottom line..this was a young defense. It has its holes and limitations, but there are some playmakers. If the Irish have any idea of making a title run in 06, this group will need to grow up quickly.

I had to smile at this. The rest of the post was good, but let's face it...that first sentence says it all.

Yes. We know the offense will put up points. If the defense can step up even just a bit, next year could be great.

Linebacker
Fifth-Year Possibilities: None. No linebackers were recruited in 2002.

This freakin kills me. Jesus Christ. Thank god Haywood knows how to do his job.

Somebody please explain the fascination or obsession with the "lack of depth" at DL!!!!!!!!!!!!! CORNER CORNER CORNER. i am about tired of this worry about DL. It would be nice to have McCoy, but why worry about one of our strengths...Second behind corner should be LB for the Defense. When you look at the Entire team, the priorities should be something similar to the following. OL, CB, LB, RB, DL/QB, WR, S....God knows we have an overabundance of safeties. People forget about Sharpley, but he gives us a great option as backup next year. DL and WR are stocked with enough talent to suffice for next year, but RB was a worry, as we really don't have a gamebreaker or any true backups with Hoskins being injury riddled. LB is usually a strength but depth looks a lil lacking. Corner and Offensive line are in major red areas, though. When we only take two corners and people are worried about DL, I wonder what team is being followed. At DL we have backups and we have talent. DL is not complicated either. Corner, however, takes a lot of talent and is difficult to find, not to mention our serious lack of even decent depth at the CB position. We can get DL next year!!! There is no real urgency this year. But, don't get me wrong...McCoy would be SWEET!

Welcome to a new era of Notre Dame Football Recruiting: instead of waiting for them to come to us, we as coaches have decided to go and seek out the players and recruit them after selecting our favorites.

Radical.

Wave, numbers-wise, DL is very shallow. Coming into this season, only two DT's had any real experience. We are very very lucky that Laws and Landri stayed healthy. Next year, we will have 4 true DT's on the roster. Three will have played any at all. One of those three is only an undersized freshman this year. The other came in overweight and understrength and will have no true experience at the end of the season.

There are also a couple converts from DE and LB. These are not true DT's.

Landri and Laws are gone after next year. Getting DL is crucial this year.

Not to mention the in-game aspect of a deep DL. Watch an NFL game. Moreso than any position on the field, coaches like to rotate on the DL. It is the position that seems to wear down the most over the course of the game. It requires more exertion and energy than the O-line. Pass rushing takes much more energy than pass blocking and in defending the run, they are often double teamed.

Keeping your DL fresh is a great way to be prepared for an often needed defensive stand at the end of the game. I like the Miami Hurricanes style of attacking defense. And their best years are when they can send wave after wave of talented linemen into the game.

You're right. Corners were a need. And we've landed two good ones. But depth-wise, we're looking much better over the next couple years than DL.

The secondary appears to have great depth.

Offensive line has really taken shape, with Carufel still waiting to go public in a month and not taking any other visits. Young is still in the mix as well.

D Line is the area that will need major attention in 2007. Double that if they don't grab a DT (McCoy, Kates) this year. Hopefully Kuntz and Hand can step up in springtime. Their presence will be needed down the road.

Two Words......Darrell Hand! This kid was a monster in High School. Mendoza will turn this kid into a nice DT.

I'm looking forward to seeing him step up. The size and skill are there. Hopefully his freshman year has seen him gain strength for spring.

Was it Ty or Weis that grabbed him first?
