Losing McKnight, Stovall, Shelton, and Fasano would probably be the biggest loss of receiving talent and however much you like the rookies behind them they don't have the talent of these guys nor their experience. It wouldn't be reloading it would be rebuilding with the talent base that CW had to bebuild this year.

Based on the quality of teaching we're seeing out of the staff this year, I'm optimistic about that rebuilding process. For example, nobody expected this kind of year out of Smardzija. I think somebody will step up next year. It will also help to have a senior QB with a year in the system under his belt. Quinn should be able to elevate the level of play of the WR's.

The university always has to grant the 5th year so that is not "100%". If McKnight were a problem child academically, they would not grant him this. But - knock on wood - there are no problems.

As far as the NCAA, he qualifies. End of story.

An add on to my previous post -- McKnight is on schedule to graduate this December (wow). He will start work on his Masters Degree in January.

Each student is allowed no more than four seasons of competition per sport. If you were not a qualifier, you may have fewer seasons of competition available to you. You should know that NCAA rules indicate that any competition, regardless of time, during a season counts as one of your seasons of competition in that sport. It does not matter how long you were involved in a particular competition (for example, one play in a football game, one point in a volleyball match); you will be charged with one season of competition.

Can someone explain this to me?

Basically, under current NCAA bylaws, a student gets five years to complete four years of eligibility-that is if they sit out their first year. Otherwise it's straight four. Medical redshirts are an exception. If a player is injured before a certain point early in a season and misses the rest of the year(I'm not sure of the limit here, but I believe Rema qualifies) they can petition the NCAA for an extra year of eligibility.

As for Notre Dame rules- ND doesn't declare a player as a redshirt their freshman year. But if they don't play their first year, and therefore saving a year in the eyes of the NCAA, they can petition the school for that 5th overall year (4th year of eligibility) One big difference at ND is that they will not grant that extra year unless the student graduates in four years. So any 5th year seniors on ND's roster are grad students.

i read somewhere that eligibility for a medical redshirt occurs when a player is involved in less than 25% of the game that season. not sure if it's true or not.
