I just saw this on a ESPN recruiting chat...

Tom Luginbill: (4:04 PM ET ) Hello football fans and welcome. Before I start off, I would like to address the Jason Kates issue as it relates to him commiting to Notre Dame. We have credible sources and believe that he has committed to Notre Dame and we will stick to that notion for the time being. If anything changes, I can assure you we will let you know right away. We do not feel it to be necessary to change our stance at this time.

Until Kates announces, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

The Kates recruiting is about as drama filled as the 2 quarterback situation. Hopefully he comes aboard.

I hope we landed Kates? but until he publically announces, im skeptical.

also I read on the rivals ND message board that Walls will most likely be playing football in Ann Arbor.

I just don't get it. A completely overrated experience. Their coach is tired and broken down, completely outwitted by a staff with NFL experience.

I am confident Walls will choose ND, but if he goes the UM route, that would give them both Brown and Walls right out from under ND. Not good.

there are going to be guys that don't get on board the first year because they've yet to be convinced. hope kates isn't one of them, but it's going to happen.

we shouldn't hang our hopes too much on any one recruit.

They lost that game because Henne broke down, had an improbable fumble on the goal line, and got picked-off in the end-zone. Michigan had more yards on the ground and in the air, and generally moved the ball steadily against us. We played to their level (which is an accomplishment), but they truly did beat themselves. In any other universe, Michigan won that game 24-17. I would hardly say they were outwitted, as they made numerous adjustments to maintain control of the game.

Even if they choose Michigan their coach sucks! ND will still beat them due to poor coaching! If they don't want the keys to success in the NFL that CW can give them, let 'em enjoy getting pelted with water bottles every couple of years!

i've gotta disagree with you, rip. i don't buy the "they beat themselves" argument, since it is generally directly connected to the level of frustration being generated by the opposing team's offense/defense. it hardly matters that michigan had more yards on the ground and in the air - it happens all the time. (i.e. ND v. USC, 1988, when ND was clearly beaten by all stats but the score)

Not to mention the fact that, had brady quinn hit any one of a number of wide open receivers on saturday, our score may have looked drastically different as well. We had several opportunities that we failed to capitalize on, and had we done so, it may have taken the wind out of u-m's sails and changed the feel of the game. Using the "they beat themselves" logic, the same argument could be made for the Irish failing to put the game safely out of reach midway through the second quarter.

We played extremely well, made it easy to forget Michigan was a top-10 team, and have improved tremendously. But you can't rely on countless fumbles and picked-off balls in the end-zone to win games. Nine times out of ten, we would have lost that game. We are not yet dominant, and while we preserved the early lead, Michigan controlled that game.

you're right - we can't rely on on countless fumbles and interceptions in the end zone. and if that's what we need to win the game this week, i'll definitely be a little concerned with the state of our offense.

that said, fumbles and end zone interceptions are a must at some point in a season for any team to win and compete for a national championship. if you don't that sort of game where the breaks just go your way, even the best of teams are going to lose a game or two throughout the season.

It seems to me that in both the pitt and mich game we turned soft in the second half. We can't keep doing this week after week. It will eventually come back to bite us. I'm actually surprised it happened during the michigan, especially after seeing it during the pitt game. I'm sure weis is on top of it though.

Henne didn't even complete 50 percent of his passes. ND outplayed them for three quarters IMO. Our D Line dominated their O line.

Problem with the 2nd half was that Walker ran out of gas like he usually does after he has 20 carries. Hopefully over time he can gain more stamina late in the game. Weis was leading 14-3 at the half, in the Big house no less. No reason to get too aggressive in the 2nd half. If you watch Patriot ball over the years thats how they play it as well. If Walker is even half way decent in the 2nd half the game is not even close.

Seeing how walker was clearly spent in the 2nd half, it might've been a better idea to go to Powers Neal a bit more in that game.

Walker had like 95 yards in the first half, and only 10 or so in the 2nd half. Weis isn't the one running the ball.

Penn State is making a strong push for Kates. He might not announce until his season is over. No way is this in the bag. Why not just announce? He hasn't even visited, so this is not a done deal.

Landing Kates and Gerald McCoy would give ND the best DT combo in the nation for this year's recruiting class. McCoy has taken note of ND's start and of OU's start. He is also being pressured to go to OU, as he is from the state. He is keeping an open mind to this point and ND is still in the mix.

I just got a look at kates tonight in hollidaysburg PA. Mcdevitt was up 42-0 at the half.
Kates is kinda well fat. I was expecting a big kid, butt he is finch big (wildcats). He had a few TFL, but there was no chase, the running back (175lbs) just cut back into him. Also some other not so good news - Zack Frazier threw two passes that were intercepted and returned for td's tonight, he only completed one pass in the first half that was not intercepted. I know there were a lot of scouts out to see Mcoy from McDevitt. He is awesome!!! He had 5 td's in the first half of the game and around 185 yds rushing. Any chance we are in the running for this guy.
Sorry about the buzz kill but I thought a few reality minds would be interested.

I really hope its just the lack of surrounding talent for Frazer and not his personal game thats the problem.

You can tell his picture and his listed height and weight that he's a big 'un. Should they land him, he'd probably be along the Gilbert Brown/Sam Adams/Keith Traylor run stuffer DT and would be taken out in pass rush downs. However, Rueben Mendoza could whip him into shape if he redshirts his first year. Problem is, with their depth, I doubt ND can afford to do this.

I believe Frazer has an inexperience receiving corps. As for McCoy, I hear he's got ND talent but FSU grades.

Kates was at the ND-MSU game.

"I got to talk to all the coaches including Latina and Oliver. I talked with coach Oliver about everything from the Florida-Tennessee game to life, school, Notre Dame and all that stuff."

Rumor continues to swirl that Kates is very close to committing to Notre Dame. Is there any truth to the rumors?

"I don't know, I'm just up there to go watch a game and have a good time," he said. "I'm going to play every game of the season before I make a decision."
