I think Weis is the missing piece to the puzzle. This team has the talent. Offensively I think they match up with any team. Every starter from last year's team is back. I know they didn't score much last year, but I guarantee they would have if the ran a play other than the bubble screen. The shortest starting wide out is 6'2" and the teams leading rusher returns. If your going to start a defense, Abiamiri, Hoyte, Landri, and Zbikowski are a nice place to start. And the guy coaching the secondary is largely responsible for the careers of Sam Madison and Patrick Surtain.
The team hasn't had a talent problem, it's had an emotional problem. X's and O's coaching aside, the last two guys just didn't get it. Both said it was a special place, but neither embrace that ‘specialness’.
Ty is great guy and fine individual but he makes Al Gore look demonstrative. Ty took 'cool under all circumstances' too far.
‘Ty, your dog just got run over by a truck’ - Ty’s response blank stare
‘Ty, your house just got hit by lightning’ - Ty’s response blank stare
‘Ty, you just won the lottery' - Ty’s response blank stare and hold one finger in the air.
Same goes for Davie. He didn’t have ND in his heart. When he was brought on as DC, he was a hired gun. They brought in the best DC in college at the time. Didn’t matter that he didn’t fit. He came from Texas A&M, that school is the anti-ND. And when he became head coach, it was just a job to him.
Head Football Coach at the University of Notre Dame is not just job. It’s like being Pope or President only more important. That’s why I was sold on Meyer and wasn’t upset when he went to Florida. Let Florida have him. ND needs a guy that has passion for the school. Charlie is that guy. And on top of the that he’s one of the smartest football minds on the planet.
Holtz said it a constantly - You have to believe in the spirit of Notre Dame. The school has a presence. It may be the Lady on top of the Dome. It may be the school’s history. I don’t know what it is, but it’s as real the ground below us. Weis believes in that spirit and he make sure the team believes. Greatness is about to happen.
- Clipped from article in Atlanta Journal Constitution, full link below. The article is more of the same about Weis. But the last line of the clipping is worth reading.
South Bend, Ind. — The first thing you notice about Charlie Weis is not only is he evolving into the next Rockne, Leahy, Parseghian and Holtz before the Fighting Irish’s eyes, but nobody fibbed about his unyielding ways. Once football camp starts, he becomes more rigid than one of these legendary statues around the Notre Dame campus.
Weis does smile, though. It’s just that they are quick ones. They appear only long enough for this pleasantly cocky coach in his first season with the Irish to make a point. For instance: When the subject is Notre Dame’s slide toward mediocrity, accelerated by the underwhelming coaching and recruiting of Bob Davie and Tyrone Willingham, Weis’ point is along the lines of, “Believe me, pal. I know something that you don’t, but keep watching. Greatness is about to happen.”
