Jasper's Schmidt picks ND
By BOB WIENEKE

For the past few weeks, Jasper, Ind., fullback Luke Schmidt has known his college choice.
Once he made the decision, Schmidt told his family members following a Sunday night dinner, and he later informed his high school coach.
And that was it.
"People were asking," Schmidt said, "and I was just like, 'Sorry, I can't tell you.' "
Friday he did, and the answer is Notre Dame, the school he chose over Purdue and Michigan.
Per NCAA recruiting rules, ND coach Charlie Weis cannot publicly comment on a recruit until the player signs a national letter-of-intent. The first day players can sign is Feb. 1, 2006.
Schmidt became the seventh prep prospect to commit to Notre Dame's recruiting class of 2006.
Schmidt also becomes the second high-profile Indiana prep player to commit to the Irish, joining Merrillville running back James Aldridge. For Schmidt, choosing Notre Dame may not have been the case a year ago.
"Actually I think it probably would have been (different)," Schmidt said. "If coach Weis wasn't there, I don't know if I would have chosen Notre Dame."
Recruiting analyst Tom Lemming rates Schmidt as a five-star player, his highest ranking. Normally not a proponent of early commitments, Lemming cites this year as an exception, considering all seven players who have committed to ND are either four- or five-star quality.
"You can't argue with them taking early guys," Lemming said. "As far as starts, this is their best ever."
The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Schmidt ran for 41 touchdowns and close to 2,500 yards as a junior. Schmidt said the Irish coaches have said they plan to use him as an H-back, a combination fullback/tight end.
"He might be the best fullback prospect in the country," Lemming said. "He's a bulldozer-type of a guy."
And now, Schmidt is planning to bulldoze other prospects. After making his announcement to a group of close to 60 people Friday afternoon at the high school, Schmidt headed home to e-mail some of his future teammates.
Considering that six of the seven commitments could end up on the offensive side although none of them are offensive linemen, Schmidt was going to begin his sales pitch to blockers.
"Yeah," Schmidt said, "once I find out who they're going after, I'm sure I'll be all over that."
