Surprize Offer

Notre Dame offered QB Tyler Lyon. I haven't heard anything about this kid, not really listed as high as some other QB's. Pretty strange considering ND hasn't offered some highly touted QB's like Tebow, and Hartline yet. Weis must really see something in this kid. I bet alot of schools start to take interest in him now, because Weis has offered him so early. Even Lyon was surprised about the offer.

3/26/2005 - By Cary Osborne

Hart High junior Tyler Lyon has received a scholarship offer from the University of Notre Dame to play quarterback for the storied program.

Lyon, who threw for 3,108 yards and 27 touchdowns to 20 interceptions, and had a 59 percent completion percentage in 2004, received the offer from new Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis on Thursday.

“(Weis) said. ‘We have a spot on our roster for you,’ and offered a scholarship,” Lyon said. “I was pretty surprised talking to Charlie Weis and surprised they (offered a scholarship). It’s pretty cool you know.”

Lyon said a Fighting Irish assistant coach made the initial contact to Hart football head coach Mike Herrington on Tuesday.

“It was kind of out of the clear blue,” Herrington said. “You don’t think a school like that would give an offer right away. They see the potential of a 6-6 guy that can throw and run well.”

Lyon then called Notre Dame back on Thursday.

The All-Foothill League second teamer, who led Hart to a 7-5 record last season, also received a scholarship offer from the University of Arizona in February.

Although he could verbally commit, but not sign with a university until the signing period begins for seniors in February, Lyon said a decision on what he will do is not imminent.

“I have no idea yet,” Lyon said. “I don’t know where I’m going to go. I’ll see how the rest of my high school career goes and I’ll go from there.” Complicating the situation for the 6-foot-6, 215-pounder is interest from schools wanting him to play baseball. Already this month, Lyon said, he’s received contact from USC, UCLA, UC-Santa Barbara and Santa Clara.

“It’s all up in the air right now. I don’t know what school or what sport I’ll be playing.”

Lyon, a pitcher on the Indians’ varsity baseball squad showed much promise in last year’s Valley Invitational Baseball League championship team and into 2005.

In his sophomore year, Lyon was a spot starter, throwing in nine games, compiling a 4-2 record with a 4.81 ERA.

Coming into this season, the right-hander was a favorite for the No. 2 spot in the Indians’ rotation.

In his second game of the year, on March 8 against Dos Pueblos, Lyon left in the second inning after throwing a fastball and feeling a pop in his throwing arm.

“It was pretty scary when it happened,” Lyon said. “I thought it was a one-time thing, but it kept hurting. It was kind of scary.”

It was found out days later after an MRI that Lyon had strained a ligament in his elbow.

He is out for the season.

Lyon has already gone through a couple of weeks of physical therapy and said there is no pain.

He will receive a second MRI next week.

Lyon will be ready for football season, though, he said.

“(The injury) shouldn’t affect football,” Lyon said. “I should be ready for summer.”

He admitted, the Notre Dame offer has excited him going into his senior year.

Hart has had six consecutive quarterbacks receive scholarships to Division I colleges, beginning with David Neill to Nevada in 1998. Lyon would be the seventh.

Herrington said, of all those quarterbacks, Lyon has had the earliest interest.

“I don’t think we’ve had a quarterback receive early attention like this,” Herrington said. “(Current Baltimore Raven and former Cal-Berkeley quarterback) Kyle Boller got his first offer in May, but not this early at the end of March.”

Very odd choice; a second-teamer on a regional team with surgeries. Cutcliffe and Weis must really see something in him to equate him with Frazer and Jones. Have we offered any other quarterbacks beyond those three?

Nope, just 3 so far. I'm surprized we haven't offered Tebow yet, he has the grades and has shown interest in ND.

ND should be giving scholarship offers to the best defensive backs that are out there as opposed to having a logjam of quarterbacks with offers in hand. Clearly, this is a need that can no longer be ignored. What about the o-line to protect these QBs? And receivers for them to throw to?

i agree, QBs get all the news but what ND really needs is some big OL and Secondary recruits.

i've got a sneaking suspicion that C-Dub has those bases covered as well. i think he's probably offering to higher profile positions right now primarily because he wants them, but also because of the general exposure that he'll get from doing so. ND isn't traditionally in the habit of offering early. the fact that weis is doing so draws attention from the media, and weis is aware of that. it's a good sign IMO...

ND offered another QB, Mitch Mustain. Weis is determined to land a big time QB....

Between the QBs who have recieved an offer from ND is there a consensus Number 1 in terms of all around talent amongst them?

Zach Frazer was named the number 1 QB on Emfinger. Frazer, Jones, Tebow(No Offer yet), are all legit 5 star players. Lyon, looks like he'll be a 3 star guy, but Weis must see something special in him too offer this early. Mustain looks like he'll be a 4 star guy.

Frazer is the best passer, very strong accurate arm according to reports, but Demetruis is a dual threat QB, who is drawing comparisons to Donovan McNabb.

My personel favorite is Jones, but I'd be very thrilled to have Frazer. Tebow looks amazing, but I don't see him coming to ND.

This is pretty interesting. I'm sure Charlie see's something in the kid to offer him this early. And it could always be that one of his priorities is to add depth to the position. I mean, a non-scholarship player was still the primary back-up last season if I remember right, and the 2 QB's he got this year, one is a recruit from the past regime that apparently got his knee scoped, and the other is a non-scholarship player. He's probably just covering his bases. Plus its always good to have competition, especially at a position like QB. Even if the Irish get a 5 star guy like Frazer, you probably don't want him coming in as a freshman thinking he's got the job in his back pocket as soon at Quinn graduates. You want him to have to work for it against at least some moderate competition.

And I wouldn't worry about the other positions too much. It doesn't seem like many other schools are throwing scholarships around at them either. Gotta wait and see what's what w/ all that. I'm sure Weis has got a plan and got it handled (and if not I'll be bitching and moaning come signing day, as will we all:) But for now, im Charlie I trust.

Jones could be the best QB to come out of Chicago in a long time. I think the McNabb comparisions might be a bit unfair. Jones goes to Morgan Park, McNabb went to Mt. Carmel. They're from the same area and play the same position. That's about it. Jones will need strength and conditioning for sure. Needs to get bigger.

Ron Powlus' ties to PA could be a recruiting tool of value for Frazer.
