After doing a lot of research I just made a reservation to stay at the dorms on campus. We will be staying in St. Edward's Hall. I think my girls will love staying on campus and I feel a lot safer. It is only $35 per night, you can't beat that! I am going to bring my bike and go cycling while the girls are in camp, probably spend some time just relaxing and reading. I plan on taking the girls to the Basilica and Grotto every evening.
If anyone can think of any "must do's" please post them here. I will be going on a hunt for Rockne's grave.
I believe they buried Rockne in Kansas, didn't they? I saw the memorial once on I-35. If they buried him in South Bend it is probably at the cemetery across from the cathedral on main street, midway between Ireland and Jefferson (I believe, I'm getting rusty on my SBI geography).
CFHF is pretty darn lame. Tippacanoe would be great for lunch one day, and Club LaSalle is a swanky restaraunt if you want to blow some cash. Both of those places should involve getting dressed-up. Club LaSalle would probably insist on a tie. I think there should be a Studebaker museum by now, and you should check to see what weekend the East Race is. If that is going on, you should head down to the Mighty Saint Joe for a peek. There could be a minor-league baseball game if you care. There is one day of the week each month where they end the game with a huge fireworks display.
Indianapolis is a nice city, but Chicago is probably more worth-while. You could even take the South Shore from the airport and avoid driving all together. The South Shore would drop you off on the south end of downtown, by the Art Institute. You will never despise driving more than you will after the route from South Bend to Indy. Detroit is actually quite close as well.
I would still recommend the Warren Dunes.
