In late July my daughters are going to be going to soccer camp at ND. They will only be going to the day camp so I need to stay somewhere within an hour of campus because I will need to drop them off and pick them up every day. I was kind of hoping to make this a little vacation too. I found a little resort in Chesterton, IN which would give us nice access to the Indiana Dunes. Any other ideas?

NOT THE INDIANA DUNES. Trust me, there is nothing beautiful or scenic or anything about the Indiana Dunes. You'll get a nice view of the Bethelham Steel smokestacks while sitting on the beach next to a guy in combat boots and cut-off jean-shorts.

The Warren Dunes in Michigan are far more beautiful, as are the towns along the eastern shoreline of Lake michigan, and they are no further (though the drive is more elaborate). To get there you would take 31 North to Buchanan Road, head west along Warren Woods Road after Buchanan. You'll pass the Warren State Park and anything along that stretch of beach should be decent.

After doing a lot of research I just made a reservation to stay at the dorms on campus. We will be staying in St. Edward's Hall. I think my girls will love staying on campus and I feel a lot safer. It is only $35 per night, you can't beat that! I am going to bring my bike and go cycling while the girls are in camp, probably spend some time just relaxing and reading. I plan on taking the girls to the Basilica and Grotto every evening.

If anyone can think of any "must do's" please post them here. I will be going on a hunt for Rockne's grave.

I believe they buried Rockne in Kansas, didn't they? I saw the memorial once on I-35. If they buried him in South Bend it is probably at the cemetery across from the cathedral on main street, midway between Ireland and Jefferson (I believe, I'm getting rusty on my SBI geography).

CFHF is pretty darn lame. Tippacanoe would be great for lunch one day, and Club LaSalle is a swanky restaraunt if you want to blow some cash. Both of those places should involve getting dressed-up. Club LaSalle would probably insist on a tie. I think there should be a Studebaker museum by now, and you should check to see what weekend the East Race is. If that is going on, you should head down to the Mighty Saint Joe for a peek. There could be a minor-league baseball game if you care. There is one day of the week each month where they end the game with a huge fireworks display.

Indianapolis is a nice city, but Chicago is probably more worth-while. You could even take the South Shore from the airport and avoid driving all together. The South Shore would drop you off on the south end of downtown, by the Art Institute. You will never despise driving more than you will after the route from South Bend to Indy. Detroit is actually quite close as well.

I would still recommend the Warren Dunes.

Most of the time when I go to games I stay in Chicago and take the South Shore to South Bend and back. I used to live in Ohio and Michigan so I have seen enough of the big cities there. I am driving up from Florida so I will be going through Indianapolis. The Dunes are a must for me but I doubt I will be dressing up at all since I am taking my daughters of 8 yo, 11yo and her 11yo friend. They may also enjoy a minor league game.

Thanks for all your input, it will really help.
