Future of the Big East

The new Big East is outstanding. I just wonder how long we can hold it together.

I am in the clear minority, but I like the all-Catholic school league should it ever come to that. Obviously the competition would diminish, but just schedule tough non-conference games and be done with it.

beyond boston college, gonzaga, santa clara, and u of san diego, who else would be involved? do jesuit schools count? that league would be stacked in women's soccer.

WHo else? Well i know of many Catholic Schools who could be in Div. IA but need to set up some teams (any teams football, Bball, etc) because they r new schools. Of course Jesuit schools count unless the Jesuits left the Catholic church :krazy:

For bball, there's Creighton and St. Joe's that have some national rep.

Well, I was thinking the 8 Catholic schools of the Big East and 2-4 from the Atlantic 10. The only other D1 Catholic schools that are not Big East or Big West (that I know of) are Xavier, Dayton, Duquesne, St. Joe, LaSalle, St. Bonaventure, Crieghton, Loyola, Detroit, St. Louis, Fordham, and Holy Cross. I would take Xavier and St. Louis.

Yes, for the purpose of this exercise, I guess Jesuit schools will count.

just like BC has its a$$hole fans, so does ND (nayers).

Im a fan of sports and am extremely passionate about my school. I also enjoy a great rivalry (its not too often you find two outstanding religious schools that have great sports programs).. I just registered and decided to post cuz i saw a fellow member of a mustang messageboard with a link to here.

Dont classify all BC fans as obnoxious a$$holes... I certainly wouldnt put you all in the same boat as people like the afore mentioned.

on edit.. apparently the person i found the link from is the adminstrator of the forum..

Are they working on new chants other than "1918" for the 2005 season when Boston comes to town?

I'm sure the Bronx faithful will not be at a loss for words.

Wow...great pic. Brought a much-needed smile to my face.

As for the Yanks-Sox, all I can say is that they're lucky the O's have an idiot running the team (in terms of baseball between the lines). If Angelos spent more time building his pitching staff, and less time complaining about The Nats, they could actually compete for the Division crwon. They have arguably one of the best offenses in the AL...complimenting that offense with some solid arms would have gone a long way towards making them legitimate contenders.

the orioles are basically cursed by being in the AL east. if current economic trends continue, the bosox' and yankees' payrolls will continue to spiral out of control, and the jays, rays, and orioles will be pretty helpless to catch up. baltimore needed starting pitching this offseason WAY more than they needed sammy sosa, who is well past his prime and not worth his salary. in the meantime, both boston and new york concentrated on pitching - pedro was asking too much, while clement has great stuff and wade miller was the steal of the offseason at $1.5 million... i think boston takes the division this year. new york is good, but they're not getting any younger...

All good stuff in here. Sammy Sosa might be the most selfish athlete every to breathe. He'll wear his welcome out quickly, especially if he doesn't produce.

Clement got ZERO run support in 04 from the Cubs. I doubt he'll have this problem in Boston. Out of the 25 guys on Boston's team, 23 were on the same page. Nomar and Pedro had their own agendas. Both are now gone. Derrick Lowe's value got far too high because of his postseason. He wasn't worth the money he was asking.

The Yankees will hit, granted they aren't getting any younger. We'll see how Pavano does after a contract year and a league switch. He's the key for NY.

And no matter what happens, I still hate Boston College.

As much as I hate to say this, I don't see this is as the year the Yanks finally don't win the AL East. I think both the Yankees and Boston could win 100 games this year, but the Yanks will edge them out just b/c they always beat up on their lesser competition. Boston sometimes forgets to come to play when its not the Yanks they're up against (they lost the season series vs. the Devil Rays this season) That has to stop if they want to win the division. We'll see I guess. I think if they meet again in the postseason though, the Sox have as good a chance as last year to win it again I'd say.

the bosox yanks rivalry is just going to get bigger and bigger over the next few years. its going to be excited.. i agree the Os have some serios potential, but theres no way they can surpass the two powerhouses up top.

Im confident the yanks are going to run the table this year. We picked up some strong pitching, an area we all know caused us the championship last year.

I think I finally see why the yanks are hated so much around baseball.. the sox are hoping on board too. Its like two all-star teams battling it out.

:offtopic: I know I was off topic too, but I've been wanting to use that smiley for a minute now.

Anyways, In terms of the Big East, I'd be interested to see what BCE thinks of going to the ACC next season?

I can tell you that the "buzz" down here has been less than positive. Most folks seemed to be more into West Virginia possibly joining the conference, but they understand that B.C. is better for the ACC in business terms.

yea people say "this school and that school" should be going instead of us.. we beat most of them though, including WV. The biggest factor i hear was the academics. BC is going to do a good job of keeping their academic reputation fairly stellar. Im a huge advocate for academics before sports.
A team that is just a bunch of goons can be put together anywhere. Finding top notch athletes (like those at Notre Dame and Boston College), that have to keep academics a top priority is something thats fading fast throughout the country. Most likely the reason our schools arent seeing very many high profile recruits lately. Why would a kid who was pushed threw high school wanna start busting his ass to earn a degree when he knows he will be going pro at the end of a few years? Im glad the NCAA is supposively enforcing stricter academic requirements this coming year.

As far as a good business move, its questionable. You dont see too many BC jersies being worn anywhere other than Alumi Stadium. Were all hoping this move can give us some more hype, or ATLEAST some due media attention. If you followed our basketball program this year you can see how much of a joke it was. 2 scheduled ESPN games, and a third picked up on option later on. Thats pretty pathetic.

BC is by no means a powerhouse in any sport. Hockey, maybe. The basketball program is young, but up-and-coming. The football program is hungry, but somewhat meek at this point. I think being well rounded and being able to compete in ALL of our sports programs gives us the goods to be part of the ACC. All in all, it will be the best move for us. When we were so-so in the big east, we got little attention. When we were great, we got negative attention- "BC is thriving in a thinned out, lesser Big East conference." Even if we get waxed by every ACC team next year, atleast well be playing with the big boys, and hopefully will get some credit for that.

The ACC is becoming the Bill Gates of college athletics. They are single handedly changed the landscape of the NCAA by raiding the Big East. The domino effect is going to be quite serious and could have an impact on ND athletics....including football.

the big east basketball conference will be sick next year. The BC b ball team is a fluke, coach skinner will be scooped up by a bigger program soon, and BC will struggle again.

In football the big east will stink next year. Pitt is a solid team, tyler palko looks like a real good QB, louisville should be good. Uconn is up and coming. Rutgers still stinks. Losing BC really hurt.
