I attented the USA coaches clinic in Las Vegas over the weekend, and was shocked and surprised they had added Charlie Weis to the schedule. Of all the head coaches who spoke at that clinic (Sylvester Croom, Bill Callahan, Bobby Petrino, Frank Solich, Barry Alvarez, George O'Leary, Art Briles, Karl Dorrell)Weis was the most convincing, and confident of the bunch. While others used power point presentations, overheads, and slides; Charlie used none of it. This guy knows what is going on. Here are some key points he spoke about.
3 Things you need to be a good coach.

1. Tell the truth no matter the consequences
2. Don't be the players friend
3. Coaching is Teaching

* He would recruit every top player in the country no matter where they live
* He told Bill Callahan in front of everyone they were going to be competing for the same kids "Hey Bill we're competing" was his quote. He also told the guy asking the recruiting question he had some big balls for wearing a Woodson jersey before Callahan was about to speak. Huge laughter!!
* A coach from Hawaii asked him how he could get Notre Dame to recruit some of his big polynesians. His Response was 574 631-7455 (Or something like that), which he then said "Sorry Bill" with a big smile. Huge Laughter!!
* Without Mentioning Nelson's name he told a story of a kid he was recruiting who told him "If you lose to pittsburgh in the AFC championship and come visit me I will sign with ND" His response..."Kiss my a**, I don't lose for anybody", he then said the marriage had irreconsolible differences at that point and needless to say he never contacted the kid again.
* He won't recruit anyone who doesn't want to play and compete right away
* He told the fastest kid on the team at ND, he would have to be prepared to play both ways.
* He spoke about his work schedule with New England 5:30 AM to Midnight
* He said the most difficult year he had in coaching was when he almost died from the surgery. The doctor said you'll be out 3 months, 3 days later he was back at work. He said he felt like if he was healthy the patriots would have won another world title
* I asked him about having to develop a young QB. His response.. "We don't have a young QB at ND, that's just a built in excuse"
* Person asked about scheduling and his influence. He said the pretty much were locked into the schedule til 07 but he would have say after that. he also said it is what it is "We're not ducking anyone". Great Quote
* Someone asked "Is there a game next year you are looking forward to?" His response... "Pittsburgh, Did you notice how he tried to bait me into the USC answer." Huge Laughs!!!
* He said the one possible excuse you have for losing is if the team is just more talented than you. You should never lose because you are unprepared for an opponent.
* He also said he was going to rip the S.I.D a new one because they were telling everyone about the state of ND football and using his name along with it. He said he is plenty capable of speaking for the sate of ND football.

Overall, his speech recharged my batteries to become a better coach and person. I am 100% confident in this man's knowledge and plan for ND football. I know he will get the Irish back on top of the college football world.

There is a lot more information I can give those were just a few of the highlights.

I'm optimistic too... but for the love of Mike, tone it down, peepz! The way some people on here are working themselves up is a bit odd, considering that so far, C-Dub has coached exactly 0 games at Notre Dame. All he's done so far is talk, and Ty did that too... remember his "You should've hired me first" comment to Kevin White?

There are still way too many question marks... our secondary, our pass rushing, a college squad learning a pro-style offense, our receiving corps, Brady Quinn himself, the fact that Weis has never been a head coach. Even Darius Walker showed some timidity at times this year, so I don't even consider him to be a sure thing. And then there's the phantom menace of injuries.

Build up your expectations if you must, but the higher you build 'em, the further you might fall.

hmmmmm.........i think we are building up our expectations because weis has won 3 superbowls, been a winner everywhere hes been, works 4 times harder than ty, is a stern disciplinarian, and overall BELEIVES in the program and loves notre dame. im not expecting to go 10-1 or 9-2, but if he wins 7 or 8 games i will be happy. and if i see change in the teams attitude, rather than last years, i will be happy. if we actually make adjustmentsat half time i will be happy. if we pass the ball on 3rd and 7 instead of a dive up the 3 hole i will be happy. if we beat teams that we can beat and not act like they are the second coming of john elway (palko) i will be happy. if we gain more than 11 rushing yards (byu) i will be happy. if we beat teams that we have a sizeable lead over and not let "a slow grind " (willingham) turn into an embarrassment, i will be happy. if we lose to usc this year ,(IF), by less than 31 freakin points i will be happy. i dont think this is too much weis and his staff cant handle. hes a born winner. all i want to see is improvement, not what the team has been like in the last 2 years.

I just want this team to be competitive again, be in every game. NO BLOWOUTS! It will be interesting to see the results fom the ND syracuse game. When we played cuse two years ago they freakin crushed us, you won't see Weis lose to a no talent team like that this season.

Getting blown out at home against Purdue, losing to BYU, losing to BC the last 4 years, this is all inexcuseable and will not happen any more....

I've read that the ND players already love the workouts Weis has installed, they said there much tougher then before....

This is not directed at you,Texan. I understand what you're trying to say but I don't think anyone should be "happy" with a loss. And I think that’s one of things Weis is trying to stress. ND fans have been become content with mediocrity. If you’re happy with getting beat by less than 31, then you get beat by 30. The team, the students, and fans are in need of an attitude adjustment. We, as fans, should expect to win and win in ND fashion - with class and real student-athletes. Years of average football have lead to some ND fans believing the naysayers. The schedule’s too tough, the standards too high, kids don’t want to go to the school blah, blah blah. Weis doesn’t believe them and neither should we. I may be setting myself up for failure here, but I believe ND is going to shock people this year. I’m not by any means predicting a national title, but this team will compete and will win. A BCS bid would not surprise me.

im not saying we will get beat by usc, i said IF we do, i would rather lose by anything less than 31. i think IF we lose to usc this year it will be by a very narrow margin, and in my own opinion, i think we will edge them out and win because we have them at home this year. their golden boy (chow) is also gone. i agree 100% with you that we as nd fans have gotten use to average football too much, and i agree weis will surprise us next year. i think we will see some awesome things out of the offense, unlike the last 2 seasons. i would love to go to a bcs bowl, but im not predicting it because if we dont, i dont want to be mad. that being said, there is also half of me that thinks we will go to a bcs game because weis is great offensively. i think the only thing keeping nd from a bcs bowl is how quick the offense can pick up his system. in my opinion the talent is there for weis to compete offensively. (although espn will disagree with me) the only thing i am reserve about is the defensive secondary. i think they have been poorly coached to this point and will need much improvement. if they can step up and make some plays then we can hang with anyone next year. now say all these things fall into place for the irish. next year will be one to remember and recruiting will be outstanding.

I really don't care what bowl game we go to this year as long as we win!!! It's so frustrating to see that streak continue year after year. I hope we win 8 or 9 games this year, but I hope for a bowl win more than anything else.

A few points:
I think that in the case of the USC game, there is such a thing as a "moral victory". This is almost without a doubt the best squad in the game. I want a victory...but say if we lose by 3-7 points, I think that speaks very well to the state of the program.

As for a Bowl game, I won't be satisfied with just getting to a "punk" bowl (insight.com I'm talking to you). I hope we get to a decent bowl game...and nshope, If we do manage a 9 win campaign...we're guaranteed a great bowl game, bro.

Coach Weis is all about attitude and execution. If all of the players have his attitude and execute his playbook we are going to surprise the entire nation this fall.
