Nice restaraunts in South Bend (this will be a short list)

The Carriage House (way out there)
The Sorin Room (on campus)

Those are all top-tier joints. Anybody else know any other places they like?

i've never been to south bend, if anyonyone can tell me how it really is i'd be greatly appreciative. I know ESPN knocks it as a dead cold town, but i'm really interested in visiting it soon, how is south bend?

South Bend - i dont know i just went to ND i would be willing were i a player to suffer through the winter just for the beauty of the school...i mean in the East there is nothing like it (now of course West Texas has more beauty) yes i like the ND campus - but i wouldnt mind if they moved it somewhere here in Texas (probably easier to get candidates for coaching, easier to recruit, etc) but u have to go to the ND campus - then u are really anxious for ND to win

Lol but one problem for ND is the cold but Weis is proving he can get around it - if u ever go up and love the cold u will never come back - it is so pretty

man, it got down to about 40 degrees in october my freshman year and i thought "it an't get any colder than this." it was literally the coldest weather i'd ever felt. then after christmas break in january it was 10 degrees with a sub-zero wind chill and a blizzard. i think i almost died.

that's why i moved right back to southern california afterwards. the winter was OK for a few years, but i like it sunny and 75 on christmas.

The wedding, and graduation dinner were in the same place, no? I get those Italian restaurants mixed up, but I think that was Parisi's. There is also Fazoli's and Mancino's in town, and...of course...Ciao's (the good one-which is now downtown).

I believe Boracho Burrito closed. Was Taqueria Tijuana the one on Michigan south of downtown? Did you actually eat there? Damn.

Others that come to mind as fun places: Mr. Moo's, Moo's Udder Place, and-my favorite-Ski's biker bar (GREAT goulash). Of course, I really did like BW-3 too. Also, there was the $5.00 Korean buffet place downtown, and-for the lamesters-Nick's Patio.

Ooooh yeaaaah! Who could forget the Silver Tower Seafood House! Actually, it was not a bad restaraunt. Nothing special, but acceptable, and I suspect you will NEVER see a student there. Most ND kids just snicker as they drive by that place, being that it doesn't jive with their suburban sensibilities of mass-production and commerical sterility.

One more: Frankie's Babecue south of campus. Great barbecued ribs, pork, chicken and such. I never actually went into Mo' Better Ribs, but the_voidoid and I do know people that ate there.

Now I'm nostalgic: Grabbing a styrofoam container of ribs from Frankies, parking behind the post office next to the main circle (it was easier then getting one of those stupid stickers for those far-ass-away lots), and stopping by the old Knights of Columbus building to watch some cable television before class. Oh, now that takes me back to the undergraduate days...

Everything else I can think of (the 10 wildcards):

10.) The Oaken Bucket, supposedly the 'best hamburger in South Bend.'

9.) Moondogs Pub, which is open on Sunday nights for karaoke and can serve booze because it is a pub. Great place to stop on the way back from the 4H Country Fairgrounds, after watching the Monster Trucks.

8.) The Emporium in South Bend and Doc Pierce's in Mishawaka. Same owners, and same food, but fun atmospheres.

7.) Victory Bar. Oh, hell, even I won't go into the Victory Bar.

6.) In Mishawka both Jerry's and Pat's are nice little bars for something quiet and removed.

5.) Mishawaka Brewing Company. Is the microbrew phenomenon over yet?

4.) The dueling pianos bar in Mishawaka with 25 cent well drinks will get you blitzed.

3.) The Colonial Pancake House. For four years I had brunch there every Sunday!

2.) POLITOS! Fun restaraunt in a strip mall on Grape Road.

Yeah, Macri's is good, and there are two of them. Nice, cheap, quick, and clean. Their downtown location is nice.

Also, Tippacanoe is the old Studebaker mansion and a fine restaraunt. Good call. What did they turn the old Oliver mansion into? I forgot.

no, it's not wolfie's. wolfies was right between turtle creek and campus view. julio's pizza, fried chicken and ribs was WAY south, probably two miles south of downtown near the rally's.

Rally's was west, toward the airport, unless there was another one down by Ireland Road. I just don't remember Julio's.

Yet another fun one: Vesuvio's downtown pizzeria. There was a big burly black man making east-coast style Italian pizza in this total hole-in-the-wall next to the State, and it was great, but the Man was hassling him because he wanted to be open late to draw the drunk-munch hip-hoppers from the State, the Heartland, and that other dance-club above BW-3. And across the street from him was a very pleasant Cambodian take-out joint, and there was also that nice Thai restaraunt downtown.

Also, who could forget Higher Grounds, the hippie coffee house downtown with live highschool rock bands? What was the name of that band from South Bend that got their start there? The radio told me one of their songs was a hit...

I actually own a 'Between the Buns' t-shirt. It says: "My Favorite Place to be in South Bend is Between the Buns." Unfortunately, I have to say, I think the food there is terrible. I just never liked that place. Next door to it, however, is K's hotdogs. You can buy boxes of hotdogs with any number of toppings. Now that's a place I did enjoy.

Thanks Rip. Have no idea what the old Oliver mansion was turned into. Macri's is good for all of the reasons stated (esp. if Fr. Poorman was buying... ;>)

CJ's WAS great for a 'greasy spoon' burger, waffle fries and beer by the plastic solo cups. But I guess it's gone, as the Gateway building collapsed on it.

The Fiddler's Hearth is a real nice place - has authentic Irish Pub atomsphere and food. Good food - good beer. I get to one game a year and I consider it a must

There was one place I went to in nearby Mishawaka and I think the name was
Pat's Pub. It had really good food, cold beer, and they played the fight song ever so often.

did anybody eat at club 23 during the brief period where mo re-opened the kitchen a couple years ago? is the kitchen still open there at all? he served lebanese food (obviously). there was also a GREAT lebanese place on 31 just north of campus run by mo's friend george, but i'm not sure it's still in business.

Also, the Oliver Mansion is part of the Center for History, IIRC.

Food wise, I'm partial to the burgers at the View (Parkview). And has nobody mentioned Fat's yet?! Maybe not what you'd call 'good' or anything...

There's also Main Street Grill in Mishawaka, right next to Doc Pierce's. A bit more expensive than their neighbor.

Please, to strangers it remains 'The White House Cafe.' Now, across the street from that was supposed to be a good restaraunt, but I don't remember.

Also, what was the name of that dance club down by the tuxedo rental place that looked like it used to be a strip club? The Inferno? Did they serve food?

And nobody mentioned the ala carte line at the grocery store either. Nor Honkers. Those were two of my favorites while living in the SBI.

Oh, and there was the Gipper Lounge (or whatever it was called) on Michigan Avenue in Roseland, and a pleasant little diner right up in the same area by that lumber yard and the Taco Bell.
