Pull up a chair & your favorite beverage of choice and talk about anything here. Baseball, Boxing, the WNBA...ok, maybe not everything. :)

I'll start it with this question:
Is Carlos Beltran (or any baseball player) worth $100 Million?

Personally I'd rather have Andruw Jones than Beltran. Comparable batting numbers, probably a better defensive player...and a cheaper price tag.

yes he is worth it for 2 reasons

1) someone is willing to pay him that much money

2) you and i are still willing to pay for tickets to watch him play

Didn't he hit like .267 last year. As a Mets fan I think 100 Mil is way to much. We could sign Delgado and Mags Ordonez for that 100 mil. But its the Mets so they'll sign Beltran and they'll get screwed, because thats what the Mets do best.

Good points, but I still think a guy like Andruw Jones or Jim Edmonds is a better value pick-up.

But free-agent salaries are crazy these days. I was having a talk with my dad the other day & he was like, "If guys like Beltran are getting 100 Mil, then how much would guys like Mays, Mantle & Aaron make on today's free-agent market?". Those guys could fetch a cool $2 million dollar-deal easy.

I'm a yankee fan first off. second off the mets are in need of a star player because the yankess are drawing 4 million a year while the mets are drawing 2 mill.

The mets are starting up there own TV network like the yanks have had (YES network here in the tri state area) and they need star players, Omar minaya the mets GM has made it clear he only wants hispanic players, which has caused alot of problems here racially in the papers and the radio. I could care less cause I;m a yank fan , but met fans are starting to question Omar.

Queens is the most Diverse city in the U.S , but still, I think Omar should be going after the best players, regardless of race. Media especially the times has had a field day with this.

Agreed. Its not black, white, hispanic, or asian. You get guys who will help you win. Who cares what race or color you are. And I hate to tell Omar but the Mets are the second team in NYC and always will be, but thats no excuse for losing.

At some point this salary inflation issue in baseball will come to the same problem the NHL is in. In that case, it was the owners' fault for paying those guys more then they could muster, but it was also the players' fault for being spoiled snots.

Likewise, I really could care less about baseball, in part because the finances are dangerous outside of cities like New York. Everybody else has to blow their load on a team to win a title, and then they suck for a decade afterward. Whatever happened to the Marlins?

I like the NFL's salary regulations, frankly. Its a well-run sport.

Well just a suggetion but maybe College FB could just forgo the regular season and play a 128 team tournament (of course we will have to add the additional teams) and have the losers in the tournament then start playing a regular season...i know it would get rid of alot of tradition but i thought maybe we could discuss this although this is not the best fix for College FB

Are you kidding? Most Mets fans LOVE Minaya so far. I'm in a VERY small minority of Mets fans I know that haven't jumped on his bandwagon yet (but then again, I want him to slash salaries and start rebuilding, all the while knowing that means he's gonna put a terrible product on the field for 2-3 years, but hey, that's just me). And I don't think he ONLY wants hispanic players, its just Minaya feels he has an in w/ hispanics b/c he is one. You know, kinda like we all thought Willingham'd have an in w/ black players (and we all know how that turned out). Although, unlike Willingham, Minaya can actually outbid everybody else if he wants to so it might actually work out for him. Anyway though, if there were any start caliber white or black players in free agency this year, I'm sure he'd go after them. There really aren't this year though. Other than Martinez and Beltran, there's no big stars in free agency this season. A lot of very nice players like Pavano, Lowe, J.D. Drew, etc, but no big star caliber guys other than those two I think. And he & the Mets want stars to put on that tv network they're making in a year or so, so I think that's why he went after those guys so hard.

Wow...that is either the craziest thing I've ever heard...or the most brilliant.

Wow. :)

And Aerosmith, you can have JD Drew. We gave up The Sheff, & that's all we got? He finally produced because he saw that free-agent payday comin' through...but he was never a "true" Brave.

I think Minaya is a great GM did a great job with the expos, but from what I've seen he has only looked at hispanic players, plus he just traded vance wilson away for some no name hispanic player, Mets need Vance he's a very good defensive catcher, Piazza will only catch maybe 100 to 115 games.

Its not just my opinion, people are rumbling about it in the papers and on the radio. He has this perception that hispanic players will want to go play for the Mets because theres alot of hispanic players on the team. I really don't think that matters to these guys, they just wanna go to the team that pays them the most. All players care about these days is money, they could care less about the ethncity of there teammates.
