He is not really a tiger, he is actually part of the lemur family.

I have inside info, he is not a tiger, but a liger. My guess is that he out for the year, which is no big deal, since he made more in the time I made this drunken post than I will make this year.

a liger. it's pretty much my favorite animal. a cross between a lion and a tiger, bred for its skills in magic

I really love the idea in the article about retirement....the game is ready for him to be gone.He did a lot to bring the game to the forefront at the beginning of his career....but the last several years he has been an embarrassment.
Lets bring on the new generation of the Rorys and Dustin Johnsons and the like....

F*ck and no!

The game is most definitely, without a doubt, not ready for him to retire...that is absurd.

The guy wasn't faithful to his wife, I'm over it.

Until he's 50 years old or we see other players winning a quarter of the tournaments they enter, or some guy winning the US Open on one leg.....the PGA is not ready.

What is with all the Tiger hate? So the guy likes chicks...that is a good reason for everyone to take shots at him? The guy is one of the top handful of athletes ever. He has apparently never fully recovered from the injury he sustained winning the U.S. Open in 2008. Personally, I think it is kind of sad and it has been a loss for sports fans. Whatever his announcement today, I hope it works out well for him and he gets back soon and he makes a run at Jack's record.

And the poster who says that it is time for him to retire(!), that might be the most absurd thing I've ever heard. If he did retire, that is his right. But we're talking about golf. There is no reason he can't compete for another decade or more. And as for the idea that golf would be better off without him, I bet Tim Finchem would disagree with you. I'm as excited as anybody about the next generation of players coming into the game, but it will obviously be better if there is an old guard for them to compete with. The old guard IS Tiger. The other best players in his generation combined haven't won to the level that he has.

First of all, I don't categorize golfers as athletes; they are simply really good at a non-athletic game. Don't get me wrong, it's incredible what they do, and especially Tiger, but I'm not going to call it athletic. That's just my take on it and my own personal opinion.

People like to bash celebrities when they fall, because they view the celebs as having so much, it's nice to see them have to deal with normal problems.

I don't think he should retire, he's way to young, this is golf; but he may never return to form again after the injury, and we'll see a shadow of the former player. So, in that regard, I think maybe he could retire. It would be fantastic to see him have a run at the record, but I don't want to see anything less than a healthy, dominant Tiger. It's kind of like superstars in other sports. When they get too old or their bodies won't perform at that astronomical level, they just retire, because you can't go from superstar to average joe, team player.

Yes, as a lifelong golfer and enthusiast, I do personally believe golf if better without Tiger Woods, for several reasons.
First of all is his relation with the fans. Some will say, "Oh,but he's got his foundation, and does all kinds of stuff for his charities",well that is all just for show....this is a guy who can't stand his fans.It has always been his personality since he came on tour that he wants nothing to do with fans.In the most rare of circumstances will he sign an autograph, and just really doesn't care.I know this from several experiences, from working a tour event,to meeting several tour players and getting their perspectives as well.
Second is his "incident" with his wife.Yes this is a personal problem, but it is a very big problem for golf.If this was the NBA or NFL,it wouldn't be that bad in the eyes of sports fans...but to be honest, this is the gentleman's game,it always has been and always will be.This has been a cancer for the tour for the last 2 years.
And third, I personally feel it's time for the next generation. Even if Tiger were back right now, I still think the new generation of golfers would have no problem overtaking him....however, with Tiger gone, it helps shine the spotlight more on them, instead of still on himself wondering when he'll be back.

Now,I'm not completely against Tiger. He really has done a lot for the game.He really helped bring it back to prominence with his 97' victory at Augusta, and then what else he has done.He is also huge for tv ratings.

Personally...I think he's done for the year....I've thought this for several months now.

Yeah, everyone has their own take on how they consider golfers. I think of them as athletes; I get that not everyone does. For the sake of my point, though, we can substitute "people that have played a game/sport/competition professionally" for "athlete" if that makes everyone feel better. My take is that golf is an athletic competition because it involves a physical skill set that not many people were born with. That physical skill set is obviously not the same as the ones required to play football, for example, but there is much more emphasis on strength and coordination than billiards, for example.

People like to bash celebrities when they fall, because they view the celebs as having so much, it's nice to see them have to deal with normal problems.

I agree that this is true. It is also probably one of the main reasons I don't like most people. I believe that most people are idiots. Popular culture does nothing to dispel this belief. The hero-worship/schadenfreude cycle is as good of support for this belief as you're going to find. If I like an athlete, or a musician or a writer, I like them for how they play their sport, or the music they make or what they write. I admire their talent. I really could give d*mn what they do in their private life, and I don't understand how anybody could care.

In a team sport, I agree. Guys that are hall-of-famers don't stick around to be bench players. Peyton Manning won't finish his career in Houston or Seattle as a backup QB. Kobe Bryant won't finish his career as the 9th man on a marginal playoff team. I doubt Albert Pujols will stick around making $5M a year to be a righty bat off the bench when he can no longer play everyday. But in golf, golfers golf, generally until they die. When they can no longer compete on the Tour, they play on the senior tour. And even then, they still play in the majors. They keep showing up long after they have any reasonable chance at making a cut. Their poor performance (relative to their prior dominance) doesn't hold a team back, it doesn't take up a roster spot or eat salary cap space. Continuing to play after your prime is part of golf's culture.

Also, even tho I already wrote something in the thread below. I'm guessing this was going to be the announcement. I thought I heard PTI say Steve asked him to wait til after the British. They didn't mention the announcement, Im just putting two and two together.

Also, Tiger's group apparently asked Steve Williams not to caddie for Tiger at the ATT National during the 4th of July weekend (even though Tiger/they said he could). Steve went ahead and caddied anyway. I guess his termination may be the result of that decision.

First off I want to say I'm a 59 year old white guy. Laugh- but you will see why I said that as I say my peace. This guy when he is right is the greatest golfer of all time. I am old enough to have see Jack Nicklaus play-in my opinion Tiger is better. I actually hope if he feels he can't play to the level he expects that he just rides off into the sunset. But if he feels he can come back then I say go for it. Watching golf now is boring because I know in my heart if he's right these guys are playing for 2nd place. Will he ever be right again-maybe not-doesnt look good, but to say the tour is OK without him is just biased and silly. I do not like what he did to his wife-who would- but the guy has paid his pound of flesh-I say move on. As a golfer I miss the excellance and the way he pounded those guys into submission. Greatest closer I have ever seen. These young guys are not Tiger Woods. The media is trying its best to promote these young guys but the void is there. As far as I'm concerned he owes nobody one darn thing. Maybe my 85 year old church going mother said it best-"I miss watching him play golf-and to qoute her if I may "he's not the first guy who couldnt keep it in his pants".

Yeah, I was watching. Tiger fired his caddy. You are right also in that Tiger's group asked him to not caddy for somebody this summer like he has in the past (he got this okayed with tiger as well).
