This is probably as stupid of a question as I've ever asked in my life but here goes...

If I am confirmed to fly out on a 6pm flight and opt to go "standby" to an earlier flight at 7am same day (via the airline website), will I still get my seat on the 6pm flight if I am unable to be placed on the 7am flight?

I've been on hundreds of flights but have never elected to go standby before I even get to the airport so I am a little nervous. I can't find a clear answer by googling so I thought I'd ask here. Apologies again for the question that I'm guessing has a simple "yes" answer.

We were in a situation like this once a couple years ago, and the answer was different if you were calling or doing it at the ticket counter at the airport.

If we went to the airport early and checked in for our later flight, they were able to put us on the standby list for earlier flights without us losing our seat.

If we tried to do it over the phone, they literally had to change our ticket and we weren't guaranteed our seat on the later flight.

Shit...now I'm panicked because I already made the change on the website.

Update: I called AA to figure this out and they said I was confirmed on the later flight and standby on the earlier flight. So I guess I'm ok.

Sorry, I have some friends that work for different airlines and they were all giving me different answers so I didn't want to misinform you.

Glad you got it worked out though
