RIP Yogi Berra. A true baseball legend. Credited with a slew of wonderful sayings. Stormed the beaches of Normandy. One of the greatest catchers of all time. My grandfather has told me of when his American Legion baseball team from Kansas City was in the Missouri championship against a team from St. Louis. When one of the St. Louis players game to bat and that crowd began chanting "Yogi Berra Baby Boy" my grandfather's team all looked at each other and said whose this Baby Boy wimp? Yogi proceeded to immediately homer and carry his team to victory.

I met Yogi when I was in the Navy aboard the USS Enterprise. Got to have lunch with him in the Captain's cabin. He was a wonderful, charming man, and you never knew what was going to come out of his mouth.

During lunch, we were talking about Little League baseball, and Yogi chimed in that he did not care for Little League baseball. We all were pretty astonished with his comment, and when asked why, he said ...

"When I was a kid, we didn't have Little League. We gathered in the park and played pick-up games in the morning, and played until dinner time. I see Little League games and the kids get up to bat two or three times during the course of the game. On the sand lot, we got up to bat 125 times during a game and we could all hit the ball better for it."

Difficult to argue with his logic. He was a 15-time all star in baseball, but I think he'll be more remembered for his sharp wit and observations.

RIP Yogi.

That's pretty awesome GI

I've been a Yankees fan since the late 50's. Mantle, Maris and Bobby Richardson were my favorite players, but I loved Yogi. He was a three time MVP. For some reason I can still tell you the Yankees starting lineup and main subs from the 61 team. About that time Yogi was getting to the end of his career and was starting to share time with Elston Howard.

RIP Yogi.

But Thurman Munson was, of course, the greatest Yankees catcher in history!

I loved Thurman Munson. He was a fierce competitor. No Yankee catcher came close to Yogi until Thurman Munson came along but it's hard to beat three MVP awards. Had Munson not died, he very well could have surpassed Yogi. In my book, Yogi is 1A and Thurman 1B.

My favorite Yogi-ism (hard to choose one, and who knows which he really said and which "things he said he never said") --

One day, back in the 1960s, his wife Carmen told him, "Hey, I took Tim to see Doctor Zhivago today." Yogi replied, "What the hell's wrong with him now?"

RIP

When asked about a particular restaurant by an acquaintance he relied, "nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded." Classic Yogi.

One of my favorite quotes (not just Yogi-isms) of all time. Even though he was a Yankee it struck a chord. RIP Yogi.

RIP Yogi.

That'd be 18x All Star but who's counting besides me. 13X World Series Champ too.

Off the top of my head, if I had to live anyone's life... I couldn't tell you anyone's that would have been more interesting than Yogi's.
