Passing at 8:40... Twice as good as 4:20 and I'm sure Tom is pleased with that.

I never put the entire Gainesville scene & his roll in it together until reading about him today. Founding Eagle, Bernie Leadon and Stephen Stills were in a band together first and then Leadon's younger brother, Tom was in Petty's first band (and was again when Petty put Mudcrutch back together again recently.) Petty also took guitar lessons from Don Felder who would later join the Eagles while Felder was learning the slide guitar from Duane Allman. That's pretty cool stuff.
Anyway, Petty was far from my favorite musician.... I think we all have that guy who is big that just doesn't move you, Petty has always been mine. I still recognize his contributions to a genre of music I enjoy and will be thinking of his family, it's never easy.

I'm with you on this one and Tom Petty's music is perfectly in my wheel house age-wise.

A handful of songs always will stick out. I Need to Know and Refugee are both really good. I'll belt out Breakdown from time to time on Karaoke Wednesday sponsored by Jameson's. American Girl is one of the best convertible songs ever. Of all his song's, this is my favorite:

RIP Tom

Very much my position, too. I could definitely appreciate his song writing ability and his contribution to rock music for the past two generations, and I certainly didn't dislike him or his music, but he never really moved me or spoke to me. Never owned a Tom Petty album or saw him in concert. I liked a couple of his songs a bit, but that's as far as it went for me. Undoubtedly one of the icons of rock, though. Sorry to see him go and I feel for his friends & family.

RIP TP

He truly created his own "sound" (vocals and music), and was such a great SONGWRITER who bridged and navigated multiple eras of rock and roll--a rare talent indeed.

Petty and Jeff Lynne joining forces is a rare talked about song writing machine.

Did you ever see the special doc on the Traveling Wilburys and how the group basically sat in a house and just starting writing songs? It was pretty fascinating to see those guys go through the process.
