Here is a really thorough comparison of the two quarterbacks. Is Matt Fairchild right or is he smoking crack?

MATT FAIRCHILD DISCUSSES THE TWO MAN RACE FOR THE HEISMAN TROPHY
I hate to break it to the rest of the nation, but the Heisman Trophy is not a foregone conclusion as ESPN and CBS would leave you to believe. As the media would love to anoint the Heisman Trophy to Troy Smith already because of his one big game performance against Texas (17-26, 269 yards, 2 TD, O INTS against the 105th rated pass defense) and the fact that Ohio State is undefeated to this point, I have a couple of simple but sweet words: WAKE UP!

Brady Quinn will enter Saturday's game against Air Force with 27 total TD's through his first nine games. Troy Smith on the other hand will enter his game against Northwestern this week with 23 total TD's through his first ten games. So by simply looking at their total TD's we can gather that Brady has more at this point and likely will finish with about 8-10 more TD's than Troy.

But Troy Smith gets more touchdowns from his legs right? WRONG. Brady actually has 2 TD's running while Troy only has 1. So let's compare the two guys in terms of how they played against the same opponents this year. Notre Dame and Ohio State have both faced off with Penn State and Michigan State. Both teams won against the same competition but Troy Smith must have played a lot better than Brady Quinn during those two games to warrant such a huge lead in the ESPN Heisman Watch and the CBSSportsline.com Heisman Hopefuls list right?

WRONG. Troy Smith has a combined 349 yards passing with 3 TD's and 2 INT's. Brady Quinn has a combined 606 yards passing with 8 TD's and 1 INT. So Brady clearly has the edge in same team matchups. Now I decided to take a look at the defenses they have faced and I actually thought that the Buckeyes must be facing a lot better competition with regards to this supposed run away Heisman media driven contest. Nope, I was wrong. The average ranked total defense that Troy Smith and the Buckeyes have faced is 63. On the other hand the average ranked total defense that Brady Quinn and the Irish have faced is 66.

So why is Troy Smith(projected stats of 2600 yards passing with 27 total TD's and only 4 INT's) in the lead in most people's mind if Brady's stats(projected at 3439 yards passing with 35 total TD's and only 5 INT's) are so much better? Because Ohio State is the number one team in the country. Both quarterbacks are amazing talents and I'm not trying to say that Troy Smith is terrible by any means but if you asked NFL GM's which one they would take first to start a team I can guarentee you 99% of them without hesitation would say Quinn.

Troy Smith plays on a great team. Brady Quinn plays on a good team. Take away Troy Smith from the Buckeyes and they would still be 10-0 right now. Take away Brady Quinn from the Fighting Irish and they would be 5-4 right now. Brady Quinn is the more valuable player and the most outstanding at his position and on his team. Troy Smith is a great player but isn't even the best player on his team the past two seasons with last year being AJ Hawk and this year it is LB James Laurinaitis.

In the end the media is going to decide who is the Heisman winner after they watch Troy Smith take on the Michigan defense and Brady Quinn take on the USC Trojan's the following week. More than likely both quarterback are going to have good days and quite possibly lead their team to victories. But if Brady Quinn can lead the Irish to an 11-1 record with an offensive line that is on pace to give up 26 sacks while providing little to no running game and an average at best defense then you have to give him the Heisman.

Brady Quinn is the better player. He has never taken money from a booster or been suspended off the team. I just wish the rest of the media would pay attention and actually watch the games before giving it to the QB with the best win-loss record. Let's get it right this year and give it to the Carson Palmer and not the Eric Crouch of this year.

If all that is true, he's right. It's annoying that after the Illinois performance the common opinion seems to be, "Smith is entitled to a less than perfect game. As long as OSU keeps winning, he should get the Heisman."

The fact that NO ONE else is considered a serious contender to Smith is appalling.

Quinn is my leader at this moment. He wins out, I'd say there's a chance.

But scUM's defense is the greatest ever and a win at home agaisnt them for Smith would seal the deal. Should Quinn knock off SC in Los Angeles, it would have to be in Carson Palmer-like fashion.

My BC buddy doesn't think that this was a well written article and that his argument is a better case for Colt McCoy. I asked him if Quinn & McCoy switched places, which team would be better off. The answer, "I just don't think it was a well written article."

I love the blind hate.

That's the part that really gets under my skin. Its not that Smith is talked about as a candidate, or even that he's the favorite. I can understand that, he's having a great year at the head of a 10-0 team that will likely be playing for the NC in January. But its how annointed he's been that I can't stand, how no one even talks about the fact that there are Quarterbacks having statistically better years (and not just Quinn), that he's not nearly as essential to his team as some of the other candidates (Quinn, Slaton, Rice), or that he plays behind one of the best, if not the best, o-line's in college football and still manages to only throw for 100 yards and an INT against Illinois.

I really hate how the Heisman has become such a team award. There's a reason its given out before bowl season-its not supposed to be for the MVP of the best team, just the MVP of college football. But does anyone think Vince Young wouldn't of won it if they voted and gave it out after the Rose Bowl last year?

Well written article? That is rich...considering BC is now a 2 loss team. I enjoy the blind hate too.

I wish I cared enough about BC to give him a hard time, but I don't. I thought he was going to cry when Tom Terrific got shown up by Payton Manning. His hate for ND is so strong he can't even bring himself to want to see Weis do well.

Living here in Texas...I am surrounded by ND haters--so I understnad. Having grown up in South Bend and then the Chicago area...I just figured everyone was a fan. Not so much. For ND fans, we have our own national channel and non-stop press coverage. For us it's normal...for all the other teams...life isn't so good, so all they can do is hate. I love being an ND fan!

I definitely agree with you guys. A simple thing to consider in this situation: Paul Hornung. Won the Heisman with a 2-8 record. Voters need to stick to tradition and realize that it is an individual award that praises the best player in the country. Troy Smith has not been the best player in the country. At least when Brady loses he puts up better numbers.

True. And some of these voters need to realize that the QB isn't 100% responsible for the teams record. TS is a good quarterback, but not even close to a Heisman runaway winner. Look at the stats, SOS and common match-ups. BQ wins in every one of those categories. It's a no-brainer. the only thing Smith lovers can answer with is Troy is 10-0. Actually, OSU is 10-0, so give the whole team the Heisman.
