I love the University of Notre Dame. My family and I are blessed to be a part of this University. I want to thank Jack Swarbrick and Brian Kelly for this opportunity that continues my growth as a coach and offers a greater leadership role in the program. I’m very excited to stay with the defensive line and help them develop to their fullest potential-- both on and off the field.

- Mike Elston

Mike has been instrumental to the success of Notre Dame football. His commitment and passion for this program and University are second to none. In many ways, Mike can best be described as the backbone of our coaching staff. He’s tutored All-Americans at every position group in his tenure at Notre Dame, including linebacker, defensive line and placekicker. Mike’s also been a vital resource in recruiting — leading the efforts of that office for two years. He’s, without a doubt, a future head coach and we’re very, very fortunate to have him on our staff.

- Brian Kelly

Figured he deserved his own instead of a general thread.

Also DL coach still.

Also just made a lot of $$$ I assume.

Well deserved raise and title change.

I thought he was Associate Head Coach last year?

He was the Assistant Head Coach. This paragraph from the school's release I think really tells the difference between the two:
In addition to his duties related to coaching the defensive line, Elston will represent the program when directed to so by Kelly or when Kelly is unavailable. This will include but not be limited to assisting in managing the football program, participating in press conferences, making public appearances (including alumni and donor functions) and attending departmental and University meetings.

It sounds like the position is grooming him even more to be a HC by giving him some background in some of the off the field duties that a HC has.

That makes more sense. Gotta be a plus for Elston to get more experience in the life of a head coach.

The Michigan poster is apparently very well connected and legit. Notice he doesn't promise anything, just that there is communication and mutual interest.

It'd be kind of crazy for him to jump after 14 years with Kelly and another promotion... but that'd also be a clear tell as to what's going on.

The timing of this is hilarious after FightingIrish7's meltdown yesterday of how Elston couldn't possibly be unhappy being passed over for the DC job yet again, lol.

the timing is critical. It could be that the contact was made PRIOR to Elston's paper promotion, in which case this is a non-story.

Unless Elston is just fed up with not getting the DC job, a jump to Michigan makes zero sense.
I get it’s his alma mater, but what’s he going to do there? Be defensive-line-coach-in-waiting? He’s already a recruiting coordinator at an elite program. And I certainly hope we’re paying the man.

The rumour is that Mattison is going to retire... which means their D line position could be open. Now, UM just hired the D line coach from Cincinnati and haven't assigned him a position group as yet... so maybe he will slot in there.

The main positive as I see it would be that if Elston wants to be an HC, a couple years under Harbaugh would probably help his cause. It would be similar to what happened with Tony Alford... basically he took a lateral move because he thought working with Urban would help him land an HC position.

How’s that working out for Tony Alford?
Alford was interviewing for HC jobs when he was at Notre Dame. Didn’t hear his name much this cycle. If Elston wants to be a head at, say, a MAC school, he can get there from his current gig. If he wants to aim for a P5 job he needs to be a DC. Going from D Line at Notre Dame to D Line at Michigan doesn’t seem like a move up.

“There’s only one scholarship left” - Mike Elston. That’s pretty surprising given the 7 mark on signing day and then the 6-7 projected by a few analysts. Well then I hope the last one is a stud DE.

Absolutely a great article. Good insight as to what makes Elston tick. Don't think the Associate Head Coach was a paper title in any way. He's not going anywhere anytime soon.

So is his next job...

Taking over for Kelly?

Taking over the smoldering tire fire of Harbaugh's reign?

... or Purdue when ND hires B1G champ Brohm?

Fantastic interview above. That is what great programs need. Coaches that serve as a foundational piece. I love Elston even more now. I hope he's able to coach up this DL to new heights and continue his good work.

What a great guy, I'll be rooting extra hard for him now.
