Why would Russia walk over Egypt? By all accounts Salah will be ready to go and Egypt looked like it belonged against Uruguay.

I didn't say they would walk over Egypt, I said it's interesting to see if they do. My point is Russia looked really strong, but it was Saudi, and we'll see who they really are come next game.

Mexico looking sharp.

Up 1-0

Yup. Their defense has been terrific and that counter has been crazy fast. My gut thought this would be a good one, while my brain kept telling me Germany would be up by 2 at half. MX coming to play.

I just do not want to see Germany in second place and opening up the knockout round vs Brazil.

I guess I saw the game differently. I didn’t think the Russians looked that good. Poor passing. They just played a team a lot worse. But they could prove me wrong against Egypt.

I'd agree there was poor passing at times, but not horrible. I think the fact they are the home team, and it was the opener had a lot to do with it too. I hope they come back down to earth vs Egypt and get bounced by Uruguay.

Mexico looks gassed.

They do. I hope that translates into opportunity for Germany. If I'm confident in any team playing down 1, it would be Germany. Not happy at all though with Germany's shot selection and passing near the goal. Too many F'ing long shots. I'd love to see more wide play, more crosses, and more corner sets.

Holy cow. Germany looked uninspired, but MX did look strong and they earned it. Hopefully this is a wake up call for Germany. It will suck ballz if they end up playing Brazil in the first game of the knockout stage. Those are the #1 and #2 FIFA ranked teams folks. Toooooooo early for that kind of match up.

Has Alexi Lalas always been a MX slong rider?

magnificent bending strike by Coutinho.

Hoping for Swiss upset, but I'm thinking it 3-0 Brazil.

Alexi Lalas was sucking up to the MX team the entire broadcast as well. Not sure if it was love for MX, or hate for Germany.

He’s just being calculated... he’ll troll the fvk out of them live on air when they bow out... fuck Landon forever and always if that shits true tho...

Cool off on Alexi Lalas --- he has an on-air personality and he plays to counterpoint the other announcers. His "differing" and "stronger" opinions are what inserts life into many of these shows and why he keeps being given choice seats at the table in prime well-paying venues.

In my opinion, without Lalas some of these intermission sessions would be utter yawners. Warren Barton began having stronger opinions (influenced I'll bet by Lalas and what the producers wanted,) and now he's getting game-calling gigs. Aly Wagner gets the prime game calls because she actually has opinions (plus does her homework.) These people genuinely "add value" to the entertainment experience. ( I fear Wagner will check some of her critical analyses here on world cup since she's breaking new ground for herself and "the girls", but she'll at least have facts stacked up a mile deep.)

But griping about every possible thing as if it were terribly real is fun too, I guess.

Lalas's other announcers were two MX cheerleaders though.... He didn't counter jack.

North American soccer legends unite, sign symbolic treaty in support of Mexico team in 2018 World Cup | abc7.com

This year, Mexico is the only team from North America to have qualified for the time-honored global tournament. In the spirit of sportsmanship, as well as regional unity, representatives from the United States, Mexico and Canada came together to sign a symbolic treaty in support of the Mexican National Team.

Estrella Jalisco, the official sponsor of El Tri, brought together three soccer legends, Alexi Lalas (USA), Dwayne de Rosario (Canada) and Luis Hernandez (Mexico) to sign the North American Adoptive Futbol Team Agreement (NAAFTA)-which calls all fans from the United States and Canada to rally behind Team Mexico as they head to Russia to compete in the World Cup.

"This team, and this country, and the fans, and the individual players, over the years, they've earned my respect. And they've earned my support. And so, I'm throwing my support to Mexico this World Cup," said Alexi Lalas.

I want Mexico to get 6 points but still not qualify for the round of 16... That would be too sweet.

Great players know how to be in the right place at the right time... Harry Kane has mastered that.

I could only listen to the England game at work today, so now I am sitting down and watching the replay. It's the 25th minute and it should be at least 3-0 right now. Jesse Lingard should have a brace to go with Kane's 1. They'll need to hit those chances against teams like Belgium.

Update: Just saw the foul on Kyle Walker to give Tunisia the penalty. It is a penalty, however, I do know there are two corners in the future where Kane just gets bear hugged and held down. I understand things can get rough on corners, but that should always be a foul.

Harry Kane might just be the best pure forward in the world. Knows how to finish, always in the right spot at the right time.

Cautiously optimistic as an England fan.

Euro soccer is such dogshit... it's getting to where I don't even care anymore... Celtic wins a double treble (first in history) and has to go through five qualifying rounds to get into "Champions" league but the fourth place finishers in a number of other leagues are auto qualified already... what a load of piss. I don't care what league is this or that, all that is based on money and this only serves to widen the gap further,... champions should get in... then auto bid the second and third place from there from the big money leagues from there until the auto spots are taken and let everyone else qualify.
