Breathing freer now. This team is really hard to be a fan of, because I can't see the light at the end of the tunnel --- even with some reduced goal visions. Maybe you guys can bring some understanding.)

Just touching on this... the overall national program has come a long ways in the time I've been a strong fan. The future still looks brighter than ever long term. I do get the frustrations in the here and now though. They should be able to out athlete lesser teams at this point and almost never seem able to do so.

This is a frustrating sport unless you have people with great foot skills in tight places from about the midline to about the top of the box. We have very few people who could even make a claim to be that. The objection that I've had with Altidore (even though he fed Pulisic well on the goal) is that he can bring a ball down to his feet but rarely deliver the next ball to anyone productively. Dempsey can occasionally still deliver a productive ball, and so can Bradley. Most of the other guys can't, other than the obvious (Pulisic and Nagbe).

So who do you start? Howard/ Cameron/ Brooks/ Pulisic/ Nagbe and then who? Probably Dempsey and Bradley since few others can do anything productive with the passing game. This was the first time I saw Villafana look decent at that. Yedlin doesn't seem to be good at it, but his speed cures his other ills. Is that good enough? Johnson has looked actually bad in the last two games --- he completely dogged it on the Venezuelan set piece goal. Do we have anyone with really good foot skills? (other than the obvious.)
IMO Wood is very good on the ball and he is a very good distributor but no one is really as good as Nagbe and Pulisic... maybe Dempsey when he is in full Duece mode. Johnson is a necessity in midfield unfortunately. Under Klinsman he played mainly as a defender so he is still settling in at MF for USA. To be honest watching Hexagonal games is tough. Welcome to watching USA soccer. :)

I would go Yedlin Cameron Brooks Villafana
Johnson Bradley Nagbe
Pulisic
Dempsey Wood

What happened to Julian Green? Wasn't he supposed to be the next big thing before Pulisic was even on most peoples' minds?

Or was that just a result of his inclusion on the World Cup roster, and his goal against Belgium, inflating hype that wasn't really there?

My thoughts are that he has not yet made it back onto Arena's radar to get through the Hex. Sounds like he needs to find a position and get some minutes.

Johannsen just fell off the map. I think he had a nagging injury in 2016 just not sure what happened this year.

Cack and the Coach seem nearly to agree. What it seems to me that the team CAN'T do (despite the game commentators griping about them not doing) is high press with both Altidore and Dempsey in the game up top. With Wood in the game, you could manage some of that. I wonder though --- high pressing with Dempsey and Johnson for significant periods of time? When last year Bedoya was healthy and playing, he and Wood managed a lot of work-rate at this, but some of the current pieces don't seem to fit.

I watched the Mexico Honduras game last night. One take away is that Honduras' defense is very poor and they gave out early on in the 2nd Half. Mexico's attack is tricky and if our defense is not paying attention there will be some poached goals Sunday.

We have absolutely got to watch the counter attack. If Bradley is too far up consistently we are in trouble.

We can exploit them out wide but only with good wing play from Yedlin and Villafana and good service or dribbles into the box from Pulisic and Nagbe. I could not tell much of Mexico's defense becasue they didnt have to do anything but they did an excellent job suffocating anything up the middle ( which was all Honduras was able to do mostly) They did look suspect out wide though.

Also, Mexico was totally exaggerating any and all contact and the ref was in a totally giving mood. We can expect much worse on Sunday.

I really dont see Altidore being effective in his normal role. His work rate is not there although he did link up with Pulisic well a couple times. I would rather see Dempsey ads a Classic 9 and let Wood roam offensively with Pulisic pulling strings and Bradley sitting at midfield to cover the counter as best he can.

if Bradley plays any further back than what he has been the past few games Howard is going to have to come out of goal

Chances we pull this off tonight?

I'd say a win... > 10 percent

A point?? > 20 percent.

It's frustrating because we should be closer to surpassing them than we are. I still say Klin pushing forward and allowing them to make the WC last time round saved their program ( at least in the short term to now).

It's also frustrating how they have this one ultimate home field venue that no one ever wins at. We can have that in Seattle or somewhere like that, but we insist on playing them in venues close to the border where their fans out number ours....

I'm going to keep harping on it... since Jurgen pressed forward and allowed Mexico to make the WC the trend in the rivalry completely flipped. We had won the majority of the head to head matchups since 2000 ish, we were typically ranked higher and trending better. It seemed to all flip back since that pair of games and it's been us back to playing catchup. Hopefully that changes. One would think as soccer continues to grow here we will pass them in this whole thing 'soon'....

Beasley... smh. Retire already. Arena screwed up putting him the starting lineup.

Missed our goal but saw theirs... I like big bodies on corners obviously but not when it takes BOTH center backs up in the opposing box.

This is your first time watching them play soccer isn't it.... they have one gear, 'dirty bitchass' basically covers it, always.
