Documents show Big 12 flirting with Houston, Memphis, others

With Big 12 expansion back on the table, officials from the University of Houston, the University of Memphis, University of Central Florida and Colorado State University have been lobbying members of the Big 12's composition committee, according to documents ESPN.com has obtained.

On Feb. 24, Memphis president David Rudd penned a letter to Gee and copied Oklahoma president David Boren and Baylor president Ken Starr, the other two members of the composition committee, as well as former Big 12 board chairman and Kansas State president Kirk Schulz. In the letter, Rudd pledged that Memphis will make a $500 million investment in academic and athletic infrastructure over the next five years. Rudd also enclosed a letter from FedEx chairman Fred Smith, who stated that the delivery services giant headquartered in Memphis will be behind the school's Big 12 campaign.

"We strongly support the university's efforts to become a member of an expanded Big 12 athletic conference," Smith wrote to Rudd in a letter dated Feb. 23. "In support of [Memphis'] Big 12 aspirations, we have researched college conference sponsorships and are prepared to become a major Big 12 sponsor of football and basketball."

Smith also wrote that FedEx would be prepared to sponsor a Big 12 championship game.

"We believe the University of Memphis and the Big 12 are a great fit and hope our support will contribute to the University of Memphis becoming a member of this storied athletic conference in the near future," Smith wrote.

A&M suspends two football assistants for their role in inappropriate slide presentation during female fan event

Debi Fincher, a Wheelock resident, said she attended the event in previous years and saw Turner's presentation during his first stint in College Station. The past president of the Brazos County Aggie Moms' Club said Turner's presentation was very similar to a prior one and drew laughs from older women and didn't cause a stir that evening.
"It's never been an issue," Fincher said. "I was surprised at the backlash."

You do realize that A&M is in the SEC.

Really? No way. Guess in a few years they'll stop scheduling Texas and look to schedule ND. The Big 12 should look to add a nice Christian school like Baylor to the other 11.

(My bad) :)

You won't find many bigger opponents of the LDS faith than me, but that is ridiculous.

Seriously -- I'm pretty confident in saying that a Baylor incident would NEVER happen at BYU. Maybe advocacy groups are better served putting their efforts towards having BU removed from the Big 12.

Busy week in Austin

Busy week in Austin

Texas added commitments from:

Toneil Carter, RB (decommited from Georgia)
Daniel Young, RB (decommited from Houston)
Derek Kerstetter, OT (decommited Okla St)
Cade Brewer, TE (decommited SMU)

Herman promises Texas will be more physical. All are from Texas. Carter and Kerstetter are each rated a four star.

Decommitment - Lagaryonn Carson, SDE

DL Lagaryonn Carson no longer committed to Texas (reportedly academic and behavioral issues, mutual parting)

Offers listed (unknown if current) - Oklahoma, Baylor, A&M, SMU, North Texas, TCU, Alabama, Arkansas.... (from Texarkana). Interestingly, no offer from Houston (or Oklahoma State).

Baylor has one commitment for '17, who is an early enrollee and has signed.

Houston has seen five recruits decommit since Herman was hired at Texas.

The remarkable story of TCU's Rhodes scholar, Caylin Moore (ESPN)

Life isn't linear or logical, and Moore's experiences add up only because they all actually happened to him. He's the son of a convicted murderer and a sexual assault survivor. He spent most of his childhood sharing a bed with his mother and two siblings, living in a house without hot water on the crime-ridden border of Compton and Carson, south of Los Angeles. He collected cans and bottles to buy football cleats, blossomed in Snoop Dogg's youth league and went on to play in high school and college. He has been a Fulbright scholar and, yes, a campus custodian. At TCU, he majors in economics, minors in math and sociology, and carries a GPA of 3.934.

From an early age, Moore understood the link between football and education. When he posted straight A's in seventh grade, he won an award from the Snoop League and received a laptop computer from Snoop Dogg, which Moore keeps to this day. At Verbum Dei High School, an all-male Catholic school just west of the L.A. neighborhood of Watts, Moore became an all-conference quarterback and made the honor roll every semester.

Moore applied to 25 colleges and was accepted by 19. (The six nos all came from Ivy League schools, Taylor Moore says.) He picked Marist College, along the Hudson River in Poughkeepsie, New York, which provided a strong financial aid package and a chance to play in the FCS. Moore didn't hesitate to move across the country. He loved seeing snow and bonded with his teammates.

While at Marist, an email arrived. Moore had qualified to apply for a Fulbright Scholarship. He called his mother.

"She said, 'Coming where we come from, that's not something you dare dream for your kids, to even apply for that,'" Moore said. "You don't have any of those conversations. She cried from the mere fact that I was applying."

He was accepted to the program and flew to England to study the trans-Atlantic slave trade at the University of Bristol. He took part in an archaeological dig and met members of the British Parliament. Moore returned to Marist feeling like a changed man.

A new challenge would test his resolve. He had expected big things on the field in 2014 but sustained a back injury while throwing before the first game. He appeared in only two contests, and a doctor thought he needed surgery. Moore decided to transfer but wanted to finish the year at Marist. He also needed money, so he began doing custodial work. His year began in football pads with a realistic goal to start at quarterback. It ended in a hoodie, mopping floors and cleaning up vomit from partiers. "A really humbling experience," he said.

Texas killed it on Signing Day - the top 6 players in Texas, seven players in the Top 100, fifteen of their nineteen signees either four or five stars, and a DB haul that is arguably the best in the nation - six players ranked in the top 25 of DBs - all in-state recruits.

Additionally, of their starters they lose four Seniors and three early entrants to the draft at this point, but possibly a couple more. The other starters return.

The only school that has their teams ranked in the top 15 in football, basketball and baseball is.... TCU.

Unless there is another Kyler Murray at OU, Oklahoma's starting QB just got drafted #9 overall to the A's. He is projected to have a $4.8 million signing bonus. If he was smart, he'd take that and run.

He's allowed to take the baseball money and still play college football. He would only lose his baseball amateur status.

The Athletics are cool with him continuing his football career, but it's their choice as to whether they pay him any money now, or if they wait.
