r/CFB has jokes, but I think it's funny how with the hiring of Cristobal Miami fans are all like, "the administration, which has always been the issue for the last 20 years, is finally getting out of the way and the program will be amazing again!" but at the same time are like "Randy Shannon and Al Golden were the worst coaches ever." If I remember correctly those guys were specifically brought in to "clean up" a program that relies entirely on South Florida prospects who guess what? Aren't going to make it in a "clean" program.

Randy Shannon's UM team tied Notre Dame for the APR title the year they met in the sun bowl... and UM immediately fired him. They aren't that concerned with a 'clean program'.

I like the hire, I just hope he never wears the corny shirt and tie look ever again.

Welcome to ND Coach Golden!

Nothing we don’t know but from Sampson:

“Freeman wanted experience in the role, something that was noticeably absent in Notre Dame’s Fiesta Bowl collapse against Oklahoma State. But a willingness to run the head coach’s scheme was non-negotiable.”

From Loy:

“This comes after we were told he was in South Bend for an interview for the job on Sunday, Feb. 6.”

So he did sneak to SB during the week! Think this in the end was just a loyalty thing for him holding off on accepting.

Great day for ND. MF's foundation has been shook by all of the departures, but in the end I think he likely upgraded ST, RB, OL, DL. TE will be TBD, but the new guy has a lot of experience and TE recruits itself.

Then he got a proven DC who's lead at every level, NFL, college, HC, and positions coach. MF can be involved, or he can step away as much as he likes knowing there's a DC there who needs zero help.

Elite hiring IMO.

That's the thing, the admin said they want a clean program, but they want a clean program that wins which wasn't going to be something you could do over night there if at all. So I think it's unfair to guys like Shannon and Golden who were asked to do something that likely is no longer a priority and blame them (entirely) for the shortcomings.

Clearly neither were nearly successful enough, but it's important to acknowledge how handcuffed they were as well.

Golden sounds like he's only gotten better with age from the interviews with the Bengals players. Seems highly respected and seems to bring a lot of energy.

Randy Shannon had to clean up the mess on and off the field that was left by Coker and he did that. He did so as a guy who grew up in Miami, played there, was a GA, coached DL and LB before becoming DC. He guided the school to the third-best Academic Progress Rate in NCAA Division I FBS and during his four years only one player was arrested. Randy Shannon was also the one person who avoided Nevin Shapiro like the plague of a human being that he is.

28-22 and this off field clean up wasn't good enough for them, however, so Randy Shannon got let go. Pretty typical of college football, that.

As for Al Golden, his tenure started with probation and self imposed bowl bans from the booster scandal with Shapiro. His first Canes team was 6-6 and bowl eligible but the school withdrew itself from bowl consideration. He could have used those practices. He went 7-5 a year later and again they didn't go to a bowl. He went 0-5 against Florida State and they dumped him. Weren't many off the field issues then either.

Miami now hasn't been Miami The U for a long time.

I think the last time I was excited about a coaches name fitting the University was George O’Leary…

Pleased with the hire and pleased that we can start to move forward here with a full staff.

Wild how much turnover the staff has had but it's going to make Spring practice very interesting. I hope the trend of more media access continues and i'll drown myself in all the kool-aid.

My only complaint about bringing in Golden is that he's starting to look like Lenny from LA Law

Do we know if he is a booth guy or a sideline guy?
He hasn't been a DC since 2005, but all of the Google images I could find from UVA show him on the sidelines.

Interesting that he was considered a candidate for ND when both Willingham and Weis were fired. He had not been an HC yet when Willingham was fired.

Any idea what prompted Freeman to reach out to Golden in the first place or Golden to reach out to ND? Who called who first and what prompted it?

Did Freeman wake up one morning, and say “I don’t know him all that well but I think I’ll call Al Golden “?

Did McNulty recommend Freeman give at least give Golden, his college teammate, a call before he left for BC?

Did Golden or his representatives reach out to Notre Dame that he’d at least be interested ?

Did Freeman run into him at a coaches clinic so there was some relationship?

Did Jim Tressel know somebody who worked with Golden, and Tressel recommended his adopted son at least give Golden a call?

Was curious if they would've crossed paths much in Cincinnati. Do all the football coaches in town hang out and... watch basketball?
