I am sure this has been brought up before, but I was unable to find a thread for this specifically....

I think we can all agree we need rb depth and too bring in another highly rated Nose guard, but imo our biggest concern must be big time defensive backs who could possibly enroll/play early. I think we have a good base of DBs after next year, but we will no doubt lose some serious talent in our secondary after next year. Who do you guys think are our top targets next year in the secondary? elsewhere?

BTW im sure this thread is a couple weeks premature, im just curious for some opinions

Thanks

DT, OT, RB are by far the most important. As for specific targets, Tommy Schutt (Chicago NT), Jordan Diamond (Chicago OT) need to be primary concerns. We have to defend our own backyard, and those are two big time national recruits at key positions of need. If we're really returning to glory days those kids need to be locks.

We have some safeties in 2012 (Slaughter, Motta, Badger, Hardy), but safety is still a huge need in 2012. I say 2-3 in that class.

I think we take:

3-4 OL
1-2 DT
0-2 QB
2-3 WR
2 RB
2-3 S
2 CB
1-2 OLB
2-3 ILB
1-2 DE
0-1 TE

Adds up to about 16 recruits using the 'minimums' so the rest is going to be flex depending on who all leaves and such and other considerations. WR and ILB are two underrated needs in next year's class. We really have no proven commodities at WR after Floyd leaves and at ILB it would be great to bring in some 5* talent to learn from Manti and step into his shoes when he leaves the year after.

Big needs are DT, OL, RB, Safety, WR, Corner and ILB!

Kelly will go after QB Cyler Miles hard also!

DT isn't a huge need unless we get a transfer. Right now we are 3 deep with solid guys that will all be he through 2012. So we really only need one stud unless someone like Stockton leaves in which case we should really add two.

I understand what you are saying. We didn't take one this year and would hate to miss on a DT two years in a row. I would love to get one or two stud DTs come in next year and be able to redshirt for a year.

One thing that I think is important in this next class is a talent upgrade. it won't be a huge class, so we need to pursue high quality and ultra talented recruits. Try to hit some big time home runs in this class.

I think you need to take 3-4 guys on the OL no matter what. That should be a year in, year out must for any team. Shane Callahan and Jordan Diamond should be high priorities for this team at the tackle position. A strong high quality guard in this class is Ryan Anderson.

We got some good numbers in the secondary this year so for next year I would like to see us land a true safety rather than a hybrid athlete. A name like Bam Bradley is a name I would love to see on our verbal list next year.

As loaded as this class is with quarterbacks, I think it's equally loaded with running backs which is good for ND considering it's need at this position. Reasonable options at this position include Drew Harris, Keith Marshall, and Rushel Shell.

We brought in some great athletes at the DE position this year so I look for 1-2 studs in this class to continue to add depth. Noah Spence will be a highly sought after DE that would be a great get for ND. La'Troy Lewis is a player that would fit the hybrid DE/OLB that this staff looks for.

It would be nice to open somewhat of a pipeline in Ohio at Colerain H.S. We were able to get a solid MLB in Jarrett Grace this year and we will most likely pursue his highschool teammate Joe Bolden.

Some other athletes to keep an eye on in this class are Nelson Agholor and Ronald Darby.

I love Keith Marshall...I mean Sanders Jr would be awsome get, but Marshall would be great.

Actually like this list but I made a few changes

we need at least 2 RBs, a true NT, lots of OL and DBs

I can see them trying to target just 1QB and WR trying to focus on elite talents (Miles and Green-Beckham as examples)

Darboh is another elite WR that ND is all over from the mid-west.

I agree we don't need two, but we need a real NT, not just a DT. Stockton and Cwynar are both undersized for NTs and are better 4-3 DTs. Beyond that, Stockton's eligibility is up in 2013, Cwynar's in 2012. If we don't get a NT this year, then in 2013 we could be in a situation where with an injury we have a true freshmen NT in the two deep. That is not a recipe for success.

NT is a must, and this is a great year to get one as Tommy Schutt is a local kid and is a true NT. People are all fused about the skilled players from across the country, I'm worried about locking down the trench warriors in our own backyard.

USF, Michigan, MSU, BC, Pitt, Wake, USC, Stanford, Navy... I'd start there...

That's a good point on NT vs. DT which is a nuance most people ignore (I listed as DT only because on recruiting services I've always seen them lump them both in that category).

With regards to Stockton, his big problem has been staying healthy. He redshirted last year, was injured this year (had shoulder surgery) so he *could* gain a 6th year from medical hardship. At 6' 300ish (he was 290 last year and I've heard he's up over 300 this year) he is a little light compared to NFL 3-4 NTs who typically range between 320 and 360. If he could stay healthy and keep working out he could probably get up around that range, but right now I agree with you, it doesn't look that promising. One prototypical 3-4 NT stud is definitely a big need in this class.

Dorial Green-Beckham is the next big thing. If we have a real shot he should be Kelly's top target.

RB, Secondary, OL, DT are priority, with our obvious recruitment of the best tight end in the country.

I watched that video of Miles and I love the kid. I think that is the direction our QB plans in the future need to head. Dual threat isn't a requirement for the spread, but it adds another dimension to the attack.
