Why can't he just enter the portal and come play for us :(

On top of this dude though and the kid who made that unbelieveable play in the end zone Saturday, why is Northwestern so much better in the back end than we are? Are we just not good at evaluating talent back there, or are we not developing the talent we sign??? This is something that is very troubling to me.

in an alternate universe Newsome and Paulson Adebo would be ND's starting corners this season :(

He was a better CB than Griffith on the 7v7 trail, he was a better CB than Griffith at IMG and he was a bad miss by the staff. The fact that their IMG teammate Andre Cisco (Syracuse) declared early and is expected to go in the 2nd round makes it suck even more.

Now Newsome has a chance to go before Julian Love in the draft. Not that it matters exactly but it is interesting considering how this thread started 4 years ago.

the 2016 season really hurt what could have been a really talented defensive back field the past few years.

2016 KILLED ND's DB room for years. Besides those already mentioned, there was also:

Elijah Hicks decommit - Would've started 40+ games if not for Covid at Cal (CB/S)

Thomas Graham - Oregon. Maybe BK doesn't blow it with the no eat in home meal if they were a 9/10 win team?

Russ Yeast - Does he pick a 10 win ND?

Elijah Gates - Doesn't eliminate ND when they led.

Would you blame it on Todd Lyght Crus?

You didn't click on the rest of the teams. He had offers from:

Northwestern
Vandy
Va Tech
Virginia
BC
Arkansas
Illinois
Iowa
Iowa St
Minnesota
Purdue
Rutgers
Syracuse
The Ivy League
The MAC

Plus, who knows who else offered? He committed on 4-3-17 and didn't report offers after that.

He's certainly part of it. BVG and the '16 season are other factors in the 2017(Elijah Gates actually cut ND when BVG was fired). ND basically went 0 for the class in '17.

The new staff/Rees missed on some gems in 2018 and have gotten low production out of what we thought was a solid / at least decent, 2018 DB haul

OK... last one until he makes a Pro Bowl or a P6 in a Super Bowl. I promise.

Played 21 games, 18 starts, during his college career. Fifteen career penalties, including seven pass interference penalties in his last 14 games. Fair play to him knowing that most line judges are going to call PI because the rules benefit the offense most of the time.

Very good in Cover 3. Probably an NFL starter within two years.

All of that said, I think everyone here can agree he was not the missing link to a National Championship and that Notre Dame's defenses under Elko and Lea performed quite well while he was at Northwestern, where he missed some time in 2018 and 2019 due to injury.

I wish him well in the pros. His NU teammate is probably one of the top OT in the draft.

You know I'm bumping this.

And he took the spot everyone was betting JOK was going to land at.

Good for him. Bad for Lyght.

It's ok for me to not think every player is worthy of an offer right? We want speed in this class, this isn't your guy. We want top notch CB's and are chasing some good ones, this isn't your guy. Greg is a terrific kid and I'd be happy to cheer for him at ND. He'd make us proud to be ND fans off the field I just personally don't think he's good enough on it to be offered by ND at this point. We need CB's so it is what it is but I don't think you offer and lock up plan B when so many plan A's are still floating around.

He's not Julian, not by a long shot. Greg is probably the 2nd best DB on his HS team, some say 3rd although I don't quite agree. He played well at times at DB, Julian was a transcendent player. Julian knew an ND offer was coming and basically shut it down, he was also committed to ND by this point. If Julian chased offers and wasn't the worst kept insta commit secret out there he would have had OSU, UM, UGA amongst others. No I'm not kidding. I'm much closer to these situations than you think.

At the end of the day if we offer we'll get Greg Newsome, it'll only help with Houston, that's positive. I don't think he's a guy you take now and would be disappointed from the standpoint of what we could be leaving on the table but I'll defer to the staffs plan because like I said we'd be getting a great person.

The hottest of takes. Naz and Koon should've hung out more.

Funny how out of the corners that ND took, only 1 actually stayed at corner (Bracy).

Was reading through this cuz Greg Newsome came up elsewhere. Ran across this post and thought it warranted a quote/response because ND got that kid.
