Cyrus Gray, a Rivals 250 to watch for 2008 RB prospect, is now listed as an Official Offer on Irish Envy, B&G, and Rivals. Cyrus becomes the 2nd Texas running back along with Sam McGuffie, and 5th Texas athlete overall, to pick up an offer from Notre Dame. Similar to McGuffie, Cyrus Gray has also not received an offer from Texas. Cyrus has also not attracted the same attention on a national recruiting scale as McGuffie, as all of his offers prior to Notre Dame were from schools in the Southwest. Gray had originally planned to make an early decision on his school of choice, but since picking up the ND offer, he has decided to wait.

Oklahoma seemed to be leading for him, from what i've been reading, but they just picked up their 2nd elite RB in this class. Scout says he has offeres from LSU, Oklahoma, Texas Tech/ A&M and Notre Dame. Do you think now that the Sooners have taken another great RB in this class that he will be looking ND's way some more? i dont know much about him, any thoughts?

Talk about speed and athleticism. Recent unverified 40 of 4.32 and vertical of 36". Second fastest HS 100 in the state of Texas at 10.43.

2006 Stats:
Rushing 220 Attempts, 1,510 yards, 31 TD's
Receiving 38 Receptions, 438 yards, 2 TD's
4 additional TD's on Punt Returns, for a total of 37 TD's for the season.

No offer from Texas, what do they know that the other 18 schools that have offered him don't? Well, actually it's just great fun to recruit for Texas, because they already have verbal's from 3 RB's that they obviously thought higher of. Imagine being a First Team All-State RB from Texas as a Junior, with those stats and that speed, and not even being able to get an offer from Texas. The talent in the Lone Star state is just overwhelming.

Cyrus's top schools right know are Oklahoma, Miami, Texas A&M, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, and Texas although they have not offered and probably won't since they already have several RBs in the fold.

He has said also mentioned that he wouldn't mind playing in a colder climate.

Cyrus will be lining up at QB rather than RB for his high school team this fall.

This summer, Gray plans on visiting Florida and Notre Dame unofficially, "but I also may head out west to California and Arizona.

"I really like the prestige of Notre Dame," he said. "They are always on TV and that's big. Also, coach Charlie Weis is really good and I love that it's a football town. It's like Texas because they love football there."

He also talked about wanting to attend a good dental school. Does ND have one?

The answer is yes. From the ND academic website for the College of Science.

Department Description: The Preprofessional Studies Department at Notre Dame has earned a reputation for preparing undergraduates for admission into the top medical and dental schools. The college’s Preprofessional Program ranks 11th in the nation in the number of students matriculating at medical schools each year. Notre Dame’s reputation for producing high-quality applicants is so widespread that the acceptance rate has annually hovered around 80%, compared with the national rate of near 50%.

ND's preprofessional dental program is probably a little higher ranked than the overall 11th ranked combination of pre-med and pre-dental. I know 2 ND grads from the Class of 2007 who were pre-dental majors who were accepted into the UConn graduate dentistry program, which is recognized as one of the best in the nation.

My wife is a nd grad from that program. She did well in school and could basically go anywhere she wanted to go. The ND degree carries a lot of weight.

"Notre Dame is going to be one of my top schools," Gray said. "For me, it's just the tradition, I've been hearing about it since I was a little kid.

"You'll hear people say, 'Don't go to Texas because they've got a lot of running backs.' But when people hear Notre Dame, it's all about their prestige. Nobody ever talks bad about them. I'm saving Notre Dame for one of my official visits. Hopefully I'll go up there this summer as well."

Cyrus has narrowed it down to a top 10 of SMU, Texas A&M, Cal, Arizona, Penn State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, Louisville, Florida, Miami and Kansas.

BTW, that makes 11 teams in his top 10. It must be a hidden clue that he's going to Penn State.

Cyrus had some very good things to say about Oklahoma St. after his last visit there. He said they will definently be right there as a finalist in the end and that the other schools he's seen are sort of the same and that Oklahoma St. stands out as a school that just fits him.

After camping at Oklahoma State Cyrus said he ran the fastest 40 time there at 4.37, and says that still wasn't his fastest time he has run.

How are his grades? I thought I read somewhere that he had some academic question marks, maybe not, I could be thinking of someone else.

No, you're thinking of the right guy. I haven't really heard one way or the other how possible academic questions are progressing.

A new (free) Scout article (link) has him saying that we've been recruiting him the hardest. He has good things to say about the coaches and the program:

They have great prestige and I like the coaches a lot. Coach Charlie Weis has done big things in the NFL and I have a lot of respect for him as a human and a coach. He talks about character first and says that's what makes someone a Notre Dame football player. I like the team they have. They all seem like great guys.

He hasn't started to narrow down his list yet, and says he won't until the start of the season, but he mentions us, Cal, UF, SMU, A&M, Oklahoma State and Arizona among his favorites, and says he'll probably visit us, Cal, UF and Arizona. He also has good things to say about those other programs as well.

All in all I'd say this looks promising.

Three's a charm for DeSoto football

Florida move-in gives team more star power in area's top 100
02:29 AM CDT on Sunday, August 26, 2007

By TODD WILLS / The Dallas Morning News
twills@dallasnews.com

Adrian Bushell, one of Texas' top players, said he feels right at home with the DeSoto football team since transferring from Florida.

He has a new teammate, quarterback Cyrus Gray, a projected college running back who is ranked No. 6 on SportsDay's Area Top 100.

There's defensive end Tony Jerod, the area's No. 12 ranked player who has orally committed to Texas A&M.

And Bushell, who is No. 8 on SportsDay's list after arriving in Texas from Pace High School in Miami, gives DeSoto three players among the top dozen area recruits.

"It just feels nice to have players around you that are just as good as you or even better than you," said Bushell, who will play running back, receiver and cornerback for his new team. "Like me and Cyrus, we really push each other."

Gray (6-0, 188), one of the area's fastest and most electric players, said he feels a kinship with Bushell (5-11, 180).

"He's a good person, and he's really fast," Gray said.

Gray and Bushell also have something else in common – neither has made an oral commitment to a college. Gray said Friday he will take his time and that he might take things down to the wire like rival William Cole at Cedar Hill last year.

Bushell has had offers from Florida, Michigan, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Texas Tech, but also isn't close to a commitment.

Jerod (6-3, 249) made his commitment to the Aggies in February, less than two weeks after national signing day. The decision didn't surprise his teammates.

"Tony was real comfortable with A&M," Gray said.

Jerod said he felt as comfortable in College Station as he does knowing he doesn't have to prepare to play against Gray and Bushell.

"I'm just happy I'm on their team," Jerod said. "I don't have to go against them with their speed and their ability.

"We've got good chemistry. Even though Adrian is new to our team, we have good chemistry."
