Here's a recent quote from Hafis...

I'm ecstatic. I'm really surprised they came out to New Jersey just to see me. I love how their program is run. They bring something new into it with the student-athlete. Notre Dame doesn't just choose people because of how they are on the field, that sticks out most to me."

106 Tackles as a DT!

Yea, I know. This guy looks GOOD. I like seeing us go after top NJ talent like him and Beal ... here's hoping we see some more good news on this front over the next few months (and years!).

Hafis Williams was on Power Hour last night, and had a great 15 minute interview. Hafis comes across as a real character, and a genuinely nice kid. Some of his comments:

On CW offering him the scholarship via telephone:

"I just stopped right there, I couldn't say nothing else. I was just in pause the whole time. I was in complete shock."

On actually seeing the written ND Scholarship offer:

"It (the offer) was sitting on my bed, and I just couldn't open it. I just lept looking at it, then I finally opened it, and I read it, and I just came to tears when I read it."

Hafis will be at the B&G game with one of his coaches. The B&G game is his only planned visit to any school until after the completion of his 2007 Football season. From his comments it appears that Hafis is going to end up choosing between ND & Rutgers. If you went only by his answers to the relative importance of certain factors in determining his school choice (academics, coaching staff, location, playing position, etc) you would have to think that ND was a lock, but it is way too early to be sure of that. Hafis indicated that he is in no hurry to make a committment, and may wait until NSD to decide.

Here is the link to the free Power Hour blog page. Click on the 4/3 Power Hour hyperlink to hear last night's Power Hour. The Hafis Williams interview starts at the 2:40 point, and ends at 17:15. It's worth listening to.

Elizabeth is a very good football team here in New Jersey and i'm bias because i played football here but i would prefer Jersey players over most states, except the small country states Cal., Texas, Fl. exc.

Because it relates to Hafis Williams, I am just moving this info into his thread. This is based on comments made by Hafis after the B&G game concerning a speech that Brady Quinn gave to new & potentially new recruits.

To paraphrase Brady, he basically told the guys, including Hafis Williams, that ND is a unique place because of the tradition and the fact that education is truly taken seriously. If you really want to go to college for higher learning and to learn football from a great system and a great coach then come to Notre Dame, if you don't feel like you can fit into that tradition and can not be yourself here, then don't come to Notre Dame. It was basically a CW recruiting speech, but because it came out of BQ's mouth, it left a very favorable impression on Williams, who was already a fan of the tradition aspect of ND. Hafis even talked about the Grotto and the march of the team across campus to the stadium, and may have left campus with an even more favorable opinion of the University than the football program which he also had nothing but positive things to talk about. He wants to come back for an Official Visit during a fall game.

To add one point, if Hafis does indeed come back for an Official Visit in the Fall, considering how impressed he was with the campus on a non-football weekend, I would be amazed if he did not commit after spending a football weekend at ND. Williams obviously loves ND, his only hesitation is going to be whether he wants to be that far away from home.

Does anyone know if he was offered at DE or DT? He's almost 20 lbs lighter than Cwynar, yet he doesn't quite pass the eyeball test as a DE...

According to Hafis, CW told him he expects him to play at NG in the 3-4 or DT when they align in a 4-3, no mention of playing DE in either scheme. I guess they expect that Hafis will be able to add quite a bit of weight between now and freshman year in college.

Hafis indicated that he is in no hurry to make a committment, and may wait until NSD to decide.

Is this still the case? If so, will there still be a spot available for him, or will the staff end up offering, and accepting a commitment from, someone lower on our list (Kabongo, Goebel) because DT is such a "need" position for us?

The way I read that quote, the planning to take trips is fact, but I'm not so sure he's said, "I may wait until NSD", as if it were his plan. I've never read or heard him say that, although its possible that he just wasn't asked about it.

What I can confidently say is he plans to take his trips, and research each school before he makes his decision. I can also tell you that he was speechless (literally) when he got the offer from ND, and that he went home and was on the verge of tears at being offered by ND. Heard it from his own mouth when he was doing an interview over the phone, so it is obviously a good sign for ND. Google "Irish Eyes Power Hour" if you want to hear it yourself. And FWIW, I think they wait for him, and if some of the longer shots take too long, then you see a guy like Kabongo get an offer.

It was actually on his Power Hour interview that Hafis told Mike Frank that he may wait until NSD to decide. That does not mean that he will, and in fact, if nothing dramatically changes between now and his Official Visit to ND, IMO there is a really good chance that he will commit to ND after his Official Visit.

Here again is the direct link to the free Power Hour blog page. Click on the 4/3 Power Hour hyperlink to hear that Power Hour. The Hafis Williams interview starts at the 2:40 point, and ends at 17:15. Hafis’s comments on deciding start at about the 11:40 mark, and it is clear that at that point he really had no idea when he was going to decide, even though he said he may do it on NSD.

When is that going to be?

No specific plans were mentioned, but if I was a betting man, I'd say for the USC game. ND is going to have a lot of Official Visits that weekend.

BTW, his latest comment after the B&G game was that he would now most likely make a mid-season decision on his recruitement. How about, October 20th, and how about ND. Also, beware of the Cockwad, but I don't think Hafis will fall for his BS. If he leaves Joisey, he should be Irish.

This is absolutely great news! Definitely agree that someone else should be pulling the trigger soon on the D-line. Welcome Hafis to ND!

HUGE pickup....Newman start feelin the pressure.....doo it....doooo it..
Think so? Newman is without question one of the NT targerts and I don't see Hafis having that much of an impact on him because the way I see it he's a DE in the 3-4.
