Mmm. There was a time not that long ago. During its worst day it turned out 350k.

thriving now. They’ll be close to a half million there tomorrow.

I’m a homer of course but those helicopters last year was bad ass
I remember when it was truly a huge event in the US
lasting an entire month
its only big in where it is; nowhere else

dude, do some research

its a huge story in Indianapolis

Nowhere else anymore

stop living in the past
You do the research. Fox News ot just Fox Sports has been broadcasting from the Speedway most of the week.

A number of years back it wasn’t the star it use to be, but since Penske bought the speedway he has brought it back the it’s respectable position. 350K+ don’t show up for nothing.

it is true things have improved, but still a fraction of what attention it got through the 80's and into the 90's.
Now most of that reason is that there are so many other entertainment options out there. It is why Hockey is not what it was; Tennis, others. I went to Indy for the Time Trials and watched the race into the early 2000's and the crowds at Indy have always been there. Now at its nadir, the crowds did dwindle. And Penske has made a significant difference. But it can never regain what it once was.

I can remember when Papers like the Chicago Tribune or NYT would have the Indy results taking up most of the front page.
No more.
As I said, a LOT of that is that there is so much out there anymore none of the sports that once really mattered do.
I can remember when Sports Illustrated had front page news about the Davis Cup.
When the Americas Cup was huge news.

And a huge crowd for one event is not as big a deal as it once was

lots of reasons for that as lets face it; 350,000 in 1969 (My first year) does not mean what it does today.

Amen, the 500 is clearly a very big deal nationally. I saw a stat yesterday that said roughly 1 and every 1000 Americans will be at the race today, which is an absolute wild stat to wrap your brain around

One could argue the 500 has never had more exposure than it does now. You know why you don’t see results from the 500 anymore on news paper front pages and magazine covers? Because print media is dead

the crowds have remained the same but the population of the US is much bigger
so the actual percentage now is almost half of what it was

you don't get it
there are MILLIONS of websites and so on
how many of them care?
overall exposure, maybe.
BUT back then those were the only sources for people getting news
now they have so many more

todays audience is incredibly fractured.

8 billion people

348 million in the us

who knows how many websites and podcasts and of course facebook and X and so on

once again, what percentage of those care about the Indy 500?

Ironically this is the least contentious thing you’ve ever posted.

Ok fair enough, your argument is America and the world don’t care about the 500 anymore do to population and exposure to other media. I think your opinion is based on nothing factual other than you attended the race in the golden era.

the percentage that care is much lower. its obvious to anyone that takes an honest look
even the NFL and NBA is not as dominant when looking at percentages as they once were.
I did attend the Time Trials and WATCHED the race from 1969 to 1990. I watched it after that but never went. I stopped carring I think around the early 2000's.

Its no surprise; social media and so on; the internet; all of it
only a small percentage of them care about any one thing

Indy will never see that time again

It just is what it is

I had so lost interest I did not realize until fairly recently what Penske was doing

The Hulman family really let things go to seed
and Indy car racing as well

The percentage of tits I saw at Carb Day this year was way down. But the quality was much better. 🤷‍♂️

need more cheese for your whine?

I am indifferent to it now

once upon a time I was hugely involved

A great fan of Mario Andretti and Andy Granatelli and others

and I bet you do not know who Granatelli was.

Congrats you’re indifferent to it, now fuck off and let people enjoy the sport.
