Doesn't this guy know that this is a dangerous, racist conspiracy theory that's already been thoroughly debunked by the Washington Post and Politifact??

All week I've been seeing lots of propaganda sites and congress members pushing this idea that Colbert is only going off the air because Trump worked some angle behind the scenes to have Paramount can him. If Colbert was killing it like he used to in the early days, there's no way CBS would kill a golden goose.

Just a few:

The losing economics of late night TV is known so it's not surprising; the show could have made cuts; NBC has made some cuts like laying off Seth Meyers' entire house band. I guess they made the decision when under pressure from Trump at the end of Colbert's current contract, which just ended, and could justify it with declining economics.

So, if that's the case, it will be interesting to see if ABC and NBC do the same at the end of Fallon and Kimmel's current contracts which occur over the next 14-30 months.
  • Jimmy Fallon signed a major contract extension with NBC through 2028.
  • Jimmy Kimmel signed a contract extension with ABC through May 2027
Another fact that points to Trump political pressure cancelling the show is that even in the midst of declining industry economics that was well under way, in 2023, CBS actually encouraged Colbert to sign a five-year extension through 2031. Colbert turned that down and instead opted for a shorter three-year extension that expired in May 2026.

That's interesting about the extension, that's the first I've heard of it. Maybe Colbert wanted to branch into something else like Conan did, maybe he saw the writing on the wall? I think there's still a market for a late night talk show or two, but not several. CBS probably has the right idea trying to bring something different to the time slot.

I remember sixstar telling me that Donny was a big freedom of speech guy and that he’d be the first to criticize him if he overstepped.

Freedom of speech absolutists remain 0-infinity.

He said he was going to work with his son on some movie scripts.
