The B1G has improved in competition and they are more in line with our age structure with a lot more of a rational travel schedule.
Don’t agree with you on this point. BC and BU usually have some of the youngest hockey teams due to the high quality of player they bring in. Their rosters are littered with US NTDP and high end Canadian/European players who are either already NHL drafted or are slated to be 1st round picks.

The average age of a Freshman hockey player is 20 years old. I believe that if you look at the B10 , you will find that a large percentage of the league expire their Junior hockey eligibility (USHL/NAHL/BCHL) prior to enrolling in the freshman year.

College hockey is unique in this way. Players will sometime choose to play 3-4 years of Junior prior to college just to extend their time chasing the dream.

That league then fell apart when Penn State went to D1 hockey and the Big 10 therefore sponsored hockey (meaning that six Big 10 schools had hockey, which is enough for the conference champion to get an auto-bid to the NCAA tournament). So the Big 10 teams in ND's league left, the league fell apart, and ND was left to find a new conference.

Hockey East is a great conference -I would rather stay, personally- but the geographic problem is too great, even in the new world of big conferences. All of the schools save ND are in New England. It doesn't really make a ton of sense, it means you either play a team at home or on the road, while other teams play home-and-homes, etc.

Hockey is unique because (1) only 60 schools have D1 hockey; (2) only 15 of those have D1 FBS football, and only 9 of those are in P5 conferences or are ND; and (3) all but 5 D1 hockey schools are limited to the Northeast and the upper Midwest. So the conference situation has always been different and probably always will be. The Big 10 is as of yet the only P5 conference sponsoring hockey and I doubt that will change anytime soon. Obviously, any association with the Big 10 is to be avoided, but this is increasingly looking like the best option, given what happened after the CCHA fell apart.

One of the main reasons for this is that apparently Hockey East has a number of older freshmen on their teams. They play in various leagues for a couple of years and then they are freshmen at 20 and 21 years old (not all but a significant number). ND doesn't have that and there aren't many (if any) in the Big Ten. At least this is what I am told and heard similar from Darin Pritchard on WSBT SportsBeat radio show (who is also the voice of Irish hockey on the radio). So maybe more trips to the tourney in the future with less drag due to travel.

One nice thing about Hockey East is that it has a mix of younger teams such as BC and BU and older teams such as UML. I assume we will still play OOC games vs. some older teams.
This is a discussion I had with NDGradstudent back in March 2017 and he agreed with BC and BU being young but pointed out too that some of the others are older.

College Hockey is just different. If you look at the majority of players entering College Hockey as True Freshman, you will see that at least 95% of them have been playing against older players since they were 16 years old. They enter Junior hockey at 16 and are playing against 20 year old players so they have been consistently competing against older players who in most cases (USHL) have already committed to play D1 hockey. Colleges use Junior to allow the players to grow and develop until they are ready to come in and contribute as Freshman. Checkout https://www.collegehockeynews.com, it’s a great (And Free) resource for college hockey news. Also has the committed list for ND Hockey. Where the players a actually playing is out dated however the names are correct. I’ve listed them below.

Irish move into second place with win (34 pts). Michigan beats Ohio State and is tied with Minn for third (33 pts). Penn State beats Wisconsin and is in fifth with 32 pts. The second games for these teams is tomorrow. That will be Minnesota's last conference game. ND plays Penn State next weekend. Michigan finishes with Wisconsin.

FINAL ND 5 PSU 4 OT

ND overcame a 3 goal deficit to beat PSU 5-4 on an OT power play goal. Tied at 4 late in the 3rd Q, PSU's 6'-8' player demolished an Irish puck carrier resulting in a penalty call. After a review on the monitor the refs assigned a 5 minute major for a hit to the head. He went to the box for the rest of the period and was scheduled to be there for all of OT. His OT stay was short.

ND got 3 points for the win and another win tomorrow night over PSU could put ND into the brackets.
