Agree to disagree on that one...

We played two "better teams" against Wichita and MSU, but the rest of the games were as easy or easier (IU was down last year too).

Elijah Burns having the best game of his career. Doing it on both ends of the court.

With this years team, I think it's a MUCH better schedule than last years would have been.

I don't think Purdue, Oklahoma, UCLA, or any of those teams will be really good teams. But being at Neutrals (or UCLA) gives us an opportunity for a Tier 1 win against a team that we can compete with.

Haven't watched an entire game yet but I like what I see so far from the freshman.

Carmody looks like he will be really special, same with Nate L.

Pfleuger is terrible.

Durham moves very well for being as big as he is. He actually looks like an athletic big which isn't something that ND gets very often. Not sure why he isn't getting more playing time - I guess Burns has looked decent so far.

I don't think ND will be on the winning side of too many upsets this year but they will be much better than they were last year. It will be a fun team to watch. Definitely a growth year.

Brey apparently talking about needing to cut the rotation back - too many people playing. WTF - I finally think we are going to keep kids fresh and Brey wants to get back to his usual 5.5 person rotation?

Previous comments by Brey regarding a short bench.

https://www.syracuse.com/orangebaske...all_notes.html

Quote:
"I think we make way too much of it," Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said. "I've always said depth is very overrated except in practice. I think it's very important to your practice, but as far as game night it can be very overrated and if you really, really look, a lot of people are playing a shorter bench and it sometimes it gets even shorter when you get into March.

"My thinking always was we have based this program on offensive efficiency and really being good with the ball," Brey continued. "I think we still lead the nation in least amount of turnovers. I think we're 1 in offensive efficiency. You play too many guys, then you have too many guys handling the ball and I think you can get a little loose offensively. You shorten the bench, guys know their role. They know they're going to play certain minutes, they get confident and they get comfortable in an offensive system where you can be efficient. I don't know what the thinking is with other people but that's my thinking. That's why we've done that here."

Quote:
"The older guys know how to play 40 minutes,'' Brey said of his veterans. "They can fight through the fatigue mentally way better than a younger player. If it's younger guys, you can have an issue in game and length of season. Connaughton and Grant? They're men.''

Brey said he prefers to play with a shorter bench, giving more minutes to his top-line guys.

"I think it can help you,'' Brey said of a short rotation. "I think it helps your offensive efficiency. Guys know they're going to play. They'll move the ball. They're patient. When you play a lot of different guys, you get a lot of different guys playing together and they're more apt to turn the ball over. Also, nobody's looking over at the bench expecting to get the hook.''

Brey said he prepares his players to play more minutes from the time practice starts in the fall.

"In our practices, we get to 5-on-5 quick,'' Brey said. "We're 5-on-5 in that October to November stretch. They're getting their playing legs because we're playing in practice early in the season.

"You also have to start shortening your practices earlier than you'd think,'' the Notre Dame coach added. "You have to understand the value of rest days in November and December.''

By this time of year, Notre Dame's practices are practically walk-throughs compared to other schools.

"I haven't been on the floor more than an hour and 15 minutes since January 1,'' Brey said.

On Thursday, the day after Notre Dame's win over Duke, Brey said his team would not have a regular practice.

"These are what we call recovery days,'' Brey said. "We'll watch a little film of us, a little film of Pittsburgh, we'll let them stretch, they'll get a lift in, but no practice.''

Notre Dame's players also get massages regularly and have a chiropractor available as well.

On Friday, Notre Dame will travel to Pittsburgh where the Fighting Irish will play the Panthers on Saturday. And the team's practice will be even shorter.

"We'll be on the floor for maybe 45 minutes,'' Brey said.

Brey takes it easy on his players in practice because he knows they're going to get big minutes almost every game.

"Sometimes the game's so fragile, you're afraid you may lose the handle,'' Brey said of putting someone like Grant or Connaughton on the bench for very long. "Especially in the second half. In first half, you may try to steal them one. In the second half, they can't come out of the game.''

With a veteran team, Brey often won't bother taking the timeout when the opposing team is on a run. He trusts his experienced players to handle the situation. The return is Brey will have a timeout available when one of his players needs a break.

He recalled one game several years ago when Luke Harangody needed a breather. Harangody ran past Brey and said, "Coach, I need a blow.''

Brey turned to the referee and said, "Timeout.''

"I wasn't even thinking about putting a sub in,'' Brey said. "Luke was playing the last seven minutes of that game.''

On Sunday, Notre Dame rallied from a double-digit deficit to tie its game against North Carolina State. Brey, even though his team was on a run and seemed to have the momentum, called for a timeout.

The referee asked Brey if he wanted a 30-second timeout.

"No, I want a full,'' Brey replied. "We were on a run, but we had exerted so much energy to tie it. I told everybody to get their water and sit down.''

In Wednesday's win over Duke, Connaughton took a nasty tumble when he attempted to block Duke center Marshall Plumlee's shot. Plumlee pump-faked and ducked. Connaughton flipped over Plumlee and landed on his back.

Connaughton eventually walked off the court without assistance. He was escorted up a tunnel when the team's doctor could examine him.

"So they take him up the tunnel to check for a concussion, meanwhile we've gone down 10 and we're in a huddle,'' Brey said. "I say 'Where's Pat?' The doctor says 'Two more minutes.'

"I say 'Well, I may just call another timeout','' Brey says laughing.

Brey said in terms of fatigue, he's more concerned with the length of the season than the minutes a player is getting during one particular game.

"You've got to be plugged in to keep them fresh,'' Brey said Thursday. "Today's practice is No. 60. How do we keep it fresh? I'll ask Jerian tomorrow, how do your legs feel?''

One reason that I love Brey is that he’s a no BS guy. He tells you the truth every single time, no hold outs. I think he makes a valid point when talking about a short bench. Do I like it? No. But he’s been doing this longer than us and has been pretty dang successful in doing so.
