Agreed, but the kid just doesn't want to play there. Has his heart set on WR. If any part of him wanted to be a safety I believe he would be committed to ND.

That's also how it gets around that coaches lie and break promises, which is never a good thing. It's also how transfers happen.

Have a ton of respect for Kelly for not straight up lying to these kids unlike other coaches.

You don't have to lie to the kid. He wants in at WR great. He's either going to be a quality receiver (win) or he's going to be stuck behind some guys and itching to get on the field (win). You move him to S and he gets to play

No lies, no deceit, no problem

I respect him for not lying, but it's also not a great strategy for a recruiter at the highest level of college football.

You bring the kid in, you give him an honest shot to play the position that he wants, and then you just make sure that it's very clear to him that his two options are: 1) Never play at WR, or 2) Move to safety and play. With the WR depth ND has, I'm pretty sure Gary either actually BECOMES a stud WR and plays (which is great), or he realizes he doesn't have what it takes and switches to safety.

See, Florida and Justin Trattou. While committed to ND, Urban Meyer said that ND was going to move him from DE to DT, a position Justin refused to play. So Urb says "Come to Florida and I promise you'll get your shot at DE."

So Justin goes to Florida and gets his shot at DE. Like everyone on Earth who already knew he'd never see the field at DE, Justin finally realized he couldn't cut it and moved to DT where he ended up having a good career.

In that case, Charlie was took honest with him. Urb played along and gave the kid his shot, knowing darn well that he'd eventually get sick of riding the pine and make the switch.

Isn't there basically a version of this story with Anthony Barr too? That was before I really paid attention to any of this crap.

I agree. If a kid is good enough (after all, you still have to manage recruits per position in each cycle), then make them a deal. You come in and compete at your desired position. If you aren't in the two deep after the first season, then it's my turn to do my job as a coach and put you in the best position to succeed. Deal?

Worst case scenario, you have a to redshirt a kid that you would have liked to play.
