The Next Next Next Big Thing
Quote:
As recruiting continues to speed up, one 2015 California prospect is already reporting an offer from Notre Dame while the Irish are checking in on other players who have only completed one season of high school football.

One of those young prospects comes from a school familiar to Notre Dame fans.

During his visit to Cretin-Derham Hall in St. Paul, Minn., earlier this month to get a look at 2013 Notre Dame wide receiver commit James Onwualu, Irish assistant Chuck Martin also checked in on 2015 defensive end/linebacker Jashon Cornell.

The Irish aren’t the only ones already eyeing Cornell as Ohio State, Michigan USC and Stanford have all stopped in as well.

The 6-foot-4, 225-pound freshman has been clocked at 4.6 in the 40-yard dash and it’s clear the Irish believe he has plenty of potential to grow.

“They want me to get stronger and get my speed up and they’ll get back to me,” said Cornell, who spoke with his coach following Martin’s visit.

Cornell will get a chance to show Martin and the rest of the Notre Dame staff what he can do on the field in person when he heads to the Irish’s camp next month.

“I’m going down on June 25th,” said Cornell. “It’s on me to go out there and show them what I can do and handle my business.”

Corenll is also planning to camp at Ohio State, Michigan, USC and Stanford this summer. He understands that there will be some pressure when he gets his shot to perform live, but added “It gets me going.”

Cornell likes playing both defensive end or linebacker as long he gets the chance to track down the quarterback. “Coming off that corner, grabbing him and throwing him down,” said Cornell.

Onwualu is especially excited about Cornell’s potential and the possibility of him playing college ball in South Bend.

“Jashon is the next big thing,” Onwualu said. “It is rare you find a specimen like him. I’m extremely excited to see him go through the process and of course am hoping it comes to an end with the Irish.”

Onwualu has been a great benefit to Cornell at such an early stage in the process.

“He’s helping me a lot; helping me get through the stuff I need to get through,” said Cornell. “He’s told me to keep my grades up.”

And of course he’s also been telling Cornell about the benefits of Notre Dame.

“I know Notre Dame is a good school with good academics too,” Cornell said.

It’s still very early in the process for Cornell and the only factors he knows he’ll be looking at are academics and the opportunity to get on the field.

So James is saying Cornell is probably going to Irish? Isn't a bit early... he is just a freshmen. Not that I'd be mad or doubt it (given the sucess we have had at that HS and visaversa)
