NFL Free Agency, 2020

This is going to be an interesting year in NE and NO. Both Brady and Brees signed contracts that gave their teams more cap space by deferring compensation. Both negotiated contracts with less up front salaries but guaranteed signing bonuses spread out over three years. In the Pats' and Brady's case, he got a salary bump from $15 million in 2018 to $23 million in 2019. That places him at fourteenth in ave/yr among QBs in 2019. (Russell Wilson earned $35 million in salary and bonuses in 2019). He's guaranteed $13 million in bonuses spread out over the next two years. They agreed that the three year contract could be voided before the start of free agency in March. Brady in the current contract is due for a salary of $30 mill in 2020 and $32 million in 2021.

The Pats freed up $15 mill with Brady's renegotiated contract and just kicked the can down the road. Now they have to deal with that deferral. They'll void the remaining two years of his contract and enter negotiations prior to free agency. New Orleans is in a similar situation with Brees with a voidable contract prior to free agency. Both teams will have to negotiate new contracts for their star QBs who are over forty or suffer hits on their cap space with dead money from deferred bonuses.

Brady has said he wants to stay in NE next year, but is reportedly unhappy with his salary situation. It's also been reported that he is moving out of his home in Boston and has put his house up for sale.

If both teams cannot reach agreements with their star QBs, just imagine both Brady and Brees hitting free agency.

We may see a lot of QBs in new teams next year.

Free Agent QBs in 2020.

As noted in the above post, both Brady and Brees have voidable contracts. Brady is moving out of Boston and will be looking at a multiyear contract at $30 mill per year. Phillip River is selling his home in San Diego (he never bought one in LA) and is moving to Florida. He feels like he can play a few more years. Both want to play next season. Drew Brees says he will get a new contract or retire. Eli has retired already passing the starting role to Daniel Jones.

Ryan Tannehlll will get a new contract in Tennessee. Dak Prescott will cash in at Dallas. A massive contract for Pat Mahomes is coming. Deshaun Watson will probably also sign a big contract.

After those, Teddy Bridgewater, Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota, Chase Daniel, Case Keenum, Blake Bortles, etc are other FAs.

Will Cam Newton and Joe Flacco be released or traded? Kirk Cousins, Newton, Jacoby Brissett, Mitch Trubisky, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Andy Dalton are FAs in 2021.

There may be only three QBs taken in the first round - Burrow, Tua and Herbert. All may go in the six picks. Jake Fromm, Jordon Love, Jacob Eason?

Gotta think one of either Tua or Herbert is going to be a Charger.

Probably both, right. Sign Tom to a 1-2 year contract and then draft the rookie since you wouldn’t be planning to have the 6th pick again next season.

Brady will be looking for a contract of $30+ million a year for two years. Brady Market Value

Rivers made $20 million last year. Chargers' cap space is pretty good at $51 million (12th) without Rivers and also Melvin Gordon. The cap will probably increase by $8 mill. They could sign Derrick Henry, Lamar Miller or Carlos Hyde which would make the offense attractive to a FA QB. Hunter Henry is a FA and needs to be resigned.

What if Oakland uses their two first round picks to jump the Chargers and maybe Miami to draft the second QB (Tua or Herbert)? Carr is taking up $20 million of their cap space and has a Dead Cap hit of $5 mill in 2020 and $2.5 mill in 2021.
