Posting Guidelines (EVERYONE PLEASE READ)

Dear IrishEnvy Community,

IrishEnvy is a discussion forum dedicated on fostering intelligent discourse on all things Notre Dame. We are committed to maintaining a robust recruiting forum full of current information on Notre Dame targets and commits. We are also committed to respecting efforts and work product of professionals on Notre Dame premium sites that produce much of the information many here take for granted. Accordingly, we wanted to reiterate and clarify our posting guidelines with respect to information found on premium sites to ensure we meet both of these goals.

1. Directly copying any information found behind a paywall is explicitly forbidden. Offending posts will be deleted at moderator's discretion, and repeat offenders will be banned.

2. Any information gleaned from a premium site and posted here should be directly attributed to the 1) the site 2) the author and 3) accompanied with a link to the source. But what kind of information sharing is acceptable?

2A. Paraphrasing information can be acceptable.
Acceptable Example: "Pete Sampson at Scout said that he thinks Gunner Kiel might switch from LSU. (LINK)"
Unaccpetable Example: "Gunner Kiel failed chest size requirements for Les Miles and might flip to Notre Dame." (with no source or link)

2B. Relaying direct quotes from a third party can be acceptable.
Acceptable Example: "In an interview with ESPN Insider, Foster Sarrel said 'Stanford is lame and has no fans, so of course I'm going to Notre Dame.' (LINK)"
Unacceptable Example: Directly copying multiple paragraphs of quotes from an interview and not citing/linking where it came from.

2C. Summarizing is generally not acceptable, for the same reason that taking someone's homework assignment and changing around a few words is still plagiarism. If someone posts a bunch of premium information (think ISD Intel or 247 Tunnel Vision) it is not acceptable to summarize all of that content here. Summarizing the totality of someone's work might not be illegal, but we do consider it unethical and ergo it is not permitted on this site.
Acceptable Example: posting in an individual recruit's thread "ISD reported in their Intel that (insert recruit) is about to flip from Pedo State because James Franklin is a no-talent ass clown and pathological liar. (LINK)"
Unacceptable Example: the thread we used to have where we summarized the weekly Intel.

3. Rule of thumb: Discussion of recruits -- including any information you have heard or read -- is encouraged. Copying work product of a professional without permission is discouraged. Think about what you're posting and how you're posting it.

We appreciate that there is some gray area when it comes to posting information. It's also important to understand that what might be legally acceptable might not be the ethically correct way to approach the appropriation of someone else's material. Please make your best effort to adhere to these guidelines when posting.

Respectfully,

The Moderators

IrishLax 08-11-2016 04:37 PM

I'm going to keep this thread open until Monday in case anyone has any questions or points they want to discuss. There aren't significant changes to the standard operating procedure for this site, we just wanted to put this in writing so expectations are clear to everyone.

Happy posting.

Fbolt 08-11-2016 05:49 PM

I can't get the Foster Sarrel link to work.

NDdomer2 08-11-2016 08:08 PM

What about posting third party information as far as....I heard Joe player failed a class and is ineligible....or Mike backer may have suffered a significant injury....with no sources or accompanying information?

Irish YJ 08-11-2016 08:14 PM

My mom says Gunner never had a chest, and it's Longo's fault. Fire Longo. The moms can't link.

As long as you're willing to vouch for the credibility of your source, that's fine to share.

I want to remind everyone that you need to provide a source for pretty much anything you get from another website related to recruiting. If you get something off Twitter, please embed the tweet. If you read an article on espn, include the link. The reason we want you to do this is not because it is inappropriate to post free content, but because we don't know whether you got the content for free or from a premium site without a source.

If you get the info from a premium site you MUST follow the rules summarized in the OP.

IrishLax 12-13-2016 06:39 PM

GK beat me to the bump... you are not allowed to grab any content (including paraphrasing) from another site without attributing it to the source and providing a link to the content.

From now on, we're going with zero tolerance until people start strictly adhering to the guidelines. From this point forward, a first offense will result in a one week ban. A second offense will result in a two week ban, and so forth. We clearly laid out the guidelines and expectations for posting, and they need to be followed.

Welp, I'll be banned for life

irishff1014 12-13-2016 09:22 PM

So if I am at work and I can't post a link because the county blocks a lot of stuff I can't post it? Because Twitter is blocked and I am not smart enough to be able to enable from my phone.

I understand the rule against direct quotes without attribution, but a "there's a rumor that recruit xyz might pull the trigger this weekend" doesn't violate any copyright laws. Facts of themselves are not copyrighted content. Attribution in that case is more courtesy than CYA protocol. Why the harsh stance for something that doesn't really open the site to liability?

Yeah, you're totally right. The 24-hour news cycle has been a complete myth for the past 30+ years... Right up there with gravity and the moon landing.

Gravity turns off at night. That's why you get taller when you sleep. The moon landing occurred in the middle of the afternoon. Those are terrible examples.

I'm not LAX (or GK), but the idea is that we want to do everything we can to make sure 247, or any site, really, is getting the proper credit/attribution/clicks they deserve when their content is brought to this site.

It's not about a harsh stance in the face of something legal/illegal; it's about making sure we're fostering a friendly relationship in the greater ND news community as a whole.

Classic "disagreeing with GK just because..."

Recruiting news does not break overnight. And certainly not major news. Name me one big recruiting story the last 5 years that broke between 1am and 4am. I'll wait.

The point is that we aren't going to permit someone to post stuff without links just because he happens to work the graveyard shift and must use his phone.

I am not asking for special treatment or any special rights.

I am just trying to find i posting info a certain way is ok.

EXAMPLE ONLY Per Loy @ 247 John Cooper (my name) is being interviewed for recruiting coordinator for Hillbilly State University. Is this ok?

1) I apologize if I came across as being negative towards you. I was just saying we can't give anyone leeway just because they have special circumstances.

2) No, that example is not ok. You must provide the link.

gkIrish 12-14-2016 09:49 AM

For tweets:

When you get information from a tweet, please embed the entire tweet in your post. If that is not possible, you can still post the information, but if the account you got the info from is a reporter or recruiting site you should still give their name. This rule only applies when the tweet does not contain a link to the story.

EXAMPLE:

Per Loy at 247, Bob Stoops is on campus right now.

If there is a link in the tweet, the tweet MUST be embedded, or at a minimum, the link must be included in your summary.
